Max felt the same way as Tyson, but he was more rational and understanding of Paisley's stance. So, instead of showing his feelings, he reassured Serena. "Once I finish work, I'll take you and Mommy out to play. Wherever you want to go, we'll go. How about that?"
"Okay!" Serena's eyes sparkled beautifully.
From the very beginning, when Paisley first refused Serena's request, she had intended to explain that she had work to do today. But Max and Tyson, with their weak emotional endurance, had interrupted her.
So, Paisley got back on track. "I have work outside today, and I'll be taking you with me."
With that, any lingering disappointment in Serena's heart instantly vanished. Even though she couldn't visit the Grand Palace, just being able to go out with Mommy made her just as happy.
Serena's face lit up with a big, bright smile. "Great! I'll go out with Mommy!"
At the sight of Serena smiling so happily, Tyson's gloomy mood immediately lifted.
"You have work? What kind of work? Do you need me to arrange some people for you?" Max immediately focused on the key point.
Tyson suddenly realized. "Yeah, Paisy, do you have a job in Montera? You never mentioned it before."
If he had known Paisley was working in Montera, he would have made arrangements for her in advance.
Paisley replied, "It's just a temporary job—helping a friend with something small. No need to arrange anything, it's perfectly safe."
She thought, 'After all, what could be safer than being with a team of criminal investigators at the police precinct? Even the most reckless troublemakers wouldn't dare break the law in such a sacred and solemn place.'
"A friend?" This time, Tyson was the one being sharp. Like an overprotective father, he pressed further, "What friend? How long have you known them? Is it a man or a woman? Can you bring them over so I can meet them? I've never met any of your friends."
Paisley went speechless. Watching Tyson ramble on, she thought, 'Perhaps, this is called a sweet burden.'
Max was equally curious, but given his current position, he couldn't openly ask Paisley these questions. Luckily, Tyson was asking exactly what he wanted to know. So, he simply stared at Paisley, waiting for her answer.
Taking a sip of milk, Paisley explained, "My friend is with Montera's Central Precinct Criminal Investigation Division. They have a tricky case and need my help. They'll be picking me up soon. I'll be taking Rena with me, so there's no need to worry."
Hearing the person's job title and location, both men finally felt relieved. But in the next second, Tyson asked curiously, "Hey, what did the Criminal Investigation Unit want with you?"
With that, Tyson searched his mind for an answer. As far as he remembered, Paisley didn't have any work related to criminal investigations.
Max was also puzzled. He looked at Paisley with both curiosity and admiration.
"They probably want me to help with facial reconstruction. I have a student who works as a forensic artist at the police department," Paisley said calmly. To her, this was just another routine task.
Drawing had always been her strength. If she could use her talent to help others, she would love to. However, as soon as Paisley finished speaking, the large dining hall fell into complete silence.
None of the men present said a word; they all just stared at her. Even Cole passing by looked at her in disbelief.
For a moment, the only sounds in the room were the footsteps of the servants, the soft clinking of dishes, and Paisley sipping her milk.
"What's wrong with you guys? Why are you staring at me like that?" Paisley found it amusing but instinctively touched her face. "Is there something on my face?"
Finally, Leo couldn't hold back and blurted out, "Miss, you're fucking amazing!"
"Watch your mouth." Ocean smacked Leo on the back of the head. "There are kids here. You want to get your tongue cut off?"
Realizing his mistake, Leo knew he shouldn't have spoken like that in front of Serena. But he still refused to back down and shot back at Ocean. "Like you talk any better? You literally just said you'd cut my tongue off!"
Ocean got so annoyed that he smacked Leo on the head again.
Serena burst into laughter at the two bickering. She really loved being here.
"Paisy, you have this skill too?" Tyson asked in astonishment.
Being an outsider to the police force but still getting invited to help solve cases—that had to take some serious talent. In that moment, Tyson felt a surge of pride in his heart.
Back then, Edmond would brag about Bella just because she could recite a poem. At the time, Tyson didn't get it. It was just a poem. He didn't think that was really worth showing off.
But now, looking at Paisley, Tyson had the urge to show her off to the whole world.
Paisley hadn't expected such a big reaction from these men. To her, this was just something she did regularly.
"It's nothing, really. Just drawing," she said. Honestly, her skills weren't even as good as her late grandfather's. But her grandfather always told her that art required both talent and the accumulation of time and experience. Besides, it was just some personal experience.
So, Paisley never claimed to be a master artist or that her work was exceptional.
"That's not true, Miss Paisley. Don't underestimate yourself," Cole chimed in as he walked up to her. "There are plenty of people who can draw, but only a rare few can become forensic artists."
Paisley figured her ability to do this job probably had a lot to do with her unique upbringing.
"Of course. My daughter is one in a million," Tyson said proudly. Even the sharpness in his facial features seemed to soften with pride.
"Yeah, yeah! My mom is the best mom in the world!" Serena, the ultimate mom-hyping champion, jumped in right after her grandfather, blindly praising Paisley.
Max smiled as he listened, his gaze filled with warmth. Every now and then, he would chime in, but his eyes never left Paisley.
And just like that, breakfast turned into a session of non-stop praise for Paisley.
