Not long after, Leo hurried back, his face anxious. "It's Edmond. He's brought a lot of people and is shouting outside, demanding to be let in."
Max's expression darkened. "They couldn't wait this long?"
Outside the courtyard, the knocking had turned into hammering, with an attitude of "we won't stop until we get in."
"Max, I'll go out and deal with them now," Leo said, nearly boiling over with rage. "This is too much."
Leo had been patient for so long, but now he couldn't take it anymore.
The others clearly knew that Tyson was gravely ill from poison, which was why they'd shown up at this moment.
Their intentions were obvious, far too obvious. Although they couldn't confirm if it was Edmond who had poisoned Tyson, there was one thing they could confirm—those who had stopped and followed them in Brightmoor were definitely sent by Edmond.
Edmond's goal was clear: drag Tyson to his death.
Now, bringing more people and causing a scene outside, it seemed to Leo that Edmond was certain Tyson wouldn't survive, so he was here to loot in the chaos.
The more Leo thought about it, the angrier he became, and he was about to rush out with people.
Just then, Ocean stepped forward and stopped the impulsive Leo. "What are you risking your life for? They've brought so many people, clearly prepared. Do you want to go out there and die?"
Unlike when Tyson was close to death, Ocean was now calm and rational.
"But—" Leo was unwilling to accept it. He thought, 'Should we really just let Edmond and his men shout outside without doing anything? Besides, even if he didn't take anyone with him, Edmond would find a way to get in sooner or later.'
"Let him in." Paisley mumbled through a mouthful of food, sounding a bit unclear. "I've already—"
"No way." Leo quickly cut her off. "Ms. Sutton, you don't understand. The guy outside is the second son of the Godard family. He's just here to take advantage of the situation.
"If we let him in, it's like we're just waiting to be butchered, right? We're fine, but what about you and Mr. Godard upstairs?"
Even if they called the police, by the time they arrived, it would all be over.
Paisley didn't say anything more. She just put her fork down and started fiddling with her phone.
Leo watched her and thought she might have been scared, so he quickly added, "But don't worry. I'll protect you all, even if it costs me my life."
Paisley lowered her gaze, eyes still on her phone, but in her heart, she couldn't help but admire Leo a little.
'Hmm, he's a nice guy,' thought she.
"Max? What should we do now?" Ocean asked Max while arranging the remaining guards to stay on the third floor, focusing on protecting Tyson.
Then he turned to Paisley and said, "Ms. Sutton, you should go upstairs. No matter what happens downstairs, don't come down."
Max agreed with Ocean's words and looked at Paisley. "Right, go upstairs. I'm really sorry for dragging you into this."
Max knew Edmond all too well. He was a person who wouldn't stop until he got what he wanted.
He believed their support hadn't arrived yet, and Edmond's influence was definitely involved in the delay.
Brightmoor was still quite far from Montera, so there were too many uncontrollable factors during this period.
But before Max could make a decision, Edmond's men used some method to violently break open the old gate.
The next moment, Edmond stormed in with a large group of people. As they entered, the first thing they saw was Max sitting with a woman, eating. "Max, you have no conscience. My brother's body hasn't even cooled yet, and you're still having dinner with a woman?"
Edmond took the lead, accusing Max with a pained and twisted expression. He acted like he had some deep brotherly bond with Tyson and was genuinely upset for him.
Leo stepped forward in a flash, confronting Edmond. He stood his ground, his presence just as powerful as the people behind Edmond. His cold eyes were like a warrior ready to fight for his pack.
Edmond looked at Leo and, somewhat enviously, turned to Max. "Max, sometimes I really envy you, having such a loyal helper by your side."
Max's face darkened as he stood up slowly and calmly called out, "Edmond, my Edmond."
From his expression, there was no hint of panic.
Max was as calm as ever, and if not for the fact that he stepped sideways after standing up, blocking Paisley with his body.
Edmond, of course, noticed Max's instinctive move and became even more certain that the woman behind him was his girlfriend and that Max cared a lot about this girlfriend.
"Don't call me Edmond. I don't have a nephew like you. My brother didn't have a son like you, either," Edmond snapped at Max, his tone filled with pain.
"It's ridiculous that my brother treated you like his own son all these years, and this is how you repay him? While he's dying, you're out shopping with your girlfriend? Huh?"
As he spoke, Edmond snatched a thick stack of freshly printed photos from his assistant and angrily threw them toward Max.
For a moment, the hall was filled with photos of Max and Paisley, scattered all over the floor.
Edmond said, "Today, I'm going to teach you a lesson in place of my brother, to ease his soul."
"Ease his soul?" Max raised an eyebrow slightly, seemingly confused. "Edmond, who told you my father is dead?"
Edmond snorted coldly. "Stop pretending, Max. Nothing you say matters now. Where's my brother? I want to see his body right now."
With that, Edmond started heading upstairs.
Leo and Ocean rushed forward, blocking his way.
"What do you think you're doing? Sir is resting, and you're not allowed to disturb him," Ocean scolded sharply.
Edmond didn't even regard the Leo and Ocean. He thought, 'Their abilities are strong, sure, but what good is that when I have many more men with me?'
At that moment, Max walked over and stood in front of Leo and Ocean.
The height difference made Edmond appear much smaller in front of Max.
Max, who had been calm before, now looked grim, his words like a sharp, icy blade. "Edmond, my father is resting. No one is allowed to disturb him."
Even with the strength of his numbers, Edmond was momentarily shaken by Max's overwhelming presence and stepped back two paces.
But he quickly regained his composure. "Max, no matter how much you delay, it won't change anything. I'm here today because I have reliable information. I'm going to see my brother's body, no matter what."
Thinking back to when he, a true Godard family member, had been pressed down by Max, his adopted son with no blood ties, Edmond gritted his teeth. "And I'll expose how you abandoned my brother to go shopping with your girlfriend, so the whole world can condemn you."
Then he turned to Ocean. "And you, aren't you supposed to be by Tyson's side? Max treats Tyson like this, and you're just standing by? Looks like your loyalty is fake, huh? As soon as you heard my brother was dying, you switched masters, didn't you?"
Edmond was completely convinced that Tyson was already dead. Otherwise, Max wouldn't be stopping him. Even if Tyson wasn't dead, he was as good as gone to Edmond.
So now, no matter what, Edmond was going upstairs to see for himself. He raised his hand and waved it. His gaze was fierce. "Control these people for me. I'm going upstairs to see my brother."
Just then, the assistant next to him grabbed his arm. "Mr. Godard."
Edmond, in the heat of the moment, was extremely displeased when the assistant pulled him. "What is it?"
"The... phone..." The assistant held up the phone in front of Edmond, his voice trembling. "It's a call from Tyson."
