In the room, Paisley frowned as she looked at the man lying on the bed, panting heavily, his face swollen, and his drunken eyes crooked.
She turned around and stared at Linna. "You said you had control?"
She thought, 'With him beaten like that, how could he talk?'
Linna awkwardly scratched her hair. "I-I was just mad, okay? This guy, he's tried to Paisley more than once."
Indeed, that morning, this man had been trying to find ways to get close to Paisley.
Paisley had just seen the photos Linna had taken from the shadows. Almost every single one had this man staring at her with a fierce, cold gaze. The hatred in his eyes was so intense, it felt like they had a blood feud.
But no matter how Paisley thought about it, she had no memory of this man. She was certain that, before this, she had never interacted with him.
Even if he was hired by Christina, that was just a business transaction. She couldn't understand why he would show such intense hatred toward her.
Paisley was anxious to know the answer. Yet Linna harmed his face, twisted his mouth, and knocked out his teeth. Now, he couldn't even say a complete sentence.
His eyes, once filled with hatred, had now narrowed into slits due to his swollen face. This way, Paisley couldn't ask any questions, nor could she read any change in his expression.
Realizing she had gone too far and delayed her teacher, Linna stood quietly by Paisley's side, like a child who had done something wrong.
Paisley stepped forward, examined his injuries with her eyes, then turned to Linna. "You silenced him, so you should get him to talk."
"Ah... Me?" Linna made a face and was quite unwilling.
"Who else? Did you forget what I taught you?" Paisley's gaze grew sharp.
Linna's real name wasn't Linna, but Thrice Yates in full. It was a simple name, meaning the third child of the Yates family.
Because she was a girl, her parents, who favored sons over daughters, sold her to an old bachelor.
They told others it was a temporary foster arrangement, but the truth was obvious.
So, after Linna crippled the old bachelor, she ran away. While wandering and hiding, she met Paisley. Paisley took her in and taught her the Ancient Medical Arts.
Linna was really smart, but she was a mischievous girl. She wasn't particularly interested in the Ancient Medical Arts and found it hard to settle down and study properly.
But she was very interested in fighting and often got Paisley into trouble.
In desperation, Paisley sent Linna to Jake, asking him to teach her some self-defense skills. It seemed like that unlocked something in the girl, and she couldn't stop learning.
Later, Linna called Jake "Master" and called Paisley "Teacher."
Now, hearing Paisley ask her to treat this man, Linna looked troubled, but after meeting Paisley's sharp gaze, she quickly shook her head. "No, no... I didn't forget... I'll treat him..."
Though mischievous, Linna was really smart. Once she learned something, it was hard for her to forget.
Treating external injuries or setting bones wasn't a problem for her. When the security guards under Jake's command got hurt, they usually asked her to help treat them.
Over the next two days, Paisley's life seemed to return to how it was at the beginning.
Since Serena was still in recovery, she spent most of her time in bed. Even if she needed to go somewhere, they either carried her or pushed her in a small cart.
As a result, Paisley's main focus now was taking care of Serena and going back and forth to the set.
"Something this big happened, yet you didn't tell me? Are we still good friends?" In the restaurant, Emery put down her knife and fork angrily after hearing Paisley's recent experience.
She complained, but her eyes were red.
"Didn't I just tell you?" Paisley picked up a tissue and wiped Emery's tears. "What's the matter? Are you crying just because I didn't tell you?"
Emery snatched the tissue away, shooting Paisley an angry glance. "What do you mean crying? I'm happy for you, okay? My dear, finally someone cares for you."
Paisley felt warmth in her heart and gently comforted her, "Okay, stop crying. Haven't I always had you to care for me?"
Emery pouted, her voice quivering, "It's not the same. No matter how good I am to you, it can't replace the love of your parents."
Emery wiped away her tears and sniffed. "Damn those wolf-like couple, I swear I want to rip them apart myself. I've seen favoritism before, but never this extreme. Seems like you're not even their biological daughter."
Emery clutched the tissue she had used to wipe her tears tightly, as if she wasn't holding a tissue, but Christina and Gregory.
"Baby." Emery looked at Paisley, puzzled. "Since you're not their biological daughter, and it was that damn Christina who purposely abandoned you, how did you end up finding them through the police?"
Paisley thought back to when the police brought her back to the Sullivan family. "It was through the DNA database."
"But you're not their biological daughter?"
Paisley said, "It doesn't matter if I'm their biological daughter or not. After I went missing, they must have submitted my genetic sample to the police. The police have a specialized DNA database for trafficking cases. As long as the DNA matches, they can confirm my identity."
So, years later, when Paisley wanted to find her family, the police used the sample that had been stored in their database to locate the Sullivan family.
"But I don't get it. You said that damn Christina purposely abandoned you. If that's the case, why would she give your genetic sample to the police?" This question from Emery was something Paisley had thought about too.
Since Christina had wanted her dead back then, she definitely wouldn't have wanted to find her, much less call the police. But in the end, Christina still reported it to the police and handed over her DNA sample.
So, there must have been some compelling reason that forced Christina to do that.
Before lunch was over, Linna's message came through. The man who had tried to kill her was able to speak now.
With Emery still grumbling, Paisley quickly finished lunch and headed to Linna.
When she arrived, sure enough, the man's face had already swollen down, and his features became clearer.
This was the first time Paisley really looked at him face-to-face. He had thick eyebrows, bright eyes, and a high nose bridge. It was clear that he must have been a good-looking man when he was younger.
Unfortunately, after the years had treated him harshly, his skin had become rough.
Long periods without proper care had caused his face to be pockmarked, with many blackheads and pimples.
As soon as he saw Paisley enter, a vicious look appeared on his face. If his hands and feet weren't restrained by Linna, he probably would've charged at her.
"Tell your people to let me go. You're illegally detaining me." He could speak now, though his voice was a little raspy.
There was nothing to be done; after all, it was Linna's fault for being too rough and knocking his teeth out.
Linna slapped the man on the back of his head. "You still know about illegal detention? What about murderers, don't they break the law?"
The man kept his face serious, sneering coldly, "Murder? You're slandering me!"
"Oh? You are still acting, huh?" Linna threw a stack of photos at the man. "I've got everything on camera: you stalking my teacher and trying to kill her. You thought there'd be no evidence just because the place where you dumped the abandoned props had no cameras?"
The man glanced down at the photos, but his expression didn't change. "What if there's evidence? She's still alive. Worst case, I'll be locked up for a few years, but I'm not afraid."
Paisley knew he wasn't lying—he really wasn't afraid at all.
Those cold, sinister eyes seemed to say, "When I get out of here, I'll finish what I started."
"What did Christina give you to make you so fearless in doing her bidding?" Linna asked. With his resolute attitude, it was clear that money wasn't the only reason.
"What Christina? I don't know any Christina." The man denied.
Linna shoved the photo of him meeting Christina right in his face. "Open your eyes and take a good look."
