"That's not how things work, right, Mr. Levine?" It was Morris who spoke this time.
This entire banquet had been arranged according to Brittany's wishes, and its sole purpose was to please her.
That meant there could be no people or events here that displeased her.
Chris looked at Morris, his expression growing even darker.
He knew all too well the power of capital.
Just like how, if he had extended a helping hand to Gregory back then, the Sullivan Group wouldn't have gone bankrupt.
Now, if the Beaumont family decided to make things difficult for him, the Levine family could become the next Sullivan Group.
"I get it." Daisy had made up her mind. Right in front of everyone, she slapped herself twice—loud and clear.
At the end of the day, this had all started because she had mocked Brittany. Now, she couldn't just stand by and watch her parents suffer humiliation because of her.
Layla hugged her daughter tightly, her eyes red with heartache.
Chris clenched his jaw to suppress his anger and turned to Brittany. "Are you satisfied now, Miss Godard?"
In truth, Brittany wasn't satisfied. Just two slaps were not enough to quell the hatred in her heart.
She was about to say more when Julia discreetly tugged at her sleeve.
This matter shouldn't be pushed too far, or else it would make the Godard family look overly aggressive.
If this brought negative repercussions to the Godard family, it wouldn't be easy to explain to Byron.
Unfortunately, Brittany had no concept of moderation.
When she felt Julia pulling her back, she was instantly annoyed and glared at her. "Why are you holding me back?"
Julia hadn't expected Brittany to be so brainless and looked embarrassed. "Cousin..."
Just then, a commotion arose at the entrance. Julia turned to look and was surprised to see the Vanderbilt family had arrived.
"Cousin, it's the Vanderbilt family."
At the mention of the Vanderbilt family, Brittany's eyes instantly lit up. She turned to look and immediately spotted Dominick, standing out from the crowd.
She thought Dominick—no matter where he stood—was always the center of the universe.
Her entire attention was now on Dominick. She no longer had the mood to torment Daisy. "Alright, let's leave it at that for today."
The Levine family could hear the implication behind Brittany's words—just for today. That meant she wasn't done with them yet.
Brittany left in high spirits, feeling utterly satisfied after dealing with the Levine family.
It was just a shame that Paisley, that wretched woman, wasn't here. If she had been, Brittany would have dealt with her too.
But then again, at an event like this, a divorced woman like Paisley wouldn't have been qualified to enter anyway.
Today was the perfect day for her to use her charm to win over Dominick.
Once that happened, Paisley wouldn't even have Dominick as her supporter anymore—let's see what she would do then.
As they entered the banquet hall, Dominick walked side by side with Reginald, while Lauren and Kayla followed beside them.
Paul and Grayson didn't come.
The Vanderbilt family was different from other prestigious families, especially now that Dominick held an unparalleled status in Harrowfell.
Naturally, upon their arrival, the Beaumont family members all came forward to greet them.
Byron was particularly fond of Dominick, often imagining that if this young man were his grandson, he wouldn't have to hold onto power at his old age, unwilling to step aside.
"Byron, it's been a long time," Reginald greeted him on behalf of the Vanderbilt family.
Byron smiled and nodded, his attitude toward the Vanderbilt family noticeably warmer than toward others. "So, your grandpa and the little grandson didn't come?"
"Grandpa isn't in good health and can't travel, and Sonny had schoolwork to finish," Dominick explained in a gentle tone.
"I see, well, your grandfather is a lucky man," Byron said with a hint of envy, not caring about how his own descendants felt about his words.
Dominick's expression remained indifferent as he glanced at the Beaumont family, spotting Nathaniel almost immediately at the very end of the group.
His brow furrowed slightly, though it was barely noticeable.
Nathaniel had also seen Dominick. He raised his chin arrogantly and met his gaze.
Nathaniel thought, 'What? You despicable man. Even after getting rid of me, you still haven't won Paisley back, have you?'
Dominick ignored Nathaniel's provocation, treating him as if he didn't exist.
Not far away, Brittany watched Dominick, feeling restless. She turned to Christina. "Mom, do I look beautiful?"
"Yes, beautiful," Christina answered absentmindedly. She knew the Vanderbilt family would be here tonight,
but she really didn't want to interact with anyone connected to Paisley.
Brittany, however, had no such reservations. Excited, she was about to head toward Dominick.
Christina quickly grabbed her. "Where are you going?"
"What do you mean where? I'm going to say hello to Dominick. And while I'm at it, I'll make sure he gets to know me properly. If things go well, I'll have Uncle arrange a marriage between us." Brittany was already fantasizing about it.
Christina shattered her daydream. "Absolutely not."
"Why not?" Brittany asked, confused.
Christina couldn't reveal her true thoughts, so she explained, "You'll be returning to Montera to marry into the Godard family. When the time comes, they'll find you a suitable match. Dominick is from Harrowfell—he's too far away. Besides, he's divorced and has a child."
But Brittany wasn't deterred. "So what? I don't care."
"I said no, and that's final." Christina held onto her. "There are so many men out there. Why are you so fixated on Paisley's ex-husband?"
Brittany scoffed, "Exactly because he's Paisley's ex-husband, I have to have him. Why should she be allowed to have him, but I can't? I have a much higher status than Paisley now."
She refused to believe that, as she was now, she couldn't attract Dominick.
"Brittany, listen to me—"
"Enough, Mrs. Sullivan!" Brittany impatiently pushed Christina away. "You're not even my real mother, so stop meddling in my business."
"Brittany, what did you just say?"
"You heard me. You and your husband have taken plenty of benefits from the Beaumont family through me. I won't bring it up, but we both know it's true.
"Since you did adopt me, I'll make sure you're taken care of in the future. But you need to recognize your place and stay out of my affairs." With that, she ignored Christina's hurt expression and walked straight toward Dominick.
