Paisley had planned to carry Serena out of the car herself, but Max beat her to it, expertly lifting Serena into his arms. Worried she might be cold, he even took off his coat and wrapped her up like a little bundle.
The butler and servants all saw this and, after their initial surprise, couldn't help but sigh.
They were astonished that a man like Max knew how to take care of a child—it was clear he had put in real effort to learn.
But they also felt a pang of regret. If Max hadn't been seriously injured back then, he probably would've had a wife and children by now. He would have made an amazing father.
Just as the butler was lost in thought, the next second, his gaze landed on a strikingly beautiful face.
He blinked in surprise, and then said emotionally, "This must be the young miss."
Tyson was the eldest son and the current head of the Godard family. His biological daughter was, without a doubt, the rightful young miss of the Godard family.
"This is Butler Cole," Max introduced.
In fact, Cole the butler was only ten years younger than Anna. Technically, even someone like Max should respect him as an elder.
"Nice to meet you, Cole." Paisley greeted politely.
"Miss, welcome. Anna and Tyson have been looking forward to your arrival every single day. Come inside quickly—it's cold out here," as he spoke, Cole subtly observed Paisley. Her elegance, her refined speech—there was no way she was just some ordinary woman.
Personally leading Paisley and Serena to their rooms, Cole took them to the third floor of the main building—an entire floor just for Paisley and Serena.
"The master has given instructions—this whole floor is yours, Miss. No one is allowed to disturb you without your permission. So you and Miss Rena can stay here in peace. If you need anything, just let me know. Don't be fooled by my age—I'm still in great shape," Cole chuckled.
Paisley thanked him before leading Serena into the room. The room was stunning, with even the smallest decorations being luxurious and expensive.
"Alright, we won't disturb you any longer. If you need anything, just call me," Cole said before leaving with the servants.
"Wait, wasn't she supposed to have been raised outside with no education and bad manners?"
"Yeah, I heard she was short-sighted and only cared about buying luxury goods."
"And isn't she a single mom? Her private life must be a mess."
"But she didn't seem that way to me just now. She was polite and looked pretty sophisticated."
"Yeah, and she didn't even react to all the expensive stuff in her room. Doesn't seem like someone who only cares about material things."
"Hah, maybe she's just pretending. Or maybe she doesn't even recognize how valuable those things are."
"What are you all gossiping about?" Cole, who had been walking ahead, suddenly turned around and glared at the chattering servants with clear disapproval.
They quickly stood still, looking flustered.
"That's the eldest miss you're talking about! Do you think you can just gossip like that? You trying to get yourselves fired?"
No way they wanted to lose their jobs. Working as a servant in the Godard family was way better than slaving away outside.
The work environment was nice, the workload wasn't too heavy, and they could get off on time. Most importantly, the pay was great.
Other than serving people and dealing with their moods, there wasn't anything bad about it. Besides, not everyone in the Godard family was hard to serve.
"Where did you even hear all that from?" Cole knew that rumors like these didn't just come out of nowhere.
The youngest maid hesitated before speaking up, "We heard it from Ms. Keeley."
Cole's brows furrowed. "Keeley?"
"Yeah." The young maid nodded.
Cole got irritated. He disliked Keeley the most in the Godard estate.
Keeley acted like she owned the place just because her brother was Josie's husband. She wasn't even a Godard, yet she had no sense of restraint.
'Honestly, it's Josie's fault for spoiling her. But still, how did Keeley even get this information? Someone must've told her,' Cole thought for a moment, glanced toward the second residence, and then shook his head.
Back when Byron was around, the Godard family had been peaceful. But ever since the old master passed, things had started to change.
The only reason things still looked harmonious on the surface was because Anna was still here. When Anna was gone, it would be terrible.
"I'm warning you—watch your mouths. If you don't, don't blame me for kicking you out. There's no shortage of people wanting to work here, got it?" Cole's voice was stern.
The group, a mix of men and women, nodded frantically at his words.
"Get back to work," Cole barked, and they scattered like frightened rabbits.
Cole glanced toward the third floor, a bit worried. He hoped that Paisley wouldn't be affected by all this. Just as he was thinking that, a strong wave of perfume hit his nose. He didn't even need to look to know who it was.
"Cole, why are you standing here like an idiot?" Keeley's voice rang out.
Speak of the devil. Cole quickly adjusted his expression and turned to Keeley. "Keeley, what brings you here?"
Keeley usually stayed with Josie in another building on the estate. 'What's she doing over at the main house?' thought Cole.
"Hi." Keeley lazily glanced upstairs. "That woman's here with her daughter?"
Cole immediately understood she meant Paisley and corrected her, "The eldest miss is here with her daughter."
Keeley let out a mocking laugh. "You guys call my sister-in-law Josie, but somehow, this junior gets to be 'eldest miss'? What kind of logic is that?"
Josie was Tyson's younger sister, which meant Paisley should be calling her 'aunt.'
Cole had no interest in arguing. "Is there something you need, Keeley?"
"Can't I come over for no reason?" Keeley's tone was arrogant. "I just wanted to see what's so special about this 'eldest miss' that she gets to be above my sister-in-law."
