"No, it's not embarrassing. It's cute," Max smiled indulgently, clearly not bothered by the little blood loss. If a little bloodletting could make Paisley look this cute and lively, he wouldn't mind doing it a few more times.
Paisley pouted, not saying anything. She looked just like Serena when Serena pouted and didn't speak.
The leg that had just bled couldn't be needled anymore. Paisley had no choice but to temporarily put that leg aside and move on to the other one.
After a brief moment of lightheartedness, the vibe became tense again. "So, you're saying that the harmful medicine was prescribed by Grandma?"
Max nodded, a hint of sadness crossing his eyes. Good times really were short-lived.
"To be precise, it was the doctor Grandma introduced to me." Max clarified.
Since the doctor was introduced by Anna and had a high reputation in the field, Max never suspected anything was wrong with the medicine. It wasn't until this moment that Paisley truly understood the deep, helpless expression Max had when she pointed out the problem.
"Does Dad know about this?" Paisley asked.
Max shook his head. "No, I didn't tell him. There was no need to."
Paisley nodded. She could understand why Max hadn't told Tyson.
First, the medicine was prescribed by a legitimate doctor and had nothing to do with Anna, who only introduced him to the doctor. Second, the medicine itself was harmless; it was a beneficial drug, though a bit too strong.
Combining the two factors, it could be said that the doctor's skills were lacking, but there was no direct fault on Anna's part. From any angle, this was simply Anna's care for Max, as his elder.
Max had no proof that Anna meant to harm him, and deep down, he didn't want to believe she would. So, for both personal and professional reasons, he couldn't tell Tyson.
Thankfully, he had switched the medicine privately based on Paisley's prescription, and although his body was still weaker than before, it wasn't as frail as it had been.
Meanwhile, at Anna's place, the mother and son had erupted into a fierce argument once again.
"Tyson, stop looking at me like that. You know what I want to say." By now, Anna wasn't hiding anything. "This family cannot be left to Paisy."
"Why not? Paisy is my daughter. Why can't I make her the heir?" asked Tyson
Anna's response was a simple one. "Because she's a woman."
"What does being a woman have to do with it? Mom, aren't you a woman?" Tyson didn't understand. He couldn't believe those words were coming from his mother.
He had never known that his mother was also someone who valued men over women. She had always doted on Josie more than anyone else in the family.
"I'm a woman, but I don't run this family! Throughout history, it's always been the men who lead the household. Women just need to take care of the family!" Anna slammed the table in frustration, complaining about Paisley in front of Tyson.
"Paisy had a great ex-husband like Dominick, and he even humbled himself to reconcile with her. What more does she want? Can there be any man better than Dominick? If they remarry, it will benefit the Vanderbilt family, and that benefits us, the Godard family, doesn't it?"
"Hmph! Whose benefit are we talking about? That useless Christopher's?" Tyson bluntly exposed what his mother was thinking.
"Mom, you've always said that it's bad to air our dirty laundry! You said for the family's honor, don't let me tear things apart with the second branch. I really thought you were doing it for our family, for Godard Group, for the Godard family!"
"Isn't that what I'm doing? Isn't it for the family?" said Anna.
"Then do you think Christopher, that useless man, can carry this family? What does he have over my daughter?" asked Tyson.
"Just because he's a man, that alone makes him better than your daughter!" Anna said with conviction, her words full of determination.
Tyson couldn't help but laugh out of anger. "Mom, women already have it hard enough. They struggle to survive in a patriarchal world, and yet they have to deal with someone like you—who pretends to care but is actually a snake in the grass."
"You! How dare you?" Anna, furious, clutched her chest, trying to calm her heart. She yelled at Tyson, "I'm doing this for the family! Have you seen any major family where the woman leads?"
"So what? I am going to break that tradition. What's wrong with that?" Tyson looked at his mother, as if seeing a stranger. "Mom, does Josie know about your thoughts?"
"What did you say?" Anna asked.
"If Josie knows that her proud mother actually looks down on women, what do you think she'll think?" said Tyson.
