"Grandma! Say something, Grandma!" Christopher was on his knees, grabbing Anna's pants, crying out in desperation.
It was as if the arrogant and mocking person who had once insulted Anna with Edmond was not him at all. Now, Christopher seemed to have turned back into the considerate, spoiled grandson he used to be.
Florence had originally hoped that Christopher would stand up for her and teach Zim's relatives a lesson. But now, she was completely shocked by this scene.
She gritted her teeth and painfully walked toward Christopher. "Honey, what are you saying? What's going on? What are you talking about?"
They were supposed to wait for Tyson to sign the documents and then the entire Godard family and the Godard Group would be theirs to control. They were supposed to be the unquestioned masters of the family after today. Cole even came to rescue her and Bella.
Now, nothing made any sense to her. She couldn't understand why Paisley and Max were still alive or why Christopher was crying and begging.
"Honey!" Florence's heart started racing as she realized the severity of the situation.
At a critical moment, Christopher had no time to explain to Florence. He shoved her aside but grabbed her to stop her from falling.
"Honey." Florence felt touched. Her husband still couldn't bear to see her hurt.
However, immediately after, his hand yanked her arm, pulling her forward. Florence, already weak from the beating, couldn't handle the violent pull from Christopher. Her body lurched forward and she collapsed to the ground, the feeling of broken bones spreading through her body again.
"Ah." She screamed in agony.
But Christopher didn't care if she was in pain. He pressed her head down into the floor. "Florence, quickly, beg Grandma; ask her to help us!"
Just dragging Florence wasn't enough for him. Christopher turned and yanked Bella, who was standing nearby, down as well. He didn't care that Bella had just been beaten and was only a five-year-old girl. He ruthlessly forced her tiny body down. Bella's tiny knee hit the floor hard.
"Ah! It hurts!" Bella screamed, crying uncontrollably.
At this point, Christopher seemed completely unhinged. "Bella, quickly, bow to your great-grandmother and beg her to save us!"
Bella didn't understand, her words slurred as she cried, while her head was repeatedly pushed down by Christopher.
"Enough!" Anna couldn't take it anymore, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Her cloudy eyes stared fiercely at Christopher, her gaze shifting from complex to despair, and finally to deep helplessness. Tears streamed down her face as she closed her eyes, letting them run down her withered cheeks. Her lips trembled, but no words came out.
"Grandma." Christopher, in a terrible posture, knelt on the floor, pressing both of his hands on his wife and daughter's heads.
He stared intently at Anna, waiting for her to speak. But all he got in return was her tears and silence.
"Grandma, aren't you going to say something? Grandma?" Not receiving a response, Christopher stood up abruptly, furiously pointing at Anna. "Old hag! You really plan to let me suffer, don't you? Are you going to let Paisley send me to be tortured?
"I go to prison, my dad goes to prison, and you're still the head of this family, living the good life, being waited on, right?"
Anna's tears flowed even more fiercely, her body swaying as if she might collapse at any moment.
Christopher's accusations kept coming, filled with rage and madness. "The Godard family's situation today is all because of you, you're the real culprit! You're the one who said the Godard family bloodline is the only one that should inherit the Godard family!
"You're the one who said women are useless, that only men can run the house and carry the family name! It's you who kept protecting my dad and me, giving us false hope!
"If it weren't for your encouragement and indulgence, how would my dad and I have gone this far? How would we have recklessly fought for this? This is all your fault! You're the one who should be locked up, you're the real sinner of this family!"
And Christopher wasn't wrong. Edmond did have ambitions, and he was indeed dissatisfied with how the family was being managed. But if it weren't for Anna's favoritism and indulgence, he would never have been so reckless.
Anna had nurtured the second branch's ambition and impulsiveness, making Edmond increasingly paranoid, less and less willing to be under Tyson's control.
Christopher's accusations landed like heavy hammers, striking Anna's heart. Instantly, anger surged, and a sweet, metallic taste filled her throat again.
Christopher thought that by provoking her like this, Anna would at least react a little, but she still disappointed him.
Now, Christopher gave up completely, saying everything that came to his mind. "You old fool, if I'm going down, you're not getting away unscathed! It was you who had them give Max that deadly medicine, hoping to kill him quietly without anyone knowing!"
"You—" Anna's tightly closed eyes snapped open when she heard those words, and she looked frantically at Max.
Christopher laughed wildly, "Feeling guilty, huh? You vicious old thing!"
He then turned to Max, "Don't get too smug. This time, your luck saved you. But your body has already been ruined by the drugs you've been taking. Even if you don't die, you won't be fine!"
He pointed at Anna. "Blame her! She tried to poison you! She wanted you dead so no one could challenge me!"
"I-I—" Anna really wanted to shut Christopher up. She thought this secret would stay between them.
At this point, Christopher should have been trying to get Paisley and Max's forgiveness. But talking about this would only make them furious. She never expected Christopher would be reckless enough to spill everything.
Christopher, like a junkie high on his own anger, looked at Max, hoping to see even a hint of fear on Max's or anyone from the first branch's face.
Edmond's eyes also looked toward Tyson, and it was clear he wasn't the least bit moved.
"Sorry to disappoint you," Max said with a faint smile, "When I went to Harrowfell, Paisley already figured out there was something wrong with my medicine. I switched it a long time ago and followed Paisley's prescription. So, I should live well from here on."
Anna's eyes widened in shock and disbelief as she stared at Paisley.
"You knew about the medicine. You knew all along." Edmond slowly stood from his chair, like a zombie, and walked toward Tyson. "Tyson, why didn't you warn me? You just watched me get used by Zim, waiting for me to fall into the trap! You're my brother!"
Edmond rushed at Tyson, but Ocean and his men kicked him down. He lay on the floor, completely humiliated.
"Ugh! I've never seen someone like you! You walk down a crooked path, and then you blame others for not warning you!" Ocean glared at Edmond, wishing he could tear him apart.
