"I—" Brittany's eyes instantly filled with tears, her face showing the expression of wanting to cry but holding it back. "I don't know what I did wrong to offend Ms. Levine. I really apologize."
Daisy sneered, "Stop pretending. There are no men or elders here—who are you trying to fool?"
Daisy's words immediately sparked laughter and agreement from the other young ladies. They were all around the same age, and they could see through Brittany's little tricks. Older people might not notice, but they could tell right away.
As the mocking laughter rang in her ears, Brittany's face turned red. She cursed these young ladies in her mind but could only grit her teeth and bear it, putting on a face as if she were the one being bullied.
Daisy looked at her and couldn't help but sneer and thought, 'She's so good at pretending.'
Brittany's expression froze. She could tell that Daisy's sneer now was the same as the one she had made earlier when she mocked her in front of the ladies.
In other words, Daisy was the one who had laughed at her earlier. Brittany immediately looked up, her eyes red. "Ms. Levine, did I offend you in some way? Why are you targeting me?"
Daisy raised an eyebrow and looked at her like she was watching a joke. "Oh, still pretending? No wonder you're an actress. But—" Daisy smiled faintly, "She's the actress who got laughed out of the cast after being mocked by everyone."
"What? What happened? How did she get kicked out of the cast?" asked another young lady.
Daisy became animated. "You didn't know? It's been all over the news. She got picked up by a big-time investor, who pushed her into the lead role for a new Nion drama.
"But after the announcement, all the other signed actors dropped out. No one wanted to work with her."
"What? That embarrassing?" said Young Lady A.
"Yeah, it's really embarrassing!" said Young Lady B.
The words "embarrassing" seemed to echo in Brittany's ears like a curse. She gritted her teeth, her hands clenched, her eyes gradually turning red.
"But that's not the most embarrassing part," Daisy said disdainfully, scanning Brittany with a cold look. "The most embarrassing part is that because of her, the crew couldn't find anyone willing to play the male lead, so the production kept getting delayed."
"She really is a troublemaker," said Young Lady A.
"Then not long ago, the crew announced they were canceling the cooperation with her and kicked her out. As soon as she left, the crew got things moving and started preparing to shoot. Now, the cast is complete."
Daisy looked at Brittany's pale face and continued, "I have a friend who works in the industry. She told me that everyone on set couldn't stand her. She'd throw her weight around, giving orders like she was the queen. She acted like she was an award-winning actress."
"So, what happened?" Daisy sneered at Brittany. "You didn't become the queen, now you're here playing the dog, huh?"
If Brittany hadn't been so eager to flatter everyone, the young ladies might have given her some respect. They could understand doing what you had to for survival. But with her two-faced personality, she was truly disgusting.
None of these women came from families completely spotless. From childhood, they had seen all kinds of condescending and fake women. Women like Brittany were nothing but a clown making a fool of herself.
If they were in a good mood, they would play along with her. But clearly, they didn't want to play along with Brittany today.
"Shut up!" Brittany's face turned red, and Daisy's words not only humiliated her but also peeled away the facade she had carefully built, showing it to everyone. Since childhood, Brittany had always been protected by Christina. She had never been publicly humiliated like this.
"What did you say?" Daisy didn't hear Brittany clearly and leaned in closer. "Speak louder."
"I said, shut up!" Brittany suddenly stood up and slapped Daisy across the face.
The sound was incredibly loud, echoing throughout the hall. The women chatting not far away all turned their heads to look. When Donna saw her daughter being hit, she immediately stood up and angrily questioned Christina, "How could your daughter hit someone?"
Paisley took the opportunity while Serena was asleep to temporarily leave the hospital and go to the studio to handle some accumulated work.
On her way back, she received a call from Christina. The call came from an unfamiliar number, and Paisley didn't think much of it. After answering, she realized it was Christina.
"Paisy, where are you? Something happened here. Can you come to 190 Garden Road?" Christina immediately explained the purpose of the call, possibly fearing Paisley would hang up the moment she heard her voice.
"If you have a problem, call the police. I'm busy, goodbye." Paisley hung up without a second thought, showing no courtesy. Christina must be calling about Brittany.
Although she was used to it, the thought that her own mother only ever remembered her when her adopted daughter was in trouble still made Paisley feel a bit of sadness.
However, not long after, another unfamiliar call came in. Paisley hesitated, but decided to answer it. This time, the caller wasn't Christina.
"Hello, this is the police." Paisley was surprised. The police were calling her. "Your mother has encountered some trouble at 190 Garden Road, and they need you to come over."
What could have happened that required the police? Paisley looked at the road ahead. Coincidentally, she had to turn a corner to reach Garden Road.
She could ignore Christina, but she had to respect the police. "Okay, I understand. I'll be there in five minutes."
When Paisley arrived at 190 Garden Road, she suddenly realized this was the place where Lauren often attended the ladies' association.
When she was still Dominick's wife, Lauren never brought her here, always bringing Marissa instead. This had even become a point for Marissa to show off to her.
She hadn't expected to arrive at this place in such a way today. What confused her was how Christina even had the qualifications to enter the ladies' association. The membership vetting for the ladies' club was very strict.
As soon as Paisley entered, she saw a smiling lady walking towards her. She looked familiar, but Paisley couldn't recall where she had seen her before.
Diana approached Paisley and introduced herself warmly, "I'm Nathaniel's mom, you can call me Diana."
Nathaniel? A picture of a handsome face with striking red hair and fair skin flashed through Paisley's mind.
Recently, Nathaniel had occasionally sent her messages, mostly polite ones, just checking in. Except for once, when he accidentally sent a picture of his abs, though he quickly recalled it. He apologized, saying it was a mistake.
But Paisley hadn't expected that Nathaniel's mother would also know her. "Hello, Diana."
Diana was thrilled when Paisley remembered her son. "We met at the Crown & Culture auction last time. I even bid on one of your paintings, but it was eventually bought by the Vanderbilt family girl." Diana quickly tried to get closer to Paisley.
'Paisley looked even better up close,' she thought.
