"It's nothing. Teddy just proposed to me," Emery said, looking troubled. "Why the hell would he do that out of nowhere?"
Paisley couldn't help but laugh. This wasn't the first time a man had proposed to Emery. But back then, Emery had always turned them down without a second thought. And as a bonus, she'd block and delete them from her life completely.
Paisley had never seen her this troubled before. "So? Are you planning to block and delete him like before?"
Emery flopped onto the couch and ruffled her hair in frustration. "I don't know. This is so annoying."
Paisley could tell Emery actually had feelings for Teddy this time. "Then you really need to think it through."
This wasn't something Paisley could decide for her. In the end, it was up to Emery.
"What should I think about?" Emery shot up suddenly. "That idiot Teddy is messing with my peace of mind. I'll let him stew for a few days and deal with it after Christmas."
"Running away won't solve anything," Paisley said thoughtfully. "Why don't you come with me to Montera for Christmas?"
Emery's family situation was complicated, so she usually spent Christmas with Paisley.
"Nah, I'll pass," Emery refused without hesitation. "I'm planning to go abroad for a while and clear my head. I'll be back after Christmas."
"That works too," Paisley said, not pushing her. She was already anxious about facing the Godard family in Montera for the first time. No one knew what would happen.
"Oh, right." Emery's mood shifted as quickly as always. "Has that scumbag Dominick been bothering you lately?"
Paisley had been so buried in work that she only now realized she hadn't seen Dominick in a while.
"Nope," She spoke calmly, completely unfazed by his disappearance.
"Huh? Weird," Emery said, stroking her chin. "What's up with that scumbag? Gave up already?"
She thought, 'That doesn't make sense. Wasn't he all desperate and dramatic about chasing after her Paisy just a while ago?'
"Maybe he finally came to his senses," Paisley said indifferently.
"Well, that's good. Now you can both move on," Emery nodded before suddenly grinning mischievously. "I think Max is a great option for you."
Paisley was speechless. "What are you talking about? He's my brother." She put extra emphasis on the word "brother."
Emery shrugged. "So what? You guys aren't blood-related, right?"
To Emery, there wasn't much difference between an adopted brother and a live-in son-in-law.
Paisley chuckled, "Can you not mess around?"
"I'm not messing around," Emery said, wrapping an arm around Paisley's waist. "Seriously, think about it. He's just as good as Dominick—maybe even better. He looks great and has a killer body too."
"You're getting more ridiculous by the second." Paisley pushed Emery away, exasperated. "I'm not interested in dating right now. Being single is great. I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. At least I'm not pulling my hair out like you."
Seeing Emery's defeated expression, Paisley smirked, "Men only slow down my sword-drawing speed."
The next day, Paisley took Serena to the airport.
At the Vanderbilt Group president's office, Dominick had just returned from a business trip abroad, looking utterly exhausted.
Julian knocked and walked in. "Paisley and her daughter just boarded a flight to Montera."
Dominick nodded. "Got it."
He turned to the window, his mind replaying Max's words from that day. He thought, 'So, in the end, Paisley is choosing to return to Montera after all?'
"Dom." Julian looked at him with concern.
Dominick had been insanely busy these past few months, barely stopping to rest. Even on flights, he never stopped working.
Rubbing his temples tiredly, Dominick finally slumped into his chair. "Pass the word down. Starting tomorrow, I'm officially on leave. Whatever comes up, it can wait until I'm back."
"Understood," Julian said. "You really do need a break."
Ever since Dominick took over as president of Vanderbilt Group, he hadn't taken a proper rest.
The employees all had vacation time, but as the boss, Dominick worked nonstop.
Especially in the past few years, after Paisley left, it had been nonstop work on top of heartbreak for him.
Julian was genuinely worried that if this kept up, Dominick's body wouldn't hold out.
"Book me a flight to Montera for the day after tomorrow," Dominick said.
Julian froze. "Dom, you're going to Montera?"
"Yeah." Dominick nodded. If Paisley was going to Montera, then of course he had to go too. "Not just mine—book one for Sonny as well. We're going together."
Julian was stunned. He thought, 'So, has Dom been working day and night just to free up some time to take his son to see Paisley in Montera?'
Paisley and Serena arrived in Montera in the afternoon, and Max came to pick them up himself.
The moment Serena saw Max, she shouted excitedly, "Uncle!"
It had been a while since Max last saw Serena, and hearing her call him that just melted his heart. He immediately picked her up and asked, "Did you miss me?"
"Yeah!" Serena nodded eagerly, her eyes sparkling with excitement at being in a new place.
"How much did you miss me?" Max pressed on, his voice teasing.
Serena giggled and pointed at her heart. "I missed you heart and soul."
Max planted a kiss on her cheek before taking the luggage from Paisley. "Dad's still in a meeting, so he asked me to pick you up first and take you home."
A tall, well-built Max carried an adorable little Serena in his arms, balancing luggage in his other hand, while standing beside the stunning Paisley. The three of them made such a striking sight that they couldn’t help but draw the attention of passersby.
"Uncle, is my big castle ready?" Serena was still thinking about her castle.
