"Paisy is dead?" This news hit Josie like a bolt from the blue, completely shattering her.
Keeley watched as Josie's face lost all vitality, wrinkling her nose in disdain, then remembering why she had come to see Zim. "Go take care of those people downstairs, they're not listening to me!"
Now that she was back, she, Keeley, was the young lady of this house. From now on, this would no longer be the Godard family, but the Pelosi family!
It wasn't until Keeley reminded him that Zim remembered the important task for the day.
"Things aren't finished yet, don't act rashly," Zim warned.
He knew his sister too well. Over the years, she had been spoiled by Josie, and her temper had become unbearable. This was a critical time, and he couldn't let his guard down until the very end.
"Let's go. We'll head downstairs first." Zim put an arm around Sandy and glanced back at Josie. He then told the two strong men, "Take her along."
Josie was practically carried like a lifeless dog, hauled by the two men to the second floor of Rainfall Retreat. At this point, Zim's aunt, Mary, and Mary's second husband, Sandy's biological father, were sitting there like the hosts.
Tommy, wearing shoes, was running and jumping back and forth on the expensive sofa. This kind of behavior was previously forbidden by Josie. But now, he was acting as if he were at his own home, running wild on it.
When he saw Josie being carried in all bound up, all the old grudges resurfaced, and Tommy immediately jumped off the sofa and ran toward Josie.
He spat a mouthful of sour saliva directly onto Josie's face. "Stinky woman! Let's see what you'll say now! Daddy said, from now on, this is my home, and I can go anywhere I want! I'm going to smash all your stuff!"
At this point, Tommy stopped pretending and directly called Zim "Daddy."
This was because Josie never liked Tommy, and there was no way she would allow Tommy to come to the mansion unless something important happened. Even if Tommy came, Josie didn't allow him to wander freely.
Before, both Zim and Keeley had been mindful of Josie, so they controlled Tommy. Plus, Sandy and Mary had often spoken badly of Josie in front of Tommy, which led to Tommy harboring deep resentment for her.
At this moment, Josie finally understood why she had never liked Tommy from the beginning. It turned out that her instincts and subconscious had been warning her that this child's identity was suspicious.
Yet, she loved Zim too much, trusted him too much. Blind love and trust had clouded her vision, preventing her from seeing the truth of things. The situation today was entirely of her own making.
"Brother! It's them! You should talk to them!" Keeley glared unkindly at the group of people around her. Keeley was supposed to be the future lady of the house here, and these people dared to ignore her.
The man wearing a black hat, who was leading the group, frowned and looked at Zim. "Mr. Godard, I think I need to make it clear—we have an employment cooperation relationship.
"We're not servants for your family. Please tell your sister not to shout at us, or we'll have to be impolite."
The warning from the man in the black hat made Zim uncomfortable, but he still nodded in acknowledgment.
These people were registered in the dark web, and many of them were ruthless wanted criminals. The fact that they patiently waited for him to arrive to say this, instead of directly disciplining Keeley, was already a sign of respect for him.
He believed that if Keeley continued to cause trouble, they certainly wouldn't tolerate it.
"Keeley, stop being rude to them! You better calm down, or there will be consequences!" Zim warned her coldly.
Keeley didn't like it, but when she saw her older brother's warning look, she reluctantly nodded in agreement.
"But there's no one to serve me!" Keeley thought she would be treated like a princess when she came back, but now she had no servants around, just these big, uncouth, and unruly men.
"Can't you wait just a bit? Once everything is settled, you can have whoever you want to serve you," Zim said helplessly. So often, dealing with this family wore him out. But it was fine; soon, the days of suffering would be over.
"Right, since we've already moved in, we should wait patiently. Sooner or later, everything here will be ours," Anthony said, cigarette dangling from his mouth, his eyes lecherously watching Josie.
He thought, 'This girl's not bad. Once things are settled, I'll have some fun with her.'
Mary noticed Anthony's lecherous gaze at Josie but didn't dare to speak up. In this household, it was always Anthony who called the shots.
Before, he might have been polite to her because she was Zim's aunt. But soon, everything would belong to the Godard family, and it would be Zim who had the final say.
By then, Sandy would be the lady of the house, and Mary was nothing. If Anthony doesn't want her anymore, and Sandy tells him, he might just kick her out.
The more Mary thought about it, the more anxious she became. She couldn't take it out on Anthony, so she could only vent all her frustration on Josie.
So, she grabbed whatever object was nearby and threw it at Josie. "Damn you, seductress! Let's see how smug you are now!"
The object hit Josie in the stomach, and an intense pain immediately swept through her body. But she couldn't even scream in pain, only twisting her body and letting out pitiful, animal-like whimpers.
She looked at Zim through her tears, confused and unable to understand how this man could be so heartless.
Anthony, knowing exactly why Mary suddenly targeted Josie, awkwardly looked away, turned to Zim and said, "Zim, where are we with the situation? When can we check the main building?"
"Right, Zim! After this, we'll be living in the main building, right?" Sandy asked.
Every time she had come before, she had only passed by the main building and had never been invited inside. She had been longing to see what it was like inside.
If the Rainfall Retreat where Josie stayed was so luxurious, then the main building, which only the family head could enter, must be even more grand.
Keeley sneered, mocking Sandy for overestimating herself. "You think you deserve to live in the main building? You're just here because you gave my brother a son. Do you really think you're the lady of this house?"
"Keeley, how can you talk to me like that?" Sandy's face darkened. In the past, she had always put up with Keeley's attitude because she had no title, but now, she was going to be the only woman by Zim's side.
"What do you mean? The only people closest here are me and my brother. I haven't even mentioned moving into the main building. You, a mistress, want to stay there? If that gets out, what will people think of my brother?" said Keeley.
Keeley was right in saying that even if things worked out, with Zim emerging as the new head of the family, he couldn't risk exposing Sandy and Tommy in public so soon. Not only would it hurt his reputation, but it would also raise suspicions.
Sandy looked at Zim's silence, her heart sinking. "Zim, we've even had a child. You—"
"Enough. Let's not talk about this now. We'll deal with that later." Zim turned his attention to the man in the black hat. "How's everything with Anna?"
"Everything's going smoothly. Edmond has taken control of the situation," the man in the black hat answered.
Zim scoffed, his eyes filled with contempt for Edmond. "That fool!" He had been his knife all this time, and yet he didn't even realize it, still feeling proud.
"Alright, it's time for us to go." Zim nodded at the man in the black hat. He then looked at Josie. "Take this fool with us!"
With that, Zim hummed a tune and walked out. Two strong men lifted Josie and started walking her out.
Keeley, who had been standing near Josie, couldn't help but take a longer look when she saw her being lifted like a dead dog.
And then, she noticed a patch of blood on the carpet where Josie had been lying. She thought, 'Huh? She's bleeding? But she doesn't have any injuries. How could she be bleeding?'
