Keeley had been waiting for Josie to take her side and make things difficult for Paisley, putting her in her place. But instead of what she had hoped for, Josie looked at Paisley with admiration and appreciation.
'Josie, you useless idiot, what the hell are you doing?' Keeley thought, and shot Paisley an annoyed glare, but then she froze.
No matter how much Keeley hated to admit it, Paisley was just a little bit prettier than her.
"Aunt." Paisley stood up and greeted Josie.
Serena followed right after, politely calling out, "Great-aunt."
Josie nodded at Serena. She didn't like kids. That was why she had chosen not to have any of her own and wasn't particularly fond of other people's children either.
Zim, standing behind Josie, pulled out a chair for her thoughtfully before taking his own seat.
Keeley sat beside Zim, but no one paid her any attention. Everyone's focus was on Paisley.
Then she noticed the bracelets on Paisley's wrist. She clearly remembered Josie had asked Anna for them multiple times, but Anna had never given them up. And yet, now, those very bracelets were on Paisley's wrist.
In fact, she had been the one who first saw Anna wearing them and had fallen in love with them. She had then pushed Josie to ask Anna for them.
Josie spoiled her, so she had asked several times. But Anna kept refusing, saying they were part of her dowry.
Josie hadn't cared much about the bracelets in the first place. After being turned down a few times, she simply gave up. Eventually, she had even forgotten about them entirely.
But now, seeing those bracelets on Paisley's wrist, Keeley felt as if Paisley had stolen something that rightfully belonged to her. She wanted nothing more than to rip them off Paisley's wrist and put them on her own.
Sensing an intense gaze, Paisley looked up and locked eyes with Keeley's jealous glare.
Keeley got distracted by Zim before she could think any further. She had no idea what Zim said to her, but whatever it was, she stopped looking at Paisley.
Paisley didn't pay Keeley any more attention either. She thought Keeley wasn't that important to begin with.
Before dinner ended, Anna said that recognizing Paisley as part of the Godard family was a huge event and called for a grand banquet. They decided to hold the event the day before Christmas Eve, which was the day after tomorrow.
After dinner, Anna kept them around for quite a while, chatting away. In the end, she only let Paisley and Serena leave when she saw Serena was too exhausted to stay up any longer.
Tyson was worried that Serena didn't have Lily to take care of her and that something like what happened that afternoon might happen again. So, he had Cole assign another Lily specifically to look after her.
Until Maria returned, this Lily would be responsible for taking care of Serena.
After putting Serena to sleep, Paisley found herself unable to fall asleep. She put on a coat and wandered around the mansion alone.
The mansion at night had a different charm from the daytime. The warm ground lights gave the place an almost ethereal beauty.
But Paisley hadn't walked for long before she ran into an unfamiliar face.
The woman stopped when she saw Paisley, and then asked in a low voice, "Who are you? Why are you wandering around here in the middle of the night?"
The woman was a full head taller than Paisley. She quickly walked up to Paisley, got a good look at her face, and then froze for a second before blurting out, "You're the girl Uncle just acknowledged, aren't you?"
The moment she heard that, combined with the woman's gender and tone, Paisley immediately knew who she was. She didn't even have to guess—this had to be Jolin, the Logan family's police officer cousin. And judging by her attitude, she was quite the tough one.
"My name is Paisley, your elder cousin." Paisley had dealt with all kinds of tough personalities before. Jake's men were full of them, so this was nothing new.
Facing Jolin, who was a head taller than her, Paisley didn't back down in the slightest.
Jolin scrunched up her nose. She sounded tired, and her attitude toward Paisley was far from friendly—if anything, it was outright arrogant.
Jolin had already heard about what happened that afternoon. She thought, 'This Paisley has barely arrived and is already causing trouble in the family. It's just a minor dispute between two kids, yet she has actually hit Florence. How brazen.'
Now that the year was coming to an end, everyone was busy, and Anna still insisted on throwing some grand recognition banquet for her.
Jolin didn't regard Paisley with respect. She didn't acknowledge her.
"Since you're back, behave yourself. Don't cause trouble. Isn't this family messy enough already?" Jolin was beyond sick of the women in this house.
Jolin was already drowning in cases every day. And yet, her own family couldn't give her a break either.
First, there was Keeley, who never stopped making trouble. She ran wild outside just because they family backed her up. Jolin had already cleaned up her messes several times.
Then there were Florence and Bella—one was a fool stuck in her ways, and the other was an absolute drama queen. Not a single one of them knew how to keep things peaceful. And now, here came Paisley and Serena, stirring up trouble the very first day.
At that moment, Jolin mentally categorized Paisley as another troublemaker like Keeley. Without giving Paisley a chance to explain, she turned and left, the chill in the air trailing behind her.
Paisley watched her retreating figure, her posture sharp and imposing. She thought, 'Well, she definitely looks like a cop.'
Just then, her phone rang—it was a call she hadn't received in a long time. She glanced at the screen. The number was from Montera. After a brief hesitation, she answered.
"Hello, is this Ms. Sutton?" asked the person on the other end.
Paisley said, "Yes, speaking."
The person on the other end sounded excited after confirming her identity. "Hello, I'm Elijah Wyatt from Montera's Central Precinct Criminal Investigation Division. There's a tricky case, and we need your help, Ms. Sutton."
