Paisley, still in the middle of preparing the tea, paused, looking at Josie in confusion. Josie didn't hide her emotions, recounting to Paisley what she had just heard from Anna.
"My brother really cares about you. He's willing to lift you up to that position. He doesn't care about your gender, your abilities—only about what you want. As long as you want it, he'll give it to you." Josie's eyes reddened as she spoke, filled with a sorrow.
"I've only just realized that I've been nothing but a pampered flower in my parents' hands. They've never relied on me. Just because of my gender, they excluded me from the line of heirs.
"They agreed to let me marry someone lower than me, but it was just so I could stay close to them, keeping them happy.
"And all along, I thought it was their immense love for me. I even took pride in it. Look, I'm the most precious daughter of the Godard family, no need for a family alliance, free to choose my lover, and my parents love me so much!"
Paisley didn't say anything, just listened quietly to Josie's words. After enduring a huge shock, she needed an outlet.
"Paisy, do you know what makes me the angriest?" she asked.
"What really angers me is not my parents' false affection, which appeared to be love but was really just gender bias. What really makes me angry is that I've wasted almost forty years!
"How many forty years do I have left? I'm forty now, and I just realized that my parents have only treated me like a doll. And I willingly played the role of their doll for forty years!"
Paisley silently poured out the cold tea from Josie's cup and immediately refilled it with hot tea.
"Josie, you're only forty, you're not even halfway through life yet, so why are you so anxious?" Paisley's tone was light and slow, without much emotional emphasis, but somehow it provided Josie with a strange comfort.
Yes, she was only forty, and she had already reached a starting point that many people would never achieve in their lifetime. Anyone, at any time, could start over, and so could she.
"I understand now, Paisy. Thank you," Josie said, as if making a decision, her eyes now burning with determination as she looked at Paisley.
Paisley was taken aback, thinking, 'Did I even say anything that significant? How is it that in just a short time, Josie seems as if she's been revived with newfound energy?'
"I apologize for what happened with Keeley before. It was my narrow-mindedness, I'm sorry." Josie stood up, no longer carrying herself like an elder, but instead, she directly bowed 90 degrees to Paisley.
"You don't need to do this." Paisley quickly stood up to help her. She took the opportunity to check Josie's pulse.
"Hmm?" Josie immediately noticed Paisley's action and looked at her curiously. "Paisy, you understand this?"
"Hmm, I know a little," Paisley responded indifferently, but her gaze became more serious.
Seeing Paisley's expression, Josie dared not speak, holding her breath as she stood still, letting Paisley check her body. Time passed slowly, and after a while, Paisley finally let go of Josie.
"Paisy, your expression is a little scary. I don't have some terminal illness, do I?" Josie nervously grabbed her wrist. She had heard of powerful old doctors who could diagnose fatal diseases just by feeling a pulse.
"No, you don't have any terminal illness," Paisley replied, but the deep creases on her forehead didn't relax.
Looking at Paisley, Josie kept her breath held. "Paisy, that expression of yours doesn't exactly reassure me."
Paisley realized her expression was too serious and quickly relaxed her brows, smiling as she asked, "Have you been feeling unusually tired upon waking up, or lacking appetite lately?"
"Yes." Josie nodded, relieved. "I often stay up late, so I sleep more to catch up, and naturally, I don't have much of an appetite. I know my lifestyle isn't healthy, and I'll change it."
Paisley shook her head. "You didn't understand my question. I'm asking, do you find it hard to wake up once you fall asleep? Even if you wake up, do you feel disoriented, with your mind foggy, needing a while to clear up?"
Josie thought for a moment and nodded again, her expression turning serious. "Now that you mention it, that's exactly what happens. No matter how much I sleep, I just can't get enough rest. Once I'm asleep, it's like nothing can wake me up.
"Even when there's thunder or fireworks outside, it doesn't affect me. Is that bad? Isn't it just good sleep quality?"
That's what Zim said. He said it's a sign of good sleep quality, showing that her body and mind are still young.
Paisley didn't directly answer Josie's question but instead asked another, "Have you eaten anything special recently?"
Josie immediately shook her head. "No, I've been eating normally, nothing special. I rarely get sick, I don't even take medicine."
Seeing Paisley lost in thought, Josie's previously relieved feeling returned. "What's going on? Just tell me, is there something wrong with my body?"
Paisley thought for a moment but decided not to tell Josie the truth just yet. "It's nothing serious, you just need to change your routine, you can't keep going like this. Also, pay more attention to your diet and avoid eating things you shouldn't."
"Oh, I understand," Josie nodded. She was convinced that her health was just fine.
Paisy was just overreacting. She had heard from Anna that Paisy probably knew a bit about medicine.
But now it seemed that Paisy wasn't all that skilled in medicine. Otherwise, she wouldn't have taken so long to look at a small issue.
"By the way, do you have a habit of drinking red wine or milk before bed?" Paisley thought for a moment and asked.
"Yes, how did you know?" Josie's face lit up with a sweet smile as she remembered. "Your uncle always makes me a cup of hot milk every night. Sometimes when he's busy, he asks Keeley to—"
Josie stopped herself, worried that mentioning Keeley might upset Paisley.
"Hmm, right now your spleen and stomach are weak, and there's excess dampness in your body. If you keep drinking milk, it'll weaken your body's warmth and increase the dampness. So, for now, you should stop drinking milk," Paisley advised seriously.
Josie nodded, though she seemed to only partially understand. "Okay, I got it."
Paisley glanced at the time, realizing it was almost time to remove the needles from Max, so she didn't keep Josie any longer. She only hoped Josie would listen to her advice and stop drinking milk.
From her initial examination, Paisley had a strong suspicion that Josie had been on a mental health medication for a long time. It might not be noticeable in the short term, but over time, the toxins would damage her brain beyond repair.
