Outside the police station, Anthony and Mary exchanged glances. They thought they would be locked up for a while longer, but to their surprise, they were released after less than two days.
Before long, Keeley and Sandy also walked out.
"You guys are out too?" Mary ran up to them, wanting to ask what had happened, but then she saw Jolin walking out with a cold expression.
Shocked, Mary immediately shut her mouth, took two steps back, and looked at Jolin warily.
Anthony, on the other hand, shifted his left foot forward slightly, looking ready to bolt at any moment.
Jolin took in the sight of Anthony and Mary, feeling nothing but disgust. She thought, 'People like them should have just been left inside to rot. Letting them out is just a burden on society. Especially that Anthony.'
While investigating them, Jolin discovered that Anthony had many bad habits. Over the years, he had committed numerous offenses, and each time, Zim secretly used the Godard family's money to settle things.
Josie had trusted Zim so much, handing over both power and money to him. Yet, Zim had been using the Godard family's wealth to support these scumbags. The thought of made Jolin boil with rage. However, she couldn't do a thing about it.
The lawyer glanced at the group, ensuring no one was missing, and then respectfully nodded at Jolin. "Thank you for your efforts, Ms. Godard. Now that they've been released, you don't need to concern yourself with the matter any further."
The lawyer's words carried an underlying meaning, but Jolin, still fuming, couldn't be bothered to read between the lines. "I just don't understand. Why bail them out?"
Shooting them one last vicious glare, she stormed back into the station, burning with rage.
She had made up her mind—she would interrogate Zim again. All night if she had to.
Keeley recognized the lawyer—he was the Godard family's legal counsel. Seeing him about to leave, Keeley hurried forward to stop him. "Wait a minute."
The lawyer frowned slightly, stepping back to put some distance between them. Though he maintained a professional smile, it didn't reach his eyes and carried a hint of disdain. He even instinctively pulled out a handkerchief and covered his nose.
Keeley was both furious and embarrassed. She quickly raised her arm and sniffed herself—sure enough, there was a sour stench.
Startled, she immediately lowered her arm and coughed lightly to cover her awkwardness. "I've seen you before. You're the Godard family's lawyer. Were you the one who bailed us out?"
"Yes, that's correct," the lawyer answered matter-of-factly.
Keeley's eyes lit up, and she excitedly stepped forward, but when she saw the clear disdain in the lawyer's eyes, she hesitated.
Resentment bubbled inside Keeley, but knowing her current situation, she forced herself to stay calm and asked, "Did my sister-in-law send you? Has she forgiven me? Take me to her—I want to thank her in person."
Keeley kept calling Josie her sister-in-law, blatantly ignoring Sandy's presence and showing no concern whatsoever for how she felt about it.
The lawyer, however, immediately killed Keeley's hopes. "I'm just following orders. I haven't received any additional instructions. Now that you're all out, my job here is done."
With that, he got into his car and drove off, leaving Keeley coughing in the dust and exhaust fumes as she chased after him.
"You!" Keeley's face turned livid with anger. She thought, 'Just you wait. Once I see my sister-in-law, I'll definitely make sure she knows what kind of person you are.'
"So, the Godard family paid to bail us out?" Mary asked in confusion.
Deep down, Keeley always despised Mary, an uneducated and ignorant aunt. Hearing her words, Keeley scoffed, "Bail? Aunt, can you have some class? Do you think you're some brothel girl getting bought out?"
Mary's face turned ugly at Keeley's sharp words, but she didn't dare talk back. After all, it was the Godard family's money that got them out, and out of everyone here, Keeley was the only one who still had a connection to them.
"Exactly. If you don't know what you're talking about, shut up. What bad luck," Anthony snapped at Mary impatiently.
Mary pursed her lips, standing there helplessly as she mumbled, "Then what do we do now?"
"What else? We go home." Anthony clasped his hands behind his back and walked away from the police station.
Mary bit her lip and, feeling as pitiful as Gloria, followed closely behind him. After a few steps, she noticed Keeley tagging along. "Keeley, why are you coming with us?"
Keeley's face was dark. "What do you think? Don't forget—the house you're living in right now was bought by my brother."
She spoke with confidence, but deep down, she knew she couldn't return to the Godard family. She had no money and couldn't see Josie for the time being, so she had no choice but to follow Mary and the others back.
Seeing the hesitation on Mary's face, Keeley lifted her chin and said, "Don't worry. Once I make my sister-in-law happy, I'll move out of that lousy house. By then, even if you beg me, I won't stay there."
Even at this moment, Keeley still clung to the illusion that as long as she could please Josie, she could go back to being the old Keeley.
Even if things could never be the same, at the very least, she wouldn't have to worry about food and clothing. Worst case scenario, she could just ask Josie for a sum of money and leave the country.
After all, looking at the entire Godard family, the only person who could afford to bail her out at this moment was Josie, who had once spoiled her like a real younger sister. Keeley couldn't think of anyone else.
That was why Keeley firmly believed she still had a chance to win Josie over.
With that hope in mind, Keeley followed Mary, Anthony, and the others as they left. But before heading home, they first went to the welfare agency to pick up Tommy.
Unlike Bella, Tommy had no connection to the Godard family, so they naturally wouldn't take him in.
After the incident, his parents and relatives were all arrested, and the police had no choice but to temporarily place him in a welfare agency.
Outside the agency, Sandy paced anxiously back and forth. They weren't allowed inside and could only wait outside. But they had been waiting for a long time, and Tommy was still nowhere to be seen.
Keeley scoffed indifferently, "What are you so anxious about? It's not like he'll get lost."
Sandy glared at her furiously. Gone was the submissive, obedient woman she used to be.
Keeley was startled by Sandy's glare. "Why are you staring at me? Did I say something wrong? If you piss me off, I'll have my sister-in-law throw you back in. Don't forget, the money that got you all out came from her."
Sandy clenched her fists tightly, biting down on her teeth.
Just then, the agency's doors finally opened again, and a staff member led Tommy outside.
"Tommy!" Sandy forgot all about Keeley and ran straight toward Tommy.
But the moment she saw him, she froze in shock—Tommy was covered in bruises, one of his front teeth was missing, and his clothes were torn to shreds. The sight of Sandy made Tommy burst into tears.
"How did this happen? Why is my son beaten up like this? How do you people even take care of children?" Sandy yelled in fury as she held Tommy in her arms.
The staff member was just as frustrated. Instead of backing down, they snapped back, "Why don't you ask yourself what kind of trouble your son has been causing? You adults got yourselves arrested, and we took him in out of kindness.
"But the moment he arrived, he started bullying a little girl—pulling up her skirt and insisting on seeing what was underneath. Do you think that's something a child his age should be doing?"
"What nonsense are you talking about? My son would never do something like that!" Sandy shouted, her face red with anger.
"Nonsense? Do you want me to pull up the surveillance footage for you?" The staff member didn't back down. "If it weren't for the older kids stepping in just in time, who knows what would've happened to that little girl?"
Crossing her arms, the staff member stood their ground. "Yes, I admit it. The older kids here beat up your son. But tell me, didn't he deserve it?
"He's already this filthy-minded at such a young age—if no one teaches him a lesson now, what will he become when he grows up? If you have a problem with it, go ahead and call the police. Report us to our superiors. Or better yet, blast it all over the internet."
