From the second day of Christmas, as more people came to visit for Christmas, the Godard family mansion started to become lively again.
Anna's face had regained its smile, and Edmond had returned to being the polite, graceful man he once was. Zim spent every day with Josie, accommodating her every need.
Aside from Keeley no longer being there and Grayson now present, everything at home seemed unchanged, as if the unpleasant events had never happened.
But only Paisley knew that, while Zim spent his time with Josie, he was constantly watching her every move, like a snake hiding in the shadows. Edmond and Christopher were secretly already making their moves though outwardly calm.
On the way to Anna's place, Linna was about to speak when she saw Jolin walking over quickly.
"What's going on?" Paisley asked.
"Oh, sis, Linna," Jolin said as she walked, "There's a big case, I have to rush over."
"Alright, go ahead, be careful. If you need my help, just let me know," Paisley said, watching Jolin leave.
"Don't worry. I won't hesitate," Jolin smiled and waved, muttering, "I don't know what's been happening lately, but one case after another. Even during Christmas, no one can have peace."
Jolin mumbled as she walked away. She didn't mean much by it, but Paisley paid close attention.
She looked at Linna, noticing that Linna was also looking at her. "Teacher, I was about to tell you. I've been on the dark web these last few days and noticed something."
Linna, being cautious, waited until she was sure no one else was around, then said to Paisley, "The same IP address logged into the dark web twice in one day. That means, apart from me, someone in this house is also connected to the hired forces."
Linna worked with Jake in security, so understanding the gray and black zones was part of their job. Linna accessed the dark web for work, but as for that other party, the purpose was clear.
"Tell Jake to get ready," Paisley said softly, but her words carried a heavy weight.
"Yes! Understood!" Linna, visibly excited, felt her adrenaline spike.
"Tomorrow, take the two kids to Dominick," said Paisley.
If Dominick hadn't shown up, Paisley was going to find an excuse to have Linna take Serena away.
But her original plan was to start after the holiday, then she could use the reason of kindergarten starting to have Linna take Serena back to Harrowfell.
But now the plan had changed, everything had been moved up, and instead of one child, there were now two with her. Paisley thought it through, and the safest move would be to send both children to Dominick's side.
Although this wasn't Dominick's main territory, his social status was enough to offer protection. Even if someone with ill intentions dared to act, it wouldn't be wise to get Dominick involved.
First, it would complicate things; second, it would raise suspicions. Finally, if their scheming succeeded, with the right moves, Dominick could even become an ally in the future.
So, from every angle, Dominick's place seemed to be the safest option. Sending the two children there would surely be safe as well.
But just to be cautious, Paisley decided to have Linna follow, and she'd also arrange for a few more people to assist Linna.
"Huh?" When Linna heard she was assigned to the children's table, her face showed disappointment. "Teacher, if I'm not here, what if something happens to you?"
"Isn't Jake here?" Jake was still in the shadows; it wasn't yet time for him to make an appearance. After all, Edmond had seen Jake during their time in Brightmoor.
But to this day, Edmond still didn't know that Jake was actually Paisley's person. He still naively believed that Max had somehow used his influence to contact the local mafia.
Even though Linna was very reluctant, she knew this was the safest arrangement. Only by ensuring the children's safety could she allow her teacher to fully focus without worries. And her teacher's most trusted person was her.
For a moment, Linna felt a great sense of responsibility. "Okay, I understand. I'll make sure nothing happens to the children."
While they were talking, Anna's residence was just up ahead. At that moment, Anna had guests in her room, and it sounded like they were having a great time, laughing so loudly that even from far away, you could hear them.
"I tell you, you really get more shameless as you get older," Anna teased the woman sitting beside her.
The woman wasn't anyone else; she was Anna's sister-in-law, Gloria, the wife of the late second brother of the Godard family's late patriarch.
The two women had always had a good relationship. The second brother of the late patriarch had passed away early, and Anna had often taken care of Gloria, so they had grown to be like sisters.
During holidays, Gloria would always come over to wish Anna well.
"What's the big deal? I've been a widow for so many years, and I've raised those kids. Now, I can do whatever I want. No one can control me," Gloria said with a smile, her personality clearly straightforward.
As they were talking, Anna noticed the brooch Gloria was wearing. "You've started wearing these things too?"
Gloria smiled, "When I saw you wearing that brooch at the recognition banquet, I thought it looked nice, so I got one for myself. Ah, I'm not as lucky as you to have a good granddaughter who gave it to you. I had to buy mine myself."
Everyone knew that the brooch Anna wore at the recognition banquet was a gift from Paisley. At the time, Anna had told everyone she met that the brooch was from Paisley, trying to get closer to her.
But at that same recognition banquet, Paisley had refused to listen to Anna's pleading and insisted on confronting the second branch of the family. That was widely known too. As Anna's sister-in-law, Gloria naturally knew about it too.
"You've learned to mock me now, huh?" Anna's face darkened, and her smile disappeared.
"Oh no, you misunderstood me!" Gloria quickly explained. "What's our relationship? If something happens, I'll always stand by you. How could I mock you? I really think Paisy is a good child. You don't know, but the brooch you're wearing, it's got a big story behind it."
"A story?" Anna didn't take it seriously. "It's just a brooch, what could be special about it?"
No matter how valuable the brooch was, it didn't matter to her. She wore it at first just to make Paisley happy. But in the end, Paisley had really disappointed her. So if something bad happened later, she couldn't blame Paisley. Everything that happened was Paisley's own fault.
"It has a huge history!" Gloria's expression became serious, her cloudy eyes sparkling. "When I bought my brooch, I wanted to get one like yours, but I couldn't find it. Later, I found out that your brooch was the most beloved personal item of Queen Alexandra from ancient times.
"Do you know Queen Alexandra? She gave the brooch to her daughter. The princess, who had been sick and near death, supposedly recovered miraculously after wearing this brooch. Over time, the brooch was passed down through the generations of the princess's descendants, with each generation enjoying health and longevity.
"If the descendants hadn't been so short on money, they would never have sold it. And just like that, this brooch, because of its special meaning, was sold for 200 million!"
"200 million!" Anna was shocked.
The brooch was indeed valuable, made with top-quality materials. But it certainly wasn't worth 200 million, based on its real value, it could at most be worth 5 million. Yet now, she was being told it had sold for 200 million.
"Are you sure?" Anna couldn't believe it. She couldn't believe that Paisley, who was all about benefits, would spend six billion on a brooch that wasn't even worth that much.
"How could I be wrong? I couldn't believe it either, I double-checked!" Gloria's face was full of envy. That's why I say, Paisy is really good to you. The 200 million she spent on that brooch wasn't just for the brooch itself, but for the meaning behind it. She wants you to live a long, healthy life."
Gloria's words stunned Anna. She felt like there was something blocking her chest, and she couldn't tell what kind of feeling it was. A certain thought in her mind wavered at that moment.
