When Paisley arrived at Anna's place, she happened to bump into Gloria who had just finished talking to Anna and was about to leave.
"Gloria." Paisley greeted politely.
Gloria smiled broadly when she saw Paisley, her wrinkled face lighting up with an obviously flattering expression. "Paisy, you're here!"
"Yes, Grandma asked me to come," Paisley replied.
Gloria nodded and walked toward Paisley. As she passed by Paisley, she lowered her voice and said, "I've said everything you asked me to say to your grandmother. I think she's heard me."
"Thank you, Gloria." Paisley slightly nodded, acknowledging the favor.
Gloria smiled, her dry hands gently patting Paisley's shoulder. "Paisy, don't be so formal with me. In the future, my family will be relying on you."
"Don't worry, taking care of my younger siblings is my responsibility," Paisley promised.
Hearing what she wanted to hear, Gloria smiled even brighter. "Good, good. Go on in now, I'm heading back."
After parting ways with Gloria, Paisley had Linna wait outside while she went inside to see Anna.
In the living room, Anna was sitting on the sofa, rubbing the brooch Paisley had given her. Her expression was serious, and her black pupils, now slightly cloudy, were moving around in their sockets as if deep in thought.
"Ma'am, Paisley has arrived," the short caretaker came in and spoke, interrupting Anna's thoughts.
"Hmm? Paisy is here already?" Anna paused for a moment, then smiled warmly. "Let her in!"
When Paisley entered, she was greeted with the same kindly smile on Anna's face, just like when she first met her at the Godard family.
"You all are something else. When Paisy comes, just let her in directly. She's my granddaughter, not an outsider," Anna scolded the two caretakers around her with a stern face, then waved to Paisley with a bright smile. "Paisy, come here, come sit with me."
This version of Anna really made Paisley feel like she was truly liked by her. Paisley obediently walked over to Anna, her eyes immediately landing on the brooch Anna was holding and repeatedly rubbing.
Noticing Paisley's gaze, Anna looked down at the brooch in her hands and then grabbed Paisley's hand. "Why didn't you say anything about such a precious gift for me?"
If Gloria hadn't told her about the brooch's background today, she would have thought it was just an ordinary jade brooch.
It was valuable, but not particularly rare. But she didn't know that this brooch had such a significant history and such a beautiful meaning behind it.
"As long as you like it, that's the true value of the brooch," Paisley responded politely, facing Anna's warm enthusiasm.
The two of them exchanged pleasantries, and the room filled with a warm, peaceful vibe, like time was flowing gently by. No matter how you looked at it, it was just like any other grandparent-grandchild interaction.
After chatting about various things, Anna finally couldn't hold back and changed the topic. "Paisy, I had a dream last night, I dreamt about your grandfather."
"What we think about during the day, we dream about at night. You must be missing Grandpa." Paisley followed along with Anna's words.
Anna had expected Paisley to be curious about the details of the dream, but Paisley didn't seem to be.
She froze for a moment, then continued awkwardly, "It was like this, I dreamt that your grandfather was very angry, saying that you, as his eldest granddaughter, had returned to the family for so long but never even visited him once."
"Huh?" Paisley had a feeling she knew what Anna was trying to do but still played dumb. "Grandpa has passed away for so long, how can I go see him?"
Anna felt a pang in her heart. If it weren't for her purpose, she would have almost lost her temper. She wondered if Paisley was joking or if she truly didn't understand.
Anna cleared her throat, pretending to adjust her mood, then continued with a fake frown, "You child, stop joking around. How could you go see him? Of course, you visit his grave."
Anna gently patted Paisley's hand, speaking seriously, "Tomorrow, you should go see Grandpa and talk to him properly."
"Am I going alone? Or should everyone go together?" Paisley looked at Anna, her gaze deepening.
"There will be more visitors coming to pay their respects these days, so we can't leave the house empty. Plus, Grandpa has seen all of us, except for you.
"If you're too scared to go, just have Max go with you. It's a good opportunity for the two of you to talk on the way." Anna smoothly suggested that Max accompany Paisley.
This time, Paisley didn't immediately respond. Instead, she looked at Anna intently.
Anna felt uneasy under Paisley's gaze, her heart starting to race. "Paisy, why are you looking at me like that? Don't you want to go? Actually, I'm not forcing you.
"It's just that I dreamt Grandpa wanted to see you. I'm worried that if you don't go, he'll keep coming to me in my dreams and I can't handle it."
As if worried that Paisley wouldn't go, Anna added more pressure. "Paisy, I know you're a good child. I know there have been things I've done wrong. But I'm old, and I really can't stand Grandpa coming to me in my dreams all the time.
"Please, for my sake, go see him and have a good talk with him. Can you do that for me?"
"Grandma, are you sure you want me to go?" Paisley thought, this was Anna's last chance.
Paisley's gaze made Anna feel uneasy, and her answer only made her more anxious. She thought, 'Does that girl already know something? No, that's impossible, right?'
Anna steadied herself and smiled at Paisley, "Go ahead, I hope you'll go, just for me."
Paisley's breath hitched for a moment, then she sighed deeply. "Okay, I understand. I'll go tomorrow."
"Hmm, yes!" After getting the answer she wanted, Anna's expression relaxed. "Remember to have Max go with you. I won't feel at ease if you go alone. Don't bring the kids. It's too cold; don't let them catch a cold. Just the two of you adults should go."
"Sonny and Rena will be sent to their dad's tomorrow," said Paisley.
If Anna had been paying attention, she would've noticed that Paisley's smile had faded and no longer reached her eyes.
Hearing that the two kids would be sent to Dominick's, Anna was stunned for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, let them accompany their father during Christmas."
"Grandma, if there's nothing else, I'll head back now. I still need to prepare for tomorrow," Paisley said as she stood up.
"Alright, go ahead." Anna didn't try to keep her any longer and watched Paisley leave.
As Paisley reached the door, she paused for a moment, turned around, and looked at Anna for one last time.
'What a kind and benevolent old lady!' she thought. If it were possible, Paisley really didn't want to make things too hard. That's why she had asked Gloria to come and explain the meaning and history of the brooch to Anna.
At the same time, that was her final chance. If Anna didn't take that step, no matter what happened afterward, Paisley would still wholeheartedly accept her as a grandmother. But unfortunately, once again, the outcome disappointed Paisley.
"Paisley, do you have something else to say?" Seeing Paisley lingering at the door, Anna patiently asked.
Paisley shook her head. "Grandma, goodbye."
It was only after watching Paisley leave that the smile on Anna's face disappeared in an instant. Her dry hands tightly clenched the brooch.
She thought to herself, 'Paisley, don't blame me. I'm doing this for the whole Godard family. If you must blame someone, blame yourself for being born the wrong gender.'
