Today, Paisley didn't have to go to the film set, so she could stay home with Serena.
Serena was overjoyed and clung to Paisley, asking her to tell stories for a long time. They were all stories she had heard many times before, but she never got tired of them.
"Alright, we finished this one. What should we read next?" Paisley's mouth was dry from storytelling. As she took a sip of water, she noticed The Little Mermaid tucked away in the corner by Serena and pulled it out. "How about this one?"
It had been a long time since Serena had asked her to read The Little Mermaid. But when Serena saw the book cover, she pouted, "No, I've outgrown The Little Mermaid."
"Huh?" Paisley looked at the bed, which was covered with princess storybooks.
"Mommy, I think the little mermaid is silly." Serena nestled into Paisley's arms, blinking her big eyes as she spoke seriously.
"Why do you think that? Didn't you used to feel sorry for her?"
Paisley remembered that the first time she had read Serena the original version of The Little Mermaid, Serena had cried her heart out when the mermaid turned into sea foam, insisting that the prince should have married her.
It wasn't until she watched the revised animated version that she finally cheered up.
Serena nodded solemnly. "She's not pitiful at all. She was a princess of the sea, the daughter of the mermaid king. She was happier than all the other little fish.
"But she insisted on becoming human for a prince who didn't even know she existed. And in the end, she couldn't bear to hurt him and turned into sea foam. Sea foam disappears in an instant.
"Her sisters cut off their beautiful long hair and traded it for a knife with the witch just to save her. But she was so infuriating—she'd rather turn into sea foam. She really let her sisters down."
It was clear that Serena truly believed this. The more she spoke, the angrier she got, her chubby cheeks puffing up in frustration.
Paisley was surprised. She hadn't expected the little girl to have such thoughts.
"So, you don't agree with what the little mermaid did?" she asked.
Serena nodded. "I don't. If it were me, I would never do something like that. So, she was just a fool. Mom, do you think I'm right?"
Paisley looked down at her daughter, gently stroking her cheek. "Yes, you're right. Baby, remember this—you're one of a kind in this world. No one is worth sacrificing yourself for. Always be yourself."
"Okay." Serena nodded firmly, then picked up another storybook and handed it to Paisley. "Mom, I want to hear this one."
Paisley took a look. As expected, it was another story about Princess Elsa.
"Alright." She flipped through the book while thinking to herself, 'If, when I was little, my mother had been there to tell me the same thing, would I have learned to love myself sooner when I grew up?'
"Paisy, stop reading for a moment." Maria knocked on the door and walked in, interrupting the mother and daughter's story time.
"What's wrong?" Paisley asked.
Maria pointed outside. "Mr. Godard from next door is back, and this time, he brought a middle-aged man in a wheelchair. They're right outside our house. That man... is he the one you—"
Since returning, Paisley had already told Maria the general details of what had happened in Brightmoor.
So when she saw Max bringing that middle-aged man back, she immediately guessed his identity.
"It should be him." Paisley's gaze darkened. She put down the book, got out of bed, and walked toward the door.
Seeing Paisley leave, Serena panicked and insisted on going too.
Maria had no choice but to pick her up and put her in the stroller, then pushed her outside.
As soon as Paisley stepped out of the villa, she saw Max pushing Tyson in a wheelchair in the yard.
Behind them were Ocean, Leo and the others.
"Why did you suddenly come here?" Paisley's face was cold as she questioned them. Then she looked at Max. "And you went along with this nonsense?"
Tyson still needed to stay in the hospital for some time to fully recover.
He had been poisoned—fatally poisoned.
Although his life had been saved and the toxins removed, his organs had suffered varying degrees of damage.
Right now, Tyson was as fragile as a newborn baby, with an extremely weak immune system. Any slight mistake could cause serious problems.
A cold wind blew past, and Paisley's expression darkened even more. "Come inside first. We'll talk later."
After saying that, she turned around and walked into the villa with a stiff expression.
In the living room, a group of grown men stood around, staring at each other in silence. No one dared to speak. They were all watching Paisley's reaction.
When Maria pushed Serena inside, this was the scene she walked into.
"Why... why isn't anyone talking?" Maria couldn't stand the suffocating vibe.
"Paisy, don't be mad." In the end, it was Max who spoke first. "It all happened so suddenly, we—"
"Max!" The moment Serena saw Max, she got so excited that she shouted in joy, her happiness overflowing.
Serena's presence instantly shattered the oppressive tension that Paisley had brought into the room. She was like a little sun, seemingly able to dispel all the gloom.
A smile appeared on Max's face as he stepped forward, reaching out to pick up Serena.
Paisley said, "Don't touch my daughter if you haven't washed your hands."
Max immediately froze in place, stopping just short of taking another step forward. His expression showed clear regret.
He thought, 'How could I have forgotten? The little girl has only recently undergone surgery for a ruptured spleen and is still recovering.'
They had just traveled a long way, covered in dust and germs.
At that moment, Tyson finally laid eyes on the granddaughter he had been longing to see day and night.
"Are you Rena?" He sat in the wheelchair, his eyes level with Serena's.
His usually stern face now held a smile unlike anything he had ever shown before. Even Leo and his nephew behind him were stunned by the sight.
Right now, he couldn't help but think that it had been so long since he'd seen Tyson smile like that.
Serena looked at the unfamiliar Tyson in front of her, blinking in confusion before nodding. "Yes, I'm Rena. Sir, who are you? Are you Max's dad?"
The little girl was even cuter in person than in her photos. If the situation allowed, Tyson really wanted to scoop her up into his arms.
"I'm not Sir, I'm..." Tyson glanced at Paisley cautiously. Seeing that she didn't seem to mind, he finally said, "I'm your maternal grandpa. You should call me Grandpa."
"Maternal grandpa?" Serena was unfamiliar with the term. She blinked and looked at Paisley. "Mom, what does maternal grandpa mean?"
Paisley crouched beside Serena's stroller. "He's my father."
Serena's grape-like eyes swirled in her sockets. "Maternal grandpa means Mom's dad, right?"
The child's innocent question struck a chord in everyone present.
Tyson looked at Paisley, both nervous and expectant, longing to hear her response.
Paisley tightened her grip on the stroller's edge. "Yes, he's my father—your maternal grandpa, by blood."
As soon as she finished speaking, Paisley could clearly hear Tyson let out a sigh of relief.
"Yes, Rena, I'm not some strange old man. I'm your grandpa, your real grandpa." Tyson's voice was slightly choked with emotion. His face still carried a bright, flower-like smile, but his eyes were red.
"Paisy, where should I wash my hands?" He wanted to wash his hands, then hug the adorable child, even if just to sit beside her for a moment.
