Edmond listed all the grievances he had endured over the years as if his entire life had been nothing but suffering and neglect, as if the world owed him something.
He continued, "But, at least, I finally won in one thing—having children. While you, for the sake of that woman from Harrowfell, refused to remarry and have kids of your own, choosing instead to adopt one with no blood relation, I knew my chance had come.
"Sure enough, after that old man died, Anna noticed me. She was willing to support me—just because I have a son. I thought I could use my son to turn my life around. But then, your daughter came back. I figured—what could a woman possibly accomplish?
"So I spread some nasty rumors, ruined her reputation a little, and gave her a reality check. A girl from a humble background, with no experience in high society, would naturally shrink back after something like that."
Edmond looked at Paisley, eyes brimming with envy. "But I was wrong. So wrong. Tyson, I used to envy your talent. Now, I envy you for having such an incredible daughter. On sleepless nights, I'd secretly imagine—what if she were my daughter instead? Who cares about gender? So what if she's a woman?"
Edmond thought, 'If Paisley had been my daughter, I wouldn't have ended up like this.'
"Why does fate give you everything good? Why? Why?" Edmond didn't continue. He simply chuckled—a hollow, defeated laugh.
Paisley silently watched Edmond being taken away. It seemed like he had let go, yet at the same time, he hadn't.
Once Edmond became consumed by his obsession, he lost all sense of direction. Only by stepping out, into a wider world, could he see that there were countless paths to take.
Once upon a time, Paisley had also been caught in obsession. Fortunately, she had broken free early on and hadn't let it consume her entire life.
Suddenly, Zim's anguished wail snapped Paisley out of her thoughts. He lay sprawled on the ground, clutching Josie's ankles and sobbing uncontrollably, "Honey, I know I was wrong. Please save me. Please help me. You promised to love me forever. I regret everything now—let's start over, okay?"
Zim clung desperately to Josie's ankles with all his strength. No matter how hard Elijah and his men pulled, even lifting him off the ground, Zim refused to let go.
Josie's ankle throbbed in pain, and her expression darkened. "Zim, let go of me."
Worried about hurting Josie, Elijah and the others had no choice but to momentarily loosen their grip on Zim.
Therefore, Zim managed to crawl forward and cling to Josie again. "Honey, if it's because of Sandy and Tommy, don't worry—I'll cut ties with them. From now on, we can have our own children."
Sandy, who had already been restrained, heard Zim's words loud and clear. Her eyes filled with despair. "Zim, what are you saying? How could you do this to me?"
Zim ignored her completely, his gaze locked onto Josie. "Honey, please forgive me. I love you. I love you so much!"
"But I don't love you." Josie slapped him across the face. "After everything that happened, if I still forgave you, how could I face my brother? How could I face Paisley and Max? How could I face myself—or the child I lost? Zim, you deserve to die. Just go die!"
Furious, Josie turned to Elijah. "Officer, don't hold back for my sake. Take him away!"
Elijah had already run out of patience. As the mastermind behind everything, Zim was someone he wanted to arrest immediately.
Now that Josie had spoken, he no longer hesitated. He stepped forward and pried Zim's fingers off, one by one.
Zim screamed as he was pulled away. Realizing all hope was gone, he began to rant like a madman, "I was so close! Josie, why didn't you tell me you were pregnant? If I had known, I wouldn't have poisoned you! You killed our child! It was you!"
If he had known earlier, he would've used a different tactic—something less extreme. Maybe then, he would have succeeded.
Josie stared at the deranged Zim, realizing she had never truly known this man.
Just then, a hand grabbed her—it was Keeley, who was about to be taken away.
"Josie, I was wrong! I know now that you were the only one who truly cared about me. I'll make it up to you, I swear! Please, save me! Didn't you love me the most?" Keeley sobbed, looking utterly pathetic.
Josie pried Keeley's hand off and scoffed, "Oh, so now you remember how much I cared about you?"
