Jasper's words made the other boys around them start laughing. Then, they began to chant.
"Serena has no dad!"
"Serena has no dad!"
"Serena's mom is the nanny!"
"Serena's mom is the nanny!"
Sophia was busy elsewhere and didn't notice what was happening.
Another teacher was helping a kid who had just wet his pants, so she could only glance over occasionally. Seeing the kids laughing, she didn't think much of it.
Surrounded and mocked by the boys, Serena felt humiliated. "My mom is not the nanny! My mom is amazing! She's not the nanny!"
The truth was, Serena didn't actually know what Paisley did for work. All she knew was that Paisley was incredible—Paisley could do anything and knew everything.
In Serena's eyes, Paisley was the most amazing person in the world.
Jasper looked unconvinced and kept teasing, "Yeah, right! You're saying your mom's not the nanny? I saw her this morning—she looked all messy when she dropped you off! My family's nanny looks just like that."
This morning, it was Maria who brought Serena to school. She wore the clothes she usually wore when grocery shopping—casual, maybe, but definitely not messy.
"Maria took me here, not my mom. And Maria's not messy!" Serena's eyes turned red with anger, tears welling up.
But Jasper just smirked, "Liar. I don't believe you. If you're so sure, then tell your mom to come here!"
"Hmph! My mom's coming this afternoon for the sports day, and she's gonna beat all of your moms! My mom's amazing!" Serena declared, completely convinced.
"Your mom is the nanny. What else can she do besides cook and clean? My mom, on the other hand, does yoga!"
"I said my mom is NOT the nanny!" Serena puffed up angrily and turned to Elara, who had been watching from the side. "Elara, you've seen my mom! Tell him! My mom isn't the nanny—she's amazing!"
Several kids in their class had attended Millie's birthday party before, so they had seen Paisley.
Elara glanced at Jasper. She was about to confirm Serena's words but got scared when Jasper narrowed his eyes at her. Instead, Elara hesitated and mumbled, "But, you don't have a dad."
That way, she wouldn't be lying.
Jasper, satisfied, grinned and started teasing Serena again, "Ohhh! Serena has no dad! Serena's mom is useless!"
This time, he didn't even call her mom the nanny anymore—he just straight-up called her useless.
If Serena was going to brag about how amazing her mom was, then he was going to say she was worthless, just to spite her.
The other boys joined in with Jasper, circling around Serena and egging him on. "Serena doesn't have a dad. Serena's mom is useless."
Serena finally had enough. She grabbed a ball that hadn't been wiped yet and hurled it straight at Jasper's face. "Don't talk about my mom like that!"
The ball smacked Jasper hard in the head, making his nose bleed instantly.
Just then, the teacher who had been helping the kid with the accident came back. Seeing Jasper's bloody nose, she froze in shock.
"What happened? Why is Jasper's nose bleeding?" She rushed over to check on him.
Jasper was too stunned to react at first. It wasn't until the teacher asked what happened that he snapped out of it and burst into tears. "Teacher, Rena hit me! She threw a ball at me!"
Serena glared at him with wide, round eyes. "He deserved it! He insulted my mom!"
"I didn't!" Jasper sobbed, looking wronged. "I was just joking! I wanted to play with her."
"Rena, no matter what, you can't hit your classmates. You're friends—you should be playing together, not fighting. Apologize now," the teacher scolded.
Serena's eyes were red, but she stubbornly held her ground. "No! He insulted my mom!"
"I didn't! I was just joking!" Jasper cried even harder.
The other boys who had been backing him up quickly nodded, afraid of getting in trouble. "Yeah, we were just playing with her."
The teacher sighed, looking at Serena, "Rena, ever since you came back to kindergarten, you haven't been fitting in. And now, you're hitting other kids? If you don't apologize, I'll have to punish you."
Serena felt wronged, tears welling up in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.
"I can prove that Jasper was bullying Rena." A quiet boy suddenly spoke up.
Serena looked over, her eyes teary. It was Ivan Joyce, the class's quiet little genius.
The other boys shot him warning looks, but Ivan walked up without hesitation and said, "I was right next to Rena just now. I heard everything.
"Jasper and the others kept saying she doesn't have a dad and that her mom is useless. They said it over and over. Jasper even kicked away the ball Rena worked so hard to clean. It's over there."
