Back in the car, Dominick couldn't calm down for a long time. He pressed his thumb and middle finger against his eyes, his lips tightly pursed.
Just then, Julian called. "Dom, the higher-ups aren't happy. When are you coming back?"
He took a deep breath. "I'm heading back now."
Outside the studio, the car sped away, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Paisley stared blankly at the scene outside, feeling a headache coming on.
"Paisley, Mr. Vanderbilt seems to have misunderstood your relationship with Mr. Godard. Do you want to explain?" Lucy asked.
She had always disliked how Dominick treated her teacher in the past, but just now, seeing him shattered and roaring in anger... why did she feel a little sorry for him?
Realizing this, Lucy immediately snapped herself out of it.
Paisley thought, 'No way. Lucy. Never pity a man. Pitying a man ruins your whole life.'
Paisley sighed. Just as she turned around, she saw that everyone in the studio was watching her.
"Let's get back to work," she smiled awkwardly and told everyone, "Sorry for the delay. I'll treat you all to afternoon coffee later."
"Alright, back to work," Gary said, and everyone resumed their tasks.
After what just happened, Sam and his manager took Paisley even more seriously. They had never seen a powerful man so hung up on his ex-wife.
Sheela jogged over. She was already quite familiar with Paisley, so she leaned in and whispered, "Nion, I think Mr. Vanderbilt is completely at your mercy."
Her eyes were filled with admiration and awe. "Nion, you're truly a role model for us all."
Paisley chuckled and playfully tapped Sheela's smooth forehead. "Get to work."
At Brightmoor Airport, Leo walked over with the boarding passes and reminded Max, "Max, it's time to board."
Max put his phone away, stood up, but started walking toward the airport exit instead.
"Huh? Max? Aren't we going to Harrowfell to find the young lady?" Leo asked.
After receiving a concerned call from the officer about the young lady, Max had been trying to contact her, but she never picked up. So, he had planned to bring people to Harrowfell.
"No need. Paisy's fine." Max finally felt relieved. Since Paisley was okay, he decided to return to the hospital instead.
"Oh." Leo didn't ask further and followed him with the others.
He thought, 'As long as the young lady is safe, that is all that matters. If anything had happened to her, both Max and Mr. Godard would have lost their minds.'
When Max returned to the ward, he saw Ocean helping Tyson walk inside.
"Dad, did the doctor say you could get out of bed?" Max asked.
Tyson nodded. "Yes. He said some walking would help with my recovery."
"That's right, Max. If the doctor hadn't said so, I wouldn't have let him get up," Ocean explained.
Max walked over and took Tyson's arm from Ocean, personally supporting him as he walked slowly.
"Where did you just go? Dom said you left looking pale," Tyson asked casually, but his sharp eyes were fixed on Max. "Did something happen to Paisy?"
Max knew that if he didn't explain, his adoptive father would overthink things, so he said, "It was just a misunderstanding. After Paisy left Director Wane's place, she didn't seem right.
"Director Wane was worried and called me. I couldn't reach her, so I got concerned and thought about going to Harrowfell to check on her."
"Huh? Is Paisy okay?" Tyson clutched Max's hand tightly.
He had only just found his daughter. If something happened to her, he couldn't even imagine what he would do.
"She's fine." Max quickly reassured him. "Paisy was working on set and had her phone on silent, so she didn't hear my calls. I've already gotten in touch with her. Dad, don't worry."
"Really?" Tyson still wasn't convinced. "No, I need to call Paisy right now."
"Dad, she's really working. Even if you want to call, at least wait a bit," Max said, knowing Tyson wouldn't calm down otherwise. So, he decided to bring up Dominick.
"You mean Paisy's ex-husband? Dominick?" Tyson's brows furrowed, and his face darkened.
This time, it wasn't because of his health—it was pure anger.
He knew about the Vanderbilt family in Harrowfell. There was no way he wouldn't. It was of the two great families of Harrowfell, alongside the Beaumont family.
But unlike the Beaumont family, the Vanderbilt family had no internal power struggles or chaos.
Tyson had to admit that Dominick had a sharp mind for management and business.
Over the past few years, under his leadership, the Vanderbilt family had steadily surpassed the Beaumont family's Axion Enterprises.
Back then, Tyson had a good impression of the young man and thought he was quite capable. He never expected that Dominick would break his precious daughter's heart.
Seeing that Tyson's attention had successfully shifted and that he was clearly displeased with Dominick, Max couldn't help but curl his lips into a smile.
After pacing around the ward a few times, Max helped Tyson onto the bed to rest.
Just then, Morris called again.
He looked at Tyson. "It's Morris."
Tyson nodded, signaling him to pick up.
As soon as the call connected, Morris's slightly ingratiating voice came through the receiver. "Uncle, are you busy right now?"
Max said, "Not at all. Go ahead."
Though they were about the same age, Max's seniority in the family created a clear power imbalance whenever they spoke.
"It's like this—Christina really wants to reunite with Tyson as soon as possible. If his health doesn't allow for a visit right now, would it be possible to send her hair sample over first? That way, they can do a paternity test. Once the results are out, everyone can feel at ease, right?"
The call was on speaker, so Tyson could hear everything Morris said. His eyes carried a hint of mockery as he nodded at Max again.
"That's fine, but to ensure the sample's security, I'll send someone to retrieve it myself."
"Of course," Morris agreed readily.
After ending the call, Tyson let out a sneer. "Looks like they can't wait any longer."
In the flower hall at the Beaumont estate, Christina asked anxiously, "So? Did Mr. Godard agree?"
Morris, now a far cry from the deferential tone he had used with Max, resumed the arrogance befitting a successor of an old-money family when addressing Christina. "Yes, he agreed, but instead of us sending it over, they'll send someone to collect it."
Hearing this, Christina let out a sigh of relief.
But just then, Brittany's puzzled voice rang out. "Honestly, there's no need to rush. I'm the Godard family's daughter—that's an undeniable fact. A paternity test is just a formality. What difference does a day or two make? It's not like you can kick me out."
She looked at Morris and Julia.
Julia quickly forced a smile. "Of course not."
"Good." Brittany nodded in satisfaction before adding coquettishly, "Oh, by the way, I wasn't happy with that chef in the kitchen yesterday. Fire him and find someone else to cook for me."
"Alright," Julia agreed, but Brittany failed to notice how stiff her smile had become.
The next afternoon, Max's people rushed to Brightmoor overnight to retrieve Brittany's hair sample.
Immediately after, two forensic analysts began testing it without delay.
By late that night, the results were in.
Result One: [The DNA sample belonged to Tyson's biological daughter.]
Result Two: [The DNA sample matched Paisley.]
