Paisley walked quickly ahead, ignoring the greetings from the servants along the way, only focusing on moving forward.
She wanted to leave, she wanted to escape. As for what she was escaping from, she wasn't even sure herself. She just felt suffocated, unbearably suffocated.
"Paisley! Listen to me! Paisley!" Dominick called from behind, quickly catching up with her.
The man's large hand easily grabbed Paisley's slender arm, turning her around to face him. Slap! Without warning, Paisley slapped Dominick across the face.
Dominick held his cheek, stunned for a moment, but didn't get angry. Instead, he calmly asked, "Did that make you feel better? If not, you can keep hitting me, until you're not angry anymore."
Paisley raised her hand in anger again, but just as it was about to strike, she felt empty. She dropped her hand, staring at Dominick without blinking. "Dominick, do you think this is fun?"
Dominick knew exactly what Paisley was angry about. He didn't want her to misunderstand him. "Paisley, believe me or not, I have no other intentions. I just wanted to have a meal with you and our children for Christmas, that's it."
"That's it?" Paisley scoffed, "Dominick, you saw what happened at the reunion yesterday. You know the attitude Anna and the second branch have toward me.
"You also know why she brought you here today, to pressure us to get back together. Don't tell me you don't know! If you don't know, then you, Mr. Vanderbilt, are pretty useless."
Dominick clenched his jaw, the side of his face still stinging from her slap. Of course, he knew. Anna had only invited him here to use him as a pawn.
From the moment he received the call from the Godard family's matriarch, he had understood her intentions. But he still came.
"I just wanted to see you and Rena. I miss you both so much, really." Dominick's eyes were sincere, with a slight redness at the corners, as if he wanted to lay his heart bare for Paisley to see.
Paisley pushed his hand away as it reached for her. "So, you knew Anna's plan, and you still came. You knew your arrival would put me in an awkward, pressured situation, and you still came. Can I understand that you wanted this?
"You want me to go back to being your Mrs. Vanderbilt, to be that housewife whose life revolves only around her husband and children. The one with no thoughts, no self, just blindly loving you like a useless fool?"
"Paisy!" Dominick shouted.
Paisley stepped back, feeling deeply disappointed in Dominick. "Dominick, I really thought you had changed, but you haven't. You're still the same as before, never caring about how I feel."
"I do care about you! It's because I care that I want to see you!" Dominick's emotions were triggered, and he ignored Paisley's resistance, gripping her arms tightly, forcing her to look at him.
"Paisley, can't you stop doing this to me? What do I have to do for you to notice me, to pay attention to me, to see me?"
"Why should I look at you? Why should I care about you?" Paisley's emotions flared, her eyes filled with anger. "How many times do I have to say this? We're over! It's completely over! We can't go back to the past!"
Dominick, ignoring Paisley's struggles, pulled her into a tight hug. "We can go back! We can! Paisy, please, don't treat me like this. I'll change, I swear. Tell me what to do, just tell me."
His face buried in Paisley's neck, warm tears streamed down his face, soaking her clothes. "Paisy, tell me what to do. It feels like everything I do is wrong, like everything I do just makes you angry. I don't know what to do. I just want you to love me."
Paisley couldn't break free, so she gave up struggling. Her chest heaved with frustration, trying to stay calm and communicate with Dominick. "Dominick, you're an adult, not a child. The world of adults doesn't work like that—crying and begging won't fix things. Let go of me."
"I won't." Dominick didn't budge, his voice low and hoarse, mixed with a sobbing tone.
"Dominick, you—" Paisley was interrupted.
"Miss! Miss!" Leo rushed in, seeing the two of them hugging, and froze in shock.
He thought, 'Oh my! What did I just see? Why are they hugging? Did they get back together? If they did, then Max's dream is shattered, right?'
Seeing Leo, Paisley realized the awkwardness of the situation, and with her toes curled in embarrassment, she tried to push Dominick away while asking Leo, "What's going on?"
Leo remembered why he was there. "Miss, you need to go check on Max! He can't get up."
Paisley then noticed that, without realizing it, it had started snowing. Max's leg condition hadn't flared up in a while, but it seems the cold weather had triggered it again.
"Dominick, let go of me." Concerned about Max's leg, Paisley pushed harder against Dominick.
Dominick still didn't move. "I won't let go. I won't let you go to him!"
He didn't believe that Max's leg condition had returned. He thought, 'Why does it have to flare up now, of all times, when I am alone with Paisley?'
"Let go!" Paisley tried again, aiming for his pressure points.
But this time, Dominick anticipated her move and controlled her hands, not giving her any space to act. With no other choice, Paisley, in desperation, bit down on Dominick's neck.
Dominick cried out in pain, instinctively letting go of Paisley. He held his neck, his eyes wide in rage. "Paisley, are you a dog?"
Paisley didn't bother to respond. She just turned and walked away. Dominick tried to stop her, but Leo and the others blocked his path.
"Paisley, use your brain! Max isn't sick. Don't let him fool you!" Dominick was furious. He didn't understand why Paisley couldn't see through Max's obvious scheme.
"Dominick, can you stop making a scene?" Paisley only glanced at him over her shoulder, then coldly instructed Leo, "Leo, arrange for someone to escort Mr. Vanderbilt back to the hotel."
"Yes!" Leo nodded, then called for more people, blocking Dominick's way, smiling as he said, "Mr. Vanderbilt, please go back."
Dominick gritted his teeth, looking at Leo, who was now treating him completely differently than he had when facing Paisley. He was so angry his face turned green.
He knew it—Max was pretending to be sick, just to steal Paisley away from him. And Paisley only believed Max, not him.
"Paisley!" he shouted.
