Tyson looked at Edmond with complex emotions. Once upon a time, they had a close and respectful relationship. Tyson couldn't pinpoint when exactly it all went wrong, and he didn't want to. In the end, their brotherly bond had reached its end.
"Actually, I didn't know everything from the beginning. I have to thank my daughter, Paisley. If it weren't for her, back in Brightmoor, you would have succeeded. I might have really died from the poison, right there," said Tyson.
Edmond looked at Paisley and then at Christopher. Paisley had saved Tyson when he was in danger, while Christopher had been the first to distance himself from him in the time of trouble. A stark contrast, plain to see.
Tyson realized he should have seen this from the start, but he'd always been too obsessed with that position, with the idea that men were superior and women are inferior, as Anna had always told him.
He thought just because his son was the only male heir of the Godard family, the whole family's future should belong to him because only he could carry on the family legacy.
At this moment, he finally understood why his father had ignored him, despite being right there, and had insisted on bringing Tyson back. If he had truly taken power, and had a choice, he wouldn't have handed the inheritance to someone like Christopher.
Tyson said, "Of course, even if I had died in Brightmoor, you wouldn't have won, it would have been him."
Tyson's words struck Edmond hard. Yes, from start to finish, he had been used by Zim. Every step he took was part of Zim's plan.
Edmond lay on the floor, motionless, as if all the life had been drained from him.
"Zim, what's going on? What are they saying?" Anthony had been excitedly checking out the interior of the Moon Haven, thinking about how he might redecorate it if he moved in.
But then, the things the people around him were saying started sounding strange, and even Zim was acting off.
"Brother! Brother! Talk to me! Why are Paisley and Max still alive?" Keeley shook Zim.
Zim seemed as if he couldn't bear the blow. At her shaking, he stiffly turned around and looked at Paisley with focused intent.
He had been scheming secretly for so long, and everything had been going according to plan, moving smoothly. Now it was all ruined by Paisley.
He had once thought that Max and Tyson were his biggest obstacles, but now he realized it was Paisley. From the moment this woman appeared, his plan started crumbling. Now, he finally understood.
Paisley's previous arrogance had all been an act. Her desire to enter Godard Group, to push out Christopher and Edmond, had all been a facade. Her real goal was to lure him out. And just like the foolish Edmond, he had walked right into her trap.
"It's you. It's you." Zim glared at Paisley, his eyes cold and vicious, like a maddened snake. Under his irises, his reason faded. "I'll kill you! I'll kill you!"
He lost his mind, pushing Keeley and Anthony away as he lunged toward Paisley with a wild, bloodshot gaze. But he didn't even get close to Paisley before Jake grabbed him and slammed him to the ground.
He was forced to lie on the ground, looking up. His eyes were bloodshot, veins bulging in his neck and forehead. It was painful, but he still stubbornly glared at Paisley. "I'll kill you! Paisley, I'm going to kill you!"
Jake punched Zim in the face, causing him to spit blood, along with some teeth. As Jake raised his fist again, Paisley spoke up just in time. "Enough, leave him some breath."
One punch from Jake was hard enough for most people to handle; two would probably knock Zim unconscious. It wasn't that Paisley was worried about Zim, but she didn't want Jake's men to go too far—she didn't want trouble with Jolin.
Jake listened to Paisley's command, retracting his fist and releasing Zim like a discarded piece of trash. He stood in front of Paisley with a solemn face.
"This idiot doesn't know when to quit," Jake muttered.
"Ah! Zim!" Only when Jake stepped away did Sandy dare to run toward Zim. The sound of her expensive heels dragging across the marble floor was jarring.
Josie, who had remained silent the entire time, immediately recognized that the shoes Sandy was wearing were hers. Looking up, she noticed that Sandy was also wearing her clothes. A cold laugh escaped from Josie.
"Zim, what the hell is going on? What happened?" Sandy's eyes were red, but there weren't many tears. Instead, there was more fear than anything.
"Yeah! You better give me an explanation!" Anthony glared at everyone around him. "How dare you treat the future head of the family like this? Are you all looking for trouble?"
At this moment, Anthony was still lost in his delusions of becoming a superior man in the future. Even as the situation grew tense, he refused to accept it.
"The head of the family?" Josie spoke coldly, her sharp eyes scanning Anthony and Sandy, then landing on Keeley and Zim. "He's just a loser!"
Josie had never imagined she would say such words one day. Zim's body froze at her words. Those words were like a deadly poison to him. And when they came from Josie's mouth, they were even more lethal.
She then cast an icy glance at Sandy and coldly ordered Cole, "Cole, get a few people to strip her of her clothes and shoes!"
Cole hesitated, but then followed Josie's order, choosing a few older housemaids who had worked as cleaners for years. "You all go, and do as Miss instructed!"
The housemaids, all with families of their own, despised women who tried to become the mistress of a man, especially when they were involved with someone like Zim. Without hesitation, the housemaids marched toward Sandy with stern faces.
"Ah! What are you doing? How dare you!" Sandy screamed.
The next second, one of the housemaids slapped Sandy across the face. "Shameless slut! Didn't you know you can't have a married man? You dare to be a side chick and wear Miss's clothes! Ladies, strip her down!"
"Ah! No! Get away!" Sandy's clothes, the ones belonging to Josie, were ripped off, leaving only her undergarments.
Sandy was desperate and helpless as she covered herself, scrambling for help from Zim, but he never responded.
"Miss, here are the clothes." One of the housemaids approached with the clothes.
Josie didn't even look up. "Throw it all away. Everything these people have touched in Rainfall Retreat, throw it out! And this man's, too."
Josie sat on the sofa, her pale face turned toward Zim, the man she had once loved deeply. "Everything that belongs to him, throw it all away!"
"Josie! How dare you look down on me! What right do you have to look down on me? Because of a single word from you, I went from being the proud son to the Godard family's lowly son-in-law.
"Because of a single word from you, I can't even have a child of my own! What right do you have to look down on me?" Zim screamed.
Zim's pupils swirled with a bloody rage, foam spraying from his mouth with the frantic words.
Josie's body swayed for a moment, and a determined smile spread across her pale face. "Zim, if I remember correctly, it was you who initiated this. It was you who said you liked me and would disregard everything for me.
"If it weren't for that, there were plenty of men in the world who wanted to marry me. Why would I choose you?"
"And," Josie gave a bitter smile, "Three months ago, I stopped taking the birth control pills. Every time I saw how much you loved Tommy, I felt guilty.
"So, I thought, if heaven allowed me to get pregnant at this age, I'd have a child that belongs to us. Maybe heaven took pity on me because the child never came."
"No, Josie." Paisley interrupted Josie's words. She looked at Josie's pale face, hesitated for a moment, but finally spoke, "You're pregnant."
