Ever since Tyson had promised to build Serena a big castle at their Montera home, Serena had been daydreaming about it almost every day.
Every few days, she would call Tyson all the way in Montera to ask how the construction was going and beg him to let her see it.
But Tyson, being the playful grandpa that he was, kept it a secret, telling her she had to come to Montera to see it for herself.
That had driven Serena crazy with impatience. Every morning, the first thing she did after waking up was ask Paisley when they could go to Montera.
So, the reason Serena was so excited to see Max now wasn't actually because she missed her uncle that much. A big part of it was knowing that she was finally about to see her castle.
Kids were terrible at hiding their true thoughts. One moment, Serena was saying she missed Max, and the next, she was asking about the castle.
Max saw right through Serena but didn't call her out on it. Instead, he just found her even more adorable. "It's ready. You'll see your castle as soon as we get home."
"Yay! Let's go home!" Serena cheered, throwing her hands up in excitement, her little legs kicking excitedly in Max's arms.
"Rena," Paisley warned.
But Max didn't mind at all. In fact, he loved how she was so at ease with him. "It's fine. Don't scold her."
Paisley was speechless.
Even so, Serena was a well-behaved kid who always listened to Paisley. The moment she saw Paisley's warning look, she quieted down obediently.
Leo was waiting at the airport exit with several bodyguards. Seeing a group of stern-faced men standing there, the people passing by instinctively kept their distance.
They looked like the kind of people didn't want to mess with. No one wanted to risk getting on their bad side.
As soon as Paisley followed Max out of the airport, she saw them. She had thought only Max would come pick her up, maybe with Leo as the driver. She hadn't expected him to bring so many people that they could form a whole soccer team.
And that was not even counting the ones who would have to sit on the bench as substitutes.
Seeing the awkward look on Paisley's face, Max explained, "Mr. Lynn insisted. He was worried about security on the way."
The "Mr. Lynn" Max was referring to was Leo's uncle, Ocean. Max didn't spell it out, but Paisley got the message.
As Tyson's only blood relative in the Godard family, her right to inherit was undeniable—regardless of whether she was a man or a woman. Even Max couldn't outrank her.
Back in Brightmoor, Paisley had witnessed firsthand how Edmond operated. If that hadn't been Brightmoor, her own turf, her father, her adoptive brother, and even Ocean and Leo might not have made it out alive.
Now that she was back, there was no way the Godard family in Montera wouldn't have noticed. So, it was completely understandable that Ocean would take extra precautions.
Originally, Paisley had planned to bring Linna with her. With Linna around, at least she and Serena's personal safety wouldn't be a concern. But something had suddenly come up with Jake in Brightmoor.
Compared to that, Paisley going to Montera with Max and Tyson's protection seemed like the safer option, so she had Linna go back to Brightmoor to help Jake instead.
When Paisley stepped outside, Leo, who had been wearing a cold expression, immediately switched to a fawning smile. He hurried over and took the luggage from Max.
He knew Paisley didn't like other people touching her backpack, so he didn't even bother offering to carry it.
"Miss Paisley, must've been a tiring trip," Leo said with a grin, looking every bit like a bootlicker.
Paisley felt a chill run down her spine. She still preferred the old Leo—the one who was usually all serious but occasionally a little dumb.
"Well, not really." With VIP lounges and first-class seats all the way, there was nothing tiring about it.
Leo turned around instantly, his expression changing in a flash. He snapped in a cold voice, "Why aren't you greeting her?"
And just like that, right at the airport entrance, a group of well-trained men stood in perfect formation and shouted in unison, their voices loud and clear, "Miss Paisley!"
Hit with extreme awkwardness, Paisley went speechless.
The last time she felt this embarrassed was because of Jake, but back then, they were in Brightmoor—her territory—and it was indoors. But now, Montera airport was packed with people.
While Paisley was drowning in secondhand embarrassment, Serena was clearly enjoying the moment.
She giggled, clapped her little hands, and cheered in her sweet baby voice, "So neat and in sync!"
Seeing Serena, Leo immediately reacted. "This is the young miss!"
Before Paisley could stop him, that deafening "Young Miss!" had already echoed through the air.
Serena clapped even harder. "Leo, these guys are amazing!"
Her classmates, who could never sing or speak in sync, paled in comparison. Thinking about kindergarten, Serena felt a brief wave of sadness. Ever since she got sick, she hadn't been to kindergarten for a long time. She really missed Ms. Johnson and all her little friends.
But Paisley said the kindergarten was on break now, and once they got back to Harrowfell from Montera, she could go again.
Leo saw how happy Serena was and was just about to get his men to shout "Young Miss" again.
Sensing where this was headed, Paisley quickly cut in, "Alright, that's enough. It's freezing out here."
Montera was colder than both Harrowfell and Brightmoor. The wind was sharp against their faces, the air was bone-dry—it wasn't a place to be standing around for long.
Inside the car, the heater had already been running, quickly warming them up.
The moment Serena got in, she started clamoring to call Grandpa. Paisley told her he was in a meeting and couldn't take the call. But Max, without saying a word, had already dialed Tyson. And not just a call—it was a video call.
At the last shareholders' meeting of the year, Tyson, as the head of the corporation, sat in the highest seat of authority.
Everyone sat below him, watching his every move and analyzing his every word.
Even the slightest glance from him was scrutinized and overanalyzed by those with an agenda.
Edmond, a key figure in the company, was also at the meeting today. But he could only sit below Tyson.
There was no helping it. That supreme position could only belong to one person.
On stage, a man was nervously finishing his year-end report, speaking under immense pressure. The moment he looked up, his eyes met Tyson's piercing, king-like gaze.
"Edmond, he's under your management, isn't he?" Tyson didn't look at Edmond but was clearly addressing him. His disregard and condescension couldn't have been clearer.
Edmond's eyes flickered with venom as he glanced at the man on stage. Then, he stood up, facing all the shareholders and senior executives of the company, and said, "Yes, that project is under my supervision."
Tyson lifted his eyelids slightly, his gaze sweeping across the room. "I'll give you one more year. If this project doesn't improve, there's no point in continuing it.
"Or maybe it's just your own lack of ability. If that's the case, I'll find someone to share the burden. I think Zim is a great choice—his performance over the past year has been outstanding."
The Zim Tyson mentioned was none other than the husband of his fourth sister, Josie from the Godard family.
Sitting two seats behind Edmond, Zim beamed at the mention of his name.
Every year, the Godard Group invested in many ventures—some succeeded, some didn't. But to Tyson, these were nothing more than insignificant profits.
For Edmond, however, who was desperate to prove he was just as capable as Tyson, every bit of power he held was crucial.
Tyson's words right now were no different from a public humiliation.
"Understood, Chairman. I'll make sure to deliver satisfactory results next year." Edmond clenched his jaw just to maintain his composure and elegance in front of everyone.
In the massive conference room, silence fell over the crowd. And then, suddenly, an ill-timed video call ringtone rang through the air.
Everyone in the room was on edge as they quickly checked their surroundings. They thought, 'Who could be stupid enough to leave their phone on anything but vibrate or silent on a day like this?'
After looking around, they realized it was Tyson's phone.
