"What? Paisy, you can't be serious, right? You mean, your grandma poisoned Max?" In the study, Tyson's face turned pale after hearing what Paisley had just said.
He felt as though he had been submerged in a cold pond, his whole body icy from the inside out. At first, he didn't want to believe it. He didn't believe his mother could be so ruthless.
Even though she favored sons over daughters, and her thoughts were old and outdated, she had watched Max grow up, listened to him call her grandmother for so many years.
Normally, when she saw a stray kitten or puppy, she'd be heartbroken and shed tears. Such a kind and gentle-looking old lady couldn't do something like poisoning someone.
And it wasn't just any poison—it was a slow-acting one, using Max's trust in him to slowly work her plan. If it hadn't been for Paisley's medical skills and her ability to detect the problem, it could have continued. Over time, Max's body would have grown weaker.
"Why didn't you tell me about this earlier?" Tyson glared at Max, his eyes full of reproach.
Although Max was his adopted son, Tyson had truly raised him as his own. If he couldn't find Paisley, then Max would be his only child for the rest of his life.
"I didn't want to make you worry," Max said softly, as if the one who had almost been killed by Anna wasn't him.
"No!" Tyson couldn't take it anymore. He had already denied Paisley's right to inherit because she was a girl. Now he learned that Anna had already made a move against Max. One thing after another—Tyson couldn't accept this.
"I'm going to find that old lady and get the truth!" At this point, he didn't even call her "Mom" anymore.
"Dad! Wait!" Max stopped Tyson, trying to calm him down. "Please, calm down."
"My two children are being rejected by this family, even my grandchildren have been harmed! How can I stand by and do nothing?" said Tyson.
Even he, himself, had nearly died in Brightmoor. He had endured it for so long and didn't want to endure any more.
"Dad, as much as we don't want to endure, it's best to hold back a little longer." Compared to the furious Tyson and the urgent Max, Paisley was much calmer. "We still haven't found the real culprit who poisoned you, right?"
Tyson had intended to tell Paisley that she didn't need to be afraid, that he would make things right this time. But hearing Paisley say that, he immediately quieted down, his rationality gradually returning.
"Dad, calm down, please sit, and let Paisy speak." Max quickly helped Tyson sit down.
Tyson had been in charge for many years, so he was skilled at hiding his emotions.
Just like when he was in Brightmoor—when he thought he was going to die, he didn't change his expression, unafraid. It was just a regret that he hadn't been able to see his daughter before dying.
But now it was different. Now, it involved his children—both of them. Fortunately, Paisley's calmness brought back his reason. After sitting down, Tyson closed his eyes and quickly adjusted his emotions.
Once calm, he spoke again, "Paisy, please continue."
Paisley observed Tyson, seeing that he had truly calmed down, then continued, "Actually, being the heir doesn't mean that much to me. Like I said at the recognition banquet, the Godard family doesn't matter to me. I can disown it."
Hearing this, Tyson's face changed dramatically, and the emotions he had just managed to calm down surged again. His eyes were filled with sadness, like an old man abandoned by his children, looking at Paisley with pain.
"Paisy, I'm sorry. It's my fault I didn't protect you, I didn't keep my promise to you," he said.
He had promised Paisley that he would give her everything the world had to offer. From now on, she would be the young lady of the Godard family, and no one would be allowed to bully her.
But it was just after Christmas, and Paisley had barely returned to the Godard family when trouble started piling up. In the end, it all came down to Tyson trusting the people in this family too much.
It was like he never knew that Anna, who appeared kind on the outside, was actually a person with outdated views, ruthless and cold-hearted.
In the past, all his tolerance and patience toward the family members were built on his respect for his mother, Anna. But now, only now, he was seeing the true face of the woman he had respected for so long.
"Paisy, don't worry. I've seen it clearly now. I won't listen to her anymore. I won't keep enduring and stepping back," said Tyson.
"Dad, you misunderstood," Paisley quickly explained as Tyson's emotions started to rise again. "I don't care about the entire Godard family or the Godard Group. Here, I only care about you and my brother."
'Paisy cares about me!' Max thought. His usually calm eyes suddenly narrowed, his gaze intensely fixed on Paisley.
"Paisy." The sudden joy almost brought Tyson to tears. His precious daughter cared only about him, cared most about him. Obviously, he conveniently ignored the fact that she had said "brother" at the end.
"So, whether or not I become the heir, I really don't care. I brought up taking over the branch from Christopher and stripping Edmond of his authority at the family recognition banquet.
"The reason was to give everyone the wrong impression that I am officially entering the race for the heir position. And I'm confident I'll sit in that seat in the end."
"So, the acquisition of Victory Group, making you a shareholder of Godard Group, was also for this purpose?" Tyson asked.
"Exactly." Paisley nodded. "Sorry, Dad, I didn't discuss the Victory Group acquisition with you in advance. I just decided it on my own."
"What's there to apologize for? As long as you want it, everything in the Godard family will be yours sooner or later," Tyson said this without a hint of concern that Max might get jealous or have any negative thoughts.
If Max were that kind of person, he wouldn't have gone all out to help him find his biological daughter in the first place. After all, Max was the son Tyson personally chose; he knew well enough what kind of person he was.
"I own shares in Godard Group, I'm your biological daughter, and I have my brother's support. Even if Anna opposes me, if I want it, I can easily take the highest position. Even if the Godard family's relatives are unhappy because I'm a woman, in the face of true interests, they will most likely give way.
"After all, they're businessmen, and businessmen value profit. Clearly, I'm the one who can maximize their interests. So, Anna's opposition really doesn't have any practical effect," said Paisley.
Paisley's eyes were calm, not caring at all about Anna's patriarchal remarks.
"I've already built up momentum. Now I just need to see who can't hold their ground. Who's the blade, and who's the one wielding it? We'll find out soon enough." What Paisley didn't say was that in her heart, she already had someone in mind.
"No! No way!" After hearing everything, Tyson and Max immediately understood Paisley's plan. It seemed that this girl was using herself as bait to draw out the real culprit who poisoned Tyson.
"It's too dangerous, you can't do that!" Tyson's expression turned serious. "We need to take more time to think about this."
Max stared deeply at Paisley. "You've thought this through before coming to Montera, haven't you?"
If that wasn't the case, Paisley wouldn't have acquired Victory Group, which was one of the shareholders of Godard Group, in advance. Acquiring a company wasn't a simple task—it couldn't have been done in a short time.
"Yes." Paisley nodded. "Don't worry. Since I've made this decision, I've prepared everything thoroughly. Otherwise, I wouldn't have brought Rena with me."
She was a mother, and no matter how bold she was, she wouldn't put her child in danger. The only thing she hadn't expected was that Dominick would bring Grayson along.
That man always did things that caught her off guard. Because of Dominick's unannounced arrival, Paisley's plans were disrupted.
She had originally planned to wait until after Christmas to gradually implement her plan. By then, Linna and Jake's people would be able to come to Montera as well.
Fortunately, the issues on Jake's side were resolved quickly, and Linna arrived just in time. Just thinking about how Dominick nearly ruined her plans, and how the two kids got hurt because of it, made Paisley seethe with anger.
Yes, although Paisley did punish Keeley and Tommy, If Dominick hadn't been the trigger, Keeley wouldn't have brought that child named Tommy over. Then the family recognition banquet wouldn't have happened.
'Damn Dominick. So frustrating!' Paisley thought.