"I know. But this has nothing to do with me. I had no idea about any of this before!" Keeley continued to plead.
"Don't say that to me. Tell it to the police inside," Josie said coldly.
Josie's body had become extremely weak. After saying her last words, she started to sway. Fortunately, Jolin was right beside her and caught her immediately.
After taking everyone away, Jolin walked up to Paisley and said, "Uncle, Max, Paisley, you all have to come with us for further investigation."
"Alright, we'll cooperate." Tyson nodded, his expression still carrying the authority of a superior.
Then, he turned to Max. "Something this big happened today. There's no way to keep it under wraps. I'll leave the follow-up to you."
"Got it; don't worry, Dad," Max agreed and then gave Paisley a respectful look. Within a single day, two major threats had been eliminated. He couldn't help but admire Paisley's sharpness and decisiveness, something he couldn't compare.
He felt he had to improve himself even further if he wanted to be qualified to stay by her side.
Thinking about this, Max found himself despising Dominick even more. He thought, 'That guy possessed her completely, so why didn't he cherish her? And now, what's there to regret?
In the presidential suite of the hotel, Dominick suddenly felt an itch in his nose and sneezed involuntarily.
In front of the computer screen, Grayson looked up at him. "Dad, are you catching a cold?"
"No." Dominick rubbed his nose, his brows furrowed deeply.
Grayson didn't dare to say much. Ever since his return, Dominick's brows hadn't relaxed once.
Grayson was actually quite curious. Dominick had left not long ago, saying he was going to find Paisley, but he came back shortly after. Not only did he fail to bring Paisley back, but he also returned with an injured hand.
No matter how much Grayson asked, Dominick refused to tell him what had happened.
Thinking about this, Grayson turned his head and looked at Serena, who was practically glued to the computer screen. "Rena, do you miss Mom?"
Serena immediately lifted her head and blinked. "Yes."
"Then why don't you ask Dad? Didn't he just go looking for Mom? Ask him when she's coming to pick us up," Grayson coaxed her in a whisper.
Serena raised her head slightly, peeking over the screen to look at Dominick. Seeing him frowning, looking as if he was mad about something, and appearing quite scary, she didn't want to go over. "Why me? I don't want to talk to him. He's so mean."
Grayson thought for a moment. "If you ask, I'll teach you that game from earlier."
The temptation of a game was too strong. Serena hesitated but ultimately let her desire to play override her dislike for Dominick. "Fine, I'll ask."
Serena wasn't worried about when Paisley would come for her at all. She knew for sure that Paisley would come. But if all she had to do was ask and she'd get to play the game, she was willing to do it.
So, Serena grabbed the edge of the coffee table to stand up and waddled over to Dominick like a baby penguin.
Dominick had been forcibly escorted back to the hotel by Paisley's men. At this moment, he was anxiously worrying about Paisley. She had told him she'd contact him once everything was settled, but so much time had passed, and she still hadn't.
And yet, right now, he didn't dare to reach out to Paisley, afraid that a single call from him might distract her.
He thought, 'Damn woman, why didn't you let me go back with you? And I was an idiot. I should have insisted on going with her. Even if she got mad, I should have followed her.'
"Don't worry; my teacher will be fine," Linna said lazily, and then took a big gulp of wine.
Dominick shot Linna a glare, his frustration growing stronger. He thought, 'Paisley, just look at the people around you. Not a single reliable one.'
Just then, a small, soft, and sweet voice rang in Dominick's ear.
His body stiffened suddenly. When he looked down, he saw Serena, dressed in a fluffy bunny onesie, standing beside him without him even noticing.
Serena's little cheeks were rosy, and her big watery eyes stared at him without blinking.
Just one look, and Dominick's heart felt warm. "What is it? Do you need me to do something? You can tell me whatever you want." Dominick had never spoken in such a gentle tone before.
Grayson was rendered speechless. This was a side of Dominick he had never seen before. After all these years, he realized Dominick had completely ignored him.
