When Dominick heard Max call him Mr. Ex the terrifying look on Dominick's face could only be described as murderous. Even Paisley was quite surprised. In her impression, Max was a calm and reserved person, and she hadn't expected him to have another side.
Suddenly, Paisley felt pain in her wrist as Dominick grabbed it, forcing her to face him again. "Paisley, what did you mean by that? Are you planning to have my daughter call this man 'dad'?"
Paisley couldn't understand how Dominick had come to such a conclusion. It was ridiculous.
"What are you talking about? Max and I are just neighbors." She explained, not because she worried Dominick might misunderstand her, but because she didn't want him causing unnecessary trouble for Max.
"Neighbors? Do you think I would believe that? A neighbor wouldn't take Rena out to fly kites. A neighbor wouldn't run around for you and even bring you food!"
"If you don't believe it, there's nothing I can do." Paisley was starting to get irritated.
Dominick stepped closer to Paisley. "In any case, I won't allow you to have my daughter call another man 'dad'!"
"Dominick, stop making unreasonable scenes. I don't have the energy to deal with your tantrums right now!" Serena was still inside, unconscious, and the anesthetic would wear off soon, and she would wake up in pain.
"Tantrums?" Dominick was frustrated, especially when he saw Max standing beside Paisley. It made him want to explode. But Paisley didn't understand him at all and thought he was throwing a fit.
He was so angry, but when he saw the clear impatience on Paisley's face, he couldn't say a word. It was like seeing himself from years ago, when he had treated Paisley the same way.
Paisley pushed Dominick away, losing her last bit of patience. "Fine, you know everything you need to know. It's late. Leave now. And, Rena's current mental and physical state is bad, and she resents you. For her sake, don't tell her the truth just yet."
Thinking of the way Serena avoided his gaze whenever they met, wishing to stay as far away as possible, and always calling him mean and scary, Dominick found it hard to even breath. How many stupid things had he done in the past?
Paisley didn't say anything more to Dominick and turned to go back to the ward. After a while, she heard footsteps outside the ward, likely Dominick leaving.
Paisley finally breathed a sigh of relief, and her emotions lightened. Max handed the packed food to Maria, then sat opposite Paisley.
"Thanks for today; sorry to take up your time," Paisley expressed her gratitude to Max.
Max smiled, "It's no problem. My people did most of the work. Besides, you've helped me twice, so I owe you more."
Paisley didn't continue with the back-and-forth of thanks and just gave a faint smile.
"By the way, I should apologize to you too. My behavior has caused you some trouble," Max continued.
Remembering how Max had called Dominick Mr. Ex, Paisley couldn't help but laugh, "Yeah, why did you do that?"
Max sighed, his voice calm, "It's nothing really. It's just that your ex-husband's family was bothering you, not letting you go see Rena. I saw Rena sitting in the corner being held by Maria, no one paying attention to her, and I felt sorry for her."
Paisley recalled that scene, and the tip of her nose tingled with tears. Thanks to Maria, she now understood the whole story. Including what Lauren had said to Maria and Serena before she arrived.
She tightened her grip on Serena's hand. Thinking of how Serena had asked Maria what an illegitimate child was, she felt like slapping Lauren again.
"Alright, Paisy, Max, let's eat something first," Maria said as she helped arrange the food.
Max stood up. "I'll pass on the food. I'm heading back now." Since it was on the way, Maria followed Max out of the hospital.
Outside the hospital, Dominick sat in the car, unwilling to leave. Only after he saw Max walking out and driving away did he slowly withdraw his gaze and tell Julian, "Leave two people here, keep it low-key, don't let Paisley find out."
"Got it," Julian answered, then turned to Dominick. "Dom, from what Paisy said, Max is just a neighbor. I don't think she would lie to you about that. It's probably true."
Dominick didn't reply. He just stared coldly ahead, at the direction Max's car had gone. He was a man, and he understood men. The way Max looked at Paisley, there was nothing innocent about it.
In the car, Leo glanced at Dominick's car through the rearview mirror, then shrugged and got down to business. "Max, I just got word. We found the person who knows where your sister is.
"According to them, before the lady passed away, she had a very close friend. They got married and got pregnant around the same time. Maybe that friend knows where your sister is."
After Reginald arranged for someone to get Serena's sample, he used his connections to rush the test overnight. By the next morning, the test results were already on his desk.
Both Reginald and Lauren hadn't slept that night, filled with both anticipation and anxiety. Right now, they were looking at the report.
Lauren stood up from the couch. "She's our child!"
Reginald double-checked the test results on the report, a wide smile spreading across his face. He was a grandfather now.
He felt it was necessary to announce this to the entire Vanderbilt family, to let everyone know. And he'd even organize a ceremony for his granddaughter to formally recognize her heritage.
Reginald handed the test report to Paul. "Dad, look, you have a great-granddaughter. Paisley's daughter is your great-granddaughter!"
Paul had already gone to bed last night since he returned late. Plus, to avoid worrying Paul, no one from the Vanderbilt family told him about Grayson's incident yesterday. So Paul had only just found out what had happened.
As he looked at the report, a rare smile appeared on his face. For once, something good had happened in this troublesome family.
"Useless. I advise you not to get too excited," Kayla said, throwing a cold splash of water on the mood. "Mom, don't forget how you treated them yesterday. You called Serena a bastard right in front of Paisley. There's no way they'll accept us now."
"Lauren? What did you do?" Paul looked angrily at Lauren. He had no idea about this.
"I—" At this point, Lauren didn't know what to say anymore. Thinking about how she had called Serena a bastard yesterday, seeing Serena's hurt expression, she just wanted to slap herself.
But at the time, how could she have known that Serena was her real granddaughter? "It's Paisley's fault. Why didn't she say anything?" Lauren muttered, but deep down, she was already filled with regret.
Paul slammed the table, pointing at Lauren and Reginald. "I don't care what you two have to do, whether you beg or plead. I want to see my great-granddaughter!"
