Diana reached the door, standing with an air of authority by the ornate door, making her seem especially majestic. Christina froze for a moment upon seeing Diana. She hadn't seen this lady the last time she came.
Just as she was about to wonder who she was, the elegant lady spoke up. "What's going on? Why all the shouting?"
The security guard quickly explained, "Mrs. Beaumont, this lady claims to be a member of the club, but her name isn't on the list."
Diana furrowed her brows, clearly displeased. Christina felt panicked. She had just heard the guard address the woman as Mrs. Beaumont. That must be the lady from the Beaumont family, right? Was she doomed now? Would she never get in?
"Not on the list? Just add them, problem solved," she said.
The security guard froze for a moment, confirming he hadn't misheard and quickly nodded. Christina was also stunned. She looked uncertainly at Diana, only to see her walking over with a warm smile. "You are—"
Christina hurriedly responded, "Christina Sullivan." Her answer was not so confident. She knew all too well that with the Sullivan family's influence and status in Harrowfell, she didn't stand a chance of mingling with the members of this exclusive women's circle.
The last time, she had begged the wife of a business partner, giving gifts and hosting dinners for ages, just to get introduced to the group.
She had thought this club was a lifetime membership deal, just a casual social circle for wealthy women to chat and hang out.
As long as she attended once, she assumed she'd be welcome to join any future gatherings. Her plan was to bring Brittany along again this time. If the women here casually shared some resources with Brittany, it could make her life much easier.
And if Brittany managed to catch the attention of a particular lady and got introduced to her son, she might even end up as a wealthy wife someday. But unexpectedly, after that first time, Christina never received another invitation.
She only found out about this gathering when she saw a post from the lady who had introduced her on social media. It turned out the club had been meeting regularly, but she had been left out.
By the time she refreshed her feed, that post was gone. It was clear she had been blocked from seeing any future updates. Suddenly, resentment, frustration, and all kinds of paranoid thoughts flooded Christina's mind.
Now that the Sullivan family no longer had Dominick's support, their influence had clearly waned. Gregory was struggling to keep himself afloat, with one partner after another pulling out. He obviously had no energy to care about Brittany.
This club was Christina's only remaining avenue to access connections and resources, so she had to get Brittany in today. At this moment, Christina looked nervously at Diana, waiting for her next words.
Diana smiled and took Christina's hand. "Mrs. Sullivan, please, come in."
Christina was both surprised and flattered as she followed Diana inside. Behind her, Brittany suddenly called out, "Mom!"
Only then did Christina remember Brittany. She quickly stopped and excitedly waved her over. "Brittany, come here quickly."
Moments ago, Brittany had wanted nothing more than to distance herself from Christina, but now, hearing her call, she quickly ran over with little hurried steps.
"This is Diana from the Beaumont family," Christina eagerly introduced Brittany to Diana.
Brittany smiled politely and greeted Diana. Diana looked at Brittany with a pleasant expression, nodded, and said, "Come in."
Brittany, who had seen her fair share of the world, was still stunned as she followed Diana inside. It felt like stepping into a magical garden, in stark contrast to the bleak, wintry landscape outside.
And this was just the entrance. As they walked further into the main hall where the event was being held, the sheer opulence took her breath away. Now she completely understood why Christina was so determined to bring her here.
Arriving just moments after Diana, Lauren could only watch helplessly as Diana warmly escorted Christina inside. Seeing the annoyed expression on Lauren's face, Diana felt a wave of satisfaction. She glanced at Christina, noticing she didn't seem to recognize Lauren.
Curious, Diana asked, "Mrs. Sullivan, don't you know her?"
Considering Paisley had been with Dominick for four years, Lauren and Christina should technically count as in-laws. How could they not know each other?
Christina took a closer look at Lauren and confirmed she didn't recognize her. She hadn't seen this woman during her previous visit. She shook her head cautiously and said, "Who is this?"
Diana chuckled softly, glancing at Lauren. "She's Mrs. Vanderbilt."
'Mrs. Vanderbilt? Dominick's mother?' Christina and Brittany's hearts skipped a beat at the same time.
They had no idea how much Dominick's mother knew about what had happened in the past. Would she be furious enough to kick them out?
If that happened, it would have been better to not come at all, rather than face the humiliation of being thrown out in front of everyone.
But what Christina and Brittany didn't know was that Lauren felt even more awkward than they did.
Back then, she had looked down on Paisley and had no interest in learning about her other connections. Besides, Paisley had never mentioned her own family.
At the time, Lauren had assumed Paisley didn't have any relatives in Harrowfell. It wasn't until recently that she overheard from Grayson that Dominick had taken him to meet his grandparents.
Grayson had said it was chaotic, with his grandparents and Paisley getting into fights or something. But Grayson was only seven years old, recounting bits and pieces. His fragmented descriptions left Lauren utterly confused.
She went to ask Dominick, but he refused to talk about it and told her not to get involved. It was only then that she realized Paisley's biological parents were also in Harrowfell. But it wasn't until today that she actually met them.
What surprised her most was the image of the woman in front of her, who claimed to be Paisley's biological mother. Her eyes, though humble and polite on the surface, carried a constant calculating glint.
The young woman who came in with her wasn't much better—her eyes darted around the main hall, restless even when she stood still.
Looking at the two women, whose overall demeanor was worlds apart from Paisley's, Lauren couldn't help but ask, "Are you really Paisley's biological mother?"
Christina's heart skipped a beat at the question. "Of course, I am. Not long ago, my family had dinner with Dominick and Paisley's family. We even had a little argument afterward. Paisley is just stubborn."
She laughed awkwardly, unsure how much Lauren knew about the Sullivan family. She tried her best to make it seem like her conflicts with Paisley were just normal mother-daughter disagreements.
Paisley was stubborn—that much Lauren had to agree with. Since she could mention having dinner with Dominick and Sonny, she was likely Paisley's real mother.
Lauren disliked people like Christina, but since she claimed to be Paisley's biological mother, Lauren had to suppress her distaste for the time being. As long as Dominick and Paisley could reconcile, Lauren could put up with it for now.
Lauren walked over and affectionately took Christina's arm. "It's my fault. All these years, I never came to see you. Now that we've met, we should keep in touch."
