"Pregnant?" Josie's pale face, upon hearing Paisley's words, flushed briefly with excitement. "Paisy, are you sure?"
"Mm, I'm sure." Paisley nodded affirmatively.
The room immediately fell silent, and everyone turned to look at Josie. Even Anna, who had been lying with her eyes closed, looking lifeless, opened her eyes upon hearing the news, staring at Josie in shock.
"Pregnant? You're pregnant?" Zim forgot about struggling and resisting. He collapsed on the ground, trying to get up but failing repeatedly. He could only squirm in place, but the joy in his eyes was unmistakable.
Sandy had awkwardly put on Mary's outerwear, which didn't fit well, hanging loosely on her. But in the room, other than Mary, who couldn't stand seeing it and was willing to give Sandy her outerwear, no one else cared. Sandy had no choice but to wear Mary's clothes.
While she was hastily adjusting her clothes, she heard the news about Josie's pregnancy. Her actions immediately froze, and she looked at Josie in shock. But in her shock, there was also a strong sense of panic and jealousy.
If Josie was pregnant, then Tommy would be nobody. She would also be nobody.
Sandy nervously looked at Zim, and sure enough, she saw both shock and joy in his eyes. Sandy clenched her teeth, feeling turmoil rising in her chest.
Mary and Anthony also had grim expressions. They were even less pleased with the news of Josie's pregnancy than Sandy. Their family's only chance at a better life was Zim. To live a life above the rest, they needed to be deeply tied to him.
This was why Anthony had pushed Sandy to get involved with Zim even knowing he would be talked about behind his back. With Tommy around, Zim would do everything to support and care for them.
But if Josie had Zim's child, then Tommy would become a complete illegitimate child. The couple looked at Josie with growing hostility.
Mary deeply regretted not taking something significant to throw at Josie's stomach when they were in Rainfall Retreat.
Josie's pregnancy was also shocking to Keeley. But amidst the shock, she began to feel joy and relief.
She wasn't like the Sheng family idiots, still holding onto unrealistic hopes and not seeing the situation clearly. She could tell that her brother had completely lost. Paisley and Max would never let them go.
After all, those two hadn't even spared Edmond and Christopher, so they had no reason to spare them. So, the only thing that could save them now was the lingering old feelings Josie had for them.
This child's arrival was perfectly timed. Josie had loved her brother so much before, and now she was pregnant with his child. Perhaps, for the sake of the child, she might forgive them.
Keeley thought this and couldn't help but smile with joy. She didn't notice that beside her, Sandy was glaring at her with an intense, unreadable look.
"Josie, Josie!" Zim struggled to crawl toward Josie, his gaze sincere, as if he had returned to the days when he doted on her.
Josie sat on the sofa, watching Zim slowly approach, her expression distant. Her hand instinctively went to her flat stomach.
"It's a pity—" Paisley's voice cut through Josie's thoughts. She looked at Paisley, tightening her hand over her stomach. "What's wrong?"
"Josie, the child you're carrying cannot make it." Paisley looked at Josie seriously, her eyes devoid of much emotion. By this point, she had no energy left to feel any emotions.
"Why?" Josie paused for a moment, her words filled with urgency. It was clear that she wanted to keep the child.
"Paisley, stop trying to scare me! The baby is perfectly fine. How could it not be saved? I think you don't want Josie and my brother to reconcile! You just want to ruin their relationship!" Keeley shouted.
Keeley was the first to step forward and attack Paisley. In that moment, it seemed she had forgotten how arrogant she was in front of the Godard family members, or how she and her brother had evil intentions to take over the Godard family.
She had reverted back to being the same Keeley, who had a harmonious relationship with Josie at the beginning.
Too bad, the people present had good memories—they weren't fools. Josie didn't even glance at Keeley, her only focus being the child in her womb.
Zim suddenly stopped and looked at Paisley. "Why can't it be saved? How can it not be saved?" He wasn't as foolish as Keeley. He had seen Paisley revive Josie.
"Aunt, the medicine I gave you earlier was a hemostatic drug, stopping the bleeding in your lower abdomen. When I injected you, I used the pain to wake you up. It stopped the bleeding and stabilized your condition."
"But what I was actually saving was not your life—it was the life of the child in your womb." Paisley paused. "I did everything I could. Your baby was already weak. Whether or not it can be saved is still uncertain. Your abdomen suffered another severe impact earlier."
Paisley pointed at Josie's belly. "It no longer has life. To you, it's just a lump of flesh still left in your abdomen. It's better to expel it quickly to prevent further harm to your body."
"A lump of flesh." Josie repeated softly, her head lowered as her eyes stared blankly at her abdomen.
"My Goodness." Anna seemed unable to bear the blow, swaying as she leaned against the couch.
"Grandmother! Are you alright?" The short caregiver rushed to press Anna's acupoint.
Tyson's eyes were full of sadness. He truly felt sorry for his little sister. But the one who could hardly bear the blow was Zim. "Severe impact on her abdomen. How could that happen?"
Keeley suddenly remembered something and turned to Mary. "It was her! She threw a decoration at Josie's belly! I saw Josie bleeding!"
She finally understood why the carpet, where Josie had laid, had bloodstains—it was because the baby had died then.
"Brother! She killed your child!" Keeley was now furious at Mary.
Originally, it seemed like there was a high chance that Josie would keep the child. As long as the child remained, there was still a glimmer of hope for her and her brother. Now, everything was gone. Their last hope had been shattered.
"I-I—" Mary stumbled backward, eventually retreating to the wall. She squatted down, at a loss for what to do. Since she was brought to Moon Haven, she had been the least noticeable.
Earlier, when Zim was beaten and Sandy had her clothes ripped off, she had been hiding in a corner with the equally frightened Tommy. Now, everyone was staring at her, especially Zim and Keeley, whose eyes practically burned with hatred, as if they wanted to kill her.
"I didn't know she was pregnant. If I had known, I would have—" Mary's pale face tried to explain for herself, but then she just rambled, "Anyway, who told her to be so restless? She's pregnant, and still out there seducing men!"
Mary thought back to how Anthony leered at the bound Josie and grew furious. She didn't dare get angry with Anthony, so she took it out on Josie instead.
"It's all her fault, acting all seductive, otherwise, why would I have hit her!" Mary's words were full of excuses, and moral manipulation was something she was skilled at.
But after saying this, she immediately regretted it, realizing that the eyes directed at her had turned even more hostile, especially from Zim.
"Zim, stop putting the blame on me! You had people tie up Josie, and you allowed us to bully her! Now you're pretending? The child's gone, and it's your fault! You didn't even know your wife was pregnant! Are you even human?" said Mary.
"That's right." Paisley's voice rang out, drawing all eyes back to her. "Although the baby in Aunt's womb died due to the impact, as I mentioned earlier, the baby was already weak. Whether it could have been saved was always uncertain."
