Grayson shook his head. "I don't know either."
He honestly didn't know where his dad had gone. His dad was still here when he fell asleep last night. But now that he had been awake for so long, his dad still hadn't shown up.
"Hmm." Serena thought for a moment. "So, are you going back with the scary man later?"
Grayson, hearing Serena keep calling his dad the "scary man," couldn't help but correct her. "No, Rena, it's not the scary man. It's dad."
Serena tilted her head. "But isn't the scary man your dad?"
"No, no." Grayson shook his head, then explained to Serena slowly, "It's not scary man, it's dad. Our dad."
"Our dad?" Serena tilted her head the other way. Grayson's words shocked her, "But no, the scary man isn't my dad. I don't have a dad." Serena seriously explained to Grayson that she didn't have a dad.
"How can you not have a dad? Without a dad, how were you born?" Grayson was confused by Serena's explanation.
Serena pointed at her stomach. "I was born from mom's belly."
"I was born from mom's belly too." Grayson was almost in tears from Serena's confused look, then rubbed her head. "We both came from mom's belly, so we share the same dad. My dad is your dad."
"Huh?" Serena was completely confused. "But mom never told me."
She really should have a dad, because all the other kids at kindergarten had dads, and she didn't. She thought, 'But if the scary man is my dad, why didn't mom tell me?'
When Paisley came back, she found the two kids sitting on the bed, staring at each other. Serena looked even more confused and bewildered. When she saw Paisley return, she blurted out, "Mom, is the scary man my dad? My real dad?"
Paisley froze for a moment, then looked at Grayson. When Grayson met Paisley's gaze, he thought he had made a mistake. He nervously lowered his head, too afraid to look at Paisley.
"I shouldn't have told Rena about Dad," he thought. "Mom's definitely not going to be happy about it." He thought, since he knew Rena was his real sister, then Rena should also know.
Paisley took a deep breath, stepped forward, and simply admitted, "Yeah, it's true. Scary man is your real dad."
After all, this was something that couldn't be hidden forever. And ever since Serena's blood type was revealed, and the Vanderbilt family knew the truth, she had no intention of keeping it a secret anymore.
The reason she hadn't told Serena sooner was because of her surgery; she couldn't afford to have her emotions disturbed.
Paisley was worried that the truth would be too much for the child to handle, so she chose to keep it from her for a while. But now that Serena knew, there was no reason to hide it anymore.
Serena was stunned, her big eyes darting around as her little head processed what she had just heard. Thankfully, she didn't have the emotional outburst that Paisley had feared.
It seemed the child was stronger than Paisley had imagined. Just then, the maids entered, bringing the two kids their breakfast. They moved the table in front of the children and placed the steaming bowls in front of them.
"Wow! Mom!" Serena stared at the colorful pasta in her bowl, her eyes widening as her attention shifted.
"Rainbow pasta," Grayson said, staring at the pasta in his bowl, surprised. He hadn't had this in four years. Even though the chef at home had made it before, it didn't taste like Mom's. It was different.
Paisley had been unable to sleep the night before, her mind racing. Since she couldn't sleep anyway, she went to the kitchen and made some pasta herself. In addition to the two kids' bowls, she made one each for Tyson and Max as well.
Grayson couldn't wait for the maids to feed him. He quickly scooped some pasta onto his spoon, blew on it a few times, and ate it. After four long years, he was finally tasting it again. It was so good—Mom's was the best.
Serena was also eating happily. Paisley had made this Rainbow pasta for her a few times before. But with her work piling up, she hadn't made it much. Plus, with Maria taking care of things at home, Maria's pasta wasn't bad either.
After breakfast, Tyson and Max came to see the two kids. This was Tyson's first time meeting Grayson, and knowing that the child had grown up with his father, and also because Grayson looked almost exactly like Dominick, Tyson couldn't help but think of Dominick every time he saw him.
And thinking of Dominick brought back memories of his precious daughter's hardships at the Vanderbilt family. Naturally, there was no warmth in his expression.
Grayson sat there awkwardly, his head lowered, too shy to meet his grandfather's gaze. But he was still a child, and more importantly, he was his daughter's own son. Tyson might not have had the best expression, but he wasn't going to make things difficult for Grayson.
As lunchtime approached, Cole came in and reminded them that it was Christmas Eve, and no matter what, the family should have lunch together.
The reminder made Paisley realize that it was already Christmas Eve. When lunchtime came, as Paisley walked into the dining room, she was surprised to see someone unexpected. "Dominick?"
