Grayson understood the look in Serena's eyes—it was the same look he once had when he looked at Marissa. "So, Rena, you like Max, don't you?"
"Yes!" Serena nodded without hesitation, emphasizing. "I really like Max. I wish he could be my dad."
Dominick never expected that one day, the boomerang would come back and hit him. This was what it felt like to have his own child not like him. This was what it felt like to hear those words.
This was what it felt like when Paisley had heard Grayson say he wished Marissa was his mom.
He hadn't spent much time with Rena. In fact, he hadn't even known about Rena for long. But even so, the feeling of being rejected and not acknowledged by the person you care about was almost tearing him apart.
Dominick turned around angrily. He really wanted to just storm in and tell Rena that he was her dad, that he was the only dad. But when he stood at the door, his hand on the doorknob, he couldn't bring himself to turn it.
His mind, his reason, and his emotions all told him that he was not like Paisley. He didn't have the same confidence as Paisley. He was the one at fault.
He could even imagine the consequences if he just charged in like that. If he did, Paisley and Rena would only pull further away from him.
So, Leo saw Dominick turn away in dejection.
"I'll leave first. Don't tell the kids I was here," Dominick said quietly. At that moment, he seemed to have lost all his strength, even his voice sounding weak.
The snow was getting heavier, falling like goose feathers, covering Dominick's body. It felt as though even the heavens were punishing him, making his already cold body freeze even more.
After seeing Dominick leave, Leo breathed a long sigh of relief. For a moment, he had really worried that Mr. Vanderbilt would charge in recklessly. If he scared the kids, that would have been his fault.
When the two figures finally left, Linna relaxed completely, lazily yawning, thinking, 'Hmph! What goes around comes around, you asshole! Serves you right!'
When Paisley arrived at Max's room with the needles, his forehead was already covered with fine beads of cold sweat. Seeing Paisley come in, his face showed a look of apology. "Sorry, it's such a busy time, and I'm making you work hard."
"What are you saying? We don't need to be polite between us," Paisley said casually, walking over to Max's bed and sitting down. Without any discomfort, she pulled up his long pants, exposing his scarred calf.
Max didn't say a word and just let Paisley touch him. His eyes were deep, his mind replaying Paisley's words from earlier. "We don't need to be polite between us."
The man's sensual lips curled into a pleasant smile, and his eyes relaxed in a way they hadn't before. In that moment, it seemed as though he forgot the pain.
"As long as you didn't delay talking to Dominick, that's good," Max said lightly, his eyes not missing any of the expressions on Paisley's face.
Thinking about that troublesome man, Dominick, Paisley frowned slightly. "No, it didn't delay anything. We cleared everything up."
As she spoke, Paisley had already inserted the needle into Max's leg. The familiar tingling sensation slowly spread from the point where the needle entered, easing the cold, swollen ache in Max's calf.
"Hmm, it's good to get everything clear," Max smiled and didn't continue the topic.
During the break between injections, Paisley looked up and saw the heavy snow outside. With that much snow, the roads were definitely going to pile up.
She looked at Max. "How did you spend the winters before?"
In Montera, a northern city, it always snowed in the winter, and sometimes, if the weather was bad, there were heavy snowstorms. The snow could pile up really high and took a long time to melt. She wondered how Max could get through such weather with his condition.
"Actually, it's not that hard to get through. Montera doesn't snow that often. Most of the time, aside from the cold, the dry, cold climate is actually good for my leg," he said.
Paisley knew Max was downplaying it, not wanting to worry her.
"And now, I have you by my side," Max said cheerfully. If not for the other leg, still trembling with pain from the un-injected needle, he didn't look like he was in any pain at all.
"Right." Paisley suddenly remembered something. "I keep forgetting to ask you, remember I said the medicine you were taking was too strong and suggested you change it? Did you switch to the one I recommended?"
That was back when they were in Harrowfell, the second time Paisley treated Max's leg. Leo had asked her to visit the villa next door. The moment she entered, she immediately smelled something off about Max's medicine.
The medicine was good, no problem with taking it, but for Max's condition at the time, it was too strong. If taken long-term, it would put a strain on his body. It wouldn't benefit his health, and could even backfire.
"Yes, I changed it the moment you said so." Max nodded.
Paisley still remembered the look on Max's face when she pointed out the problem with the medicine, that deep, helpless expression.
"So, who gave you that medicine in the first place?" she asked.
That time, Max was at his weakest, taking medicine every day, but never seeing any improvement. He had thought of many possible reasons, but never considered the medicine. Until Paisley pointed it out.
"It was Grandma," Max said, gazing deeply at Paisley.
"What?" Paisley immediately looked up, the shock so strong that she accidentally applied too much pressure and made Max's leg bleed. A thin stream of blood shot out, forming a perfect arc of red in front of Paisley and Max.
"Sorry! Sorry!" Paisley hurriedly tried to stop the bleeding, pressing her finger on the bleeding spot on Max's leg.
With her other hand, she frantically worked to stop the blood. This was definitely one of her rare failures in her medical career. If anyone found out, her apprentices would laugh themselves silly.
"It's fine," Max laughed at Paisley's frantic actions. It was the first time he'd seen her so flustered. It made her seem so much more lively.
Finally, after Paisley's efforts, the bleeding stopped. "This is so embarrassing," Paisley muttered, scratching her head in frustration.
She thought, if Grandpa were still alive and knew about this dumb mistake, he'd probably lock her up in the small black room on the mountain and keep her there until she couldn't see straight. Then, he'd probably give her a good spanking.
"Yes!" Serena nodded without hesitation, emphasizing. "I really like Max. I wish he could be my dad."