Ivan pointed at a ball lying not far away.
The teacher glanced at the ball, and then back at Ivan, as if trying to confirm his words.
Ivan remained calm. "If you don't believe me, you can check the security cameras. Elara saw it too."
The teacher turned to Elara. She hesitated, looking nervous under Jasper's glare, but eventually nodded, whispering, "Yeah."
"I was just joking! And now my nose is bleeding!" Jasper whined, fake crying.
Seeing his nosebleed getting worse, the teacher didn't argue any further and hurriedly took him to the infirmary.
The other boys glared at Ivan and Elara, but just then, Sophia walked in. They didn't dare say anything else and quickly scattered.
Elara pouted, looking like she was about to cry. She turned to Serena and complained, "Rena, this is all your fault! Now they're going to leave me out too!"
Sniffling, Elara ran off.
Serena looked at Ivan, her voice still shaky from crying. "Thank you."
"It's nothing. Let's clean the balls together." Ivan sat down and started wiping one without waiting for a response.
Serena's emotions came and went quickly. Seeing him sit down, she grinned and joined him.
The two of them sat shoulder to shoulder, wiping the balls together.
The sports day hadn't even started yet, but many parents had already arrived.
The earliest ones there were Jasper's family. In fact, they had brought the most family members of anyone.
Right now, his parents and grandparents were surrounding Sophia and the teacher, demanding an explanation.
"Oh dear! Let me tell you, our Jasper has never even had a scratch before! And now, some little brat gave him a bloody nose with a ball? Your kindergarten better give us a proper explanation!" His grandmother, dressed in luxury and sporting a short haircut, looked like a force to be reckoned with.
Beside her, Jasper's grandfather stood with a dark expression, glaring at Sophia.
His mother, the picture of a Harrowfell socialite, cradled him in her arms, fussing over him. "Baby, does it hurt? Mommy's heart is breaking for you!"
His father, dressed in a custom-tailored suit, stood there with a deep frown. "I want to see the principal. We donated a significant amount of money to this kindergarten, and this is how you treat my son?"
The principal rushed over after hearing the commotion and immediately apologized, "Mr. Gough, I deeply regret that your son was hurt. I take full responsibility."
Not far away, in the crowd, Ivan gently took Serena's hand. "Don't be scared. I can testify for you."
Serena shook her head. "I'm not scared."
She just regretted losing her temper earlier. It felt like she had caused more trouble for her mom.
"Mr. Gough, please rest assured. Our kindergarten has top-tier doctors. We already had him checked, and it's just a nosebleed. Nothing serious," Sophia explained.
"Just a nosebleed?" Jasper's grandmother exploded. "How about I give you one and see how it feels?"
"Enough talking. Where's the kid who hit my grandson? Bring her here," Jasper's grandpa ordered in a deep voice.
The Gough family had some influence in Harrowfell. This time, they had donated a sizable amount to the kindergarten to build their reputation, and at the same time, they had enrolled Jasper. In their minds, Jasper should have been treated like royalty here. Instead, he had gotten hit.
"Mr. Gough, the girl didn't do it on purpose. It was just kids playing around. Please don't scare her." Sophia tried to defend Serena.
"Hmph! My son got a bloody nose, and I can't even make her apologize?" Jasper's father snapped.
Jasper raised his hand and pointed at Serena, who wasn't too far away. "Dad, there she is."
At that moment, everyone's eyes turned toward Serena.
"That kid hit you?" Jasper's grandmother got furious instantly. She stomped toward Serena in her high heels.
Just as she grabbed Serena's clothes, a cold voice rang out from behind.
"Take your damn hands off her." Jasper's grandmother froze for a moment and turned around, only to see a tall guy with bright red hair.
Nathaniel's face was grim as he shot a dangerous look at Jasper's grandmother. "Didn't you hear me? Get your claws off my cousin."
Nathaniel had rushed over after getting a last-minute call from Max. Max and Tyson's flight was delayed, so they couldn't make it to the kindergarten in time. That was why Nathaniel got there first.
Byron had arrived with him.
"Serena has no dad!"
"Serena has no dad!"
"Serena's mom is the nanny!"
