Serena's words made Anna's forehead twitch, and Max's half-smiling look made her feel nervous. Knowing Max was someone who would go all out, Anna quickly explained, "Max, don't listen to Rena's nonsense. Paisy is my granddaughter; who would bully her? We were just chatting with her!"
Noticing that Max's gaze had landed on Dominick, Anna continued, "Dom is a guest I invited. After all, he's Paisy's biological father. Blood is thicker than water. It's not nice to leave him alone in the hotel during Christmas."
"And." Anna paused, as if speaking directly to Max. "The reason Dom brought Sonny to Montera for Christmas was to reunite with Paisy, wasn't it?"
Anna's words seemed to carry a thorn, and Max felt a sharp pain in his chest. Edmond then realized that Dominick wasn't invited by Tyson to intimidate him but by Anna herself. In an instant, Edmond understood Anna's intention.
He immediately smiled and said, "Mom, you really worry about the younger generation. Marriage is always best with the original partner. They know each other well, and, importantly, there are children involved. I know many people whose second marriages are chaotic. None of those second spouses ever treat the first partner's children with sincerity."
If Paisley remarried Dominick and returned to the family, she would effectively give up the Godard family's inheritance rights. Once that happens, everything would go back to its proper track.
Not only that, but the Godard family would also gain a new in-law with the Vanderbilt family of Harrowfell. Of course, this was the ideal scenario.
"Grandma really cares, but some people just don't appreciate it," Christopher added pointedly.
Anna showed a look of someone finally understanding her. She forced a smile and looked at Paisley. "Paisy, I've already checked. Dom hasn't made any serious mistakes, and he's genuinely sincere towards you. Don't be so stubborn. Give him another chance."
The table went quiet again, and all eyes turned to Paisley. At this point, Paisley was on the verge of fury.
Dominick, knowing Paisley well, could tell she was angry. He never expected things to escalate like this. His original intention was just to spend Christmas with Paisley and the kids. He hadn't expected it to turn into a forced marriage proposal by the Godard family elders.
"Grandma, when Paisy and I divorced, it was indeed my fault. I'm here today just to have a meal with everyone, no other intentions." Dominick made a public statement to put an end to the topic.
Anna wanted to make a point, but with Dominick's statement, she couldn't continue. Otherwise, it would just be unpleasant.
"Oh dear, look at me. I'm so happy Dom is here, I got carried away talking and the food is almost cold." Anna raised her glass and made a Christmas toast. With that, Christmas Eve dinner, which had taken a strange turn, officially began.
But at the table, no one seemed to have much of an appetite, and no one was talking. Serena, who had been hungry for a while, finally got to eat. She started directing Max, asking him to serve her some of this and that.
Dominick just watched his daughter and Max interacting intimately, almost like father and daughter. He gripped his fork tightly, anger bubbling inside him, sneering repeatedly.
Max finally piled Serena's bowl with all the dishes she liked, placing her back in her high chair and letting her eat slowly on her own. Only then did he notice that since the meal began, Paisley hadn't touched her fork much.
Paisley had no appetite. When someone is this angry, they can't eat much. Just then, a piece of fragrant meat was placed in her plate.
"Don't just sit there, filling your stomach is the most important thing." Max's gentle voice echoed in her ear.
Paisley paused, then turned to meet Max's deep eyes.
"She doesn't eat cilantro," Dominick's cold voice interrupted their interaction.
Max turned his gaze toward Dominick, the two men's eyes meeting, and sparks seemed to fly in the air.
"And, Paisy doesn't like red meat. She prefers fish." Dominick's voice was cold, but his eyes gleamed with a sense of victory.
This was something only he knew about Paisley's preferences. They had lived together for four years, and no one could replace those years.
The table went quiet again. The people who had been eating stopped in their tracks.
At that moment, Serena, who had been eating quietly, lifted her head and said in her sweet voice, "My mom eats cilantro! She loves it! And my mom doesn't like fish because it has bones."
Serena's words made Dominick's pupils contract, and he immediately looked at Paisley. And at this moment, Paisley took a bite of the meat with cilantro under his gaze.
She chewed it carefully, savoring the taste, and finally smiled gently at Max. "Hmm, it's really good."
"Good, eat more then," Max added, placing another dish of food in front of Paisley, but deliberately avoiding the fish.
Dominick, confused, was stunned inside. It was clear that Paisley used to dislike cilantro. And she rarely ate meat; fish was more likely to appear on the menu than red meat. But now, she was enjoying all these foods she used to hate.
But soon, Dominick had his answer. He didn't like cilantro. He preferred white meat over red meat. So, Paisley didn't dislike cilantro. She avoided it because he didn't like it. And she ate fish because he liked it.
'So that's how it was,' he thought. Dominick lowered his head and couldn't help but let out a wry smile. He had just confidently said she didn't like cilantro and preferred fish. He had been so pleased with himself. It was ridiculous.
Christmas Eve dinner should've been the happiest meal of the year, with the family gathered together. But this year's Christmas Eve dinner at the Godard family was one where no one could be happy. In the end, the dinner had to be hastily concluded.
"Tyson, come with me," Anna spoke, pulling Tyson aside as he was about to leave.
Tyson thought he had already made his stance clear and felt there was no need to discuss anything further with Anna. But Anna was insistent. He was curious about what else his mother had to say, so he followed her.
"Do you need me to help with anything?" Jolin glared at Dominick warily. The implied message was clear—she could help kick Dominick out.
"It's okay, go rest. You've been running around all day. Don't worry about my matters," Paisley politely turned down Jolin's offer.
Jolin didn't insist, taking Joshua and leaving. Joshua had originally wanted to challenge Paisley to a few rounds of chess, but in the end, he couldn't resist her older sister and was forcefully dragged away.
"You and Linna take the kids to rest. I need to talk to him alone," Paisley said, handing Serena and Grayson over to Max and Linna. She then turned to Dominick. "Come with me!"
