On set, Paisley kept glancing at the time anxiously.
Serena's kindergarten sports day was about to start, but she still hadn't left the filming set.
Finally, after what felt like forever, work wrapped up. Paisley hurried to pack her things and walked out of the studio, only to find that her car was gone.
She called Lucy, only to learn that Lucy had taken it.
Lucy's car had been in the shop for repairs after an accident two days ago, and since there was an urgent issue at the studio, she had no choice but to borrow Paisley's car. She had actually told Paisley beforehand.
But at the time, Paisley had been too focused on her work to listen properly and had absentmindedly agreed.
Now, seeing that she was running out of time, Paisley had no choice but to walk toward the filming base's entrance while calling for a ride.
She didn't even want to think about what it would be like if every other kid's parents showed up except for Serena's. That little girl would feel so alone.
Just then, a car drove up from behind and stopped beside Paisley. The window slowly rolled down, revealing Sheela's stunning face.
"Ms. Sutton, where are you going? I can give you a ride." Sheela had already finished all her scenes for the day and had nothing to do that afternoon. She was just about to go for a drive when she saw Paisley rushing around.
Paisley didn't stand on ceremony and got into the passenger seat right away. "Thanks, I appreciate it."
Then, she gave her the address of Serena's kindergarten.
Sheela looked it up on the GPS and realized it was a kindergarten, which immediately piqued her interest. "Ms. Sutton, are you picking up your daughter?"
"No, there's a sports day event at the kindergarten today, and I need to be there," Paisley explained.
"Oh, a sports day." Sheela's eyes sparkled. "I used to love sports day when I was in school. What's a kindergarten sports day like? I don't even remember anymore."
"Sheela, I'm kind of in a hurry. It's a long way to my daughter's kindergarten, so could you—"
"Got it, don't worry." Before Paisley could finish, Sheela floored the gas pedal.
Inside the kindergarten, Nathaniel's cold gaze bore down on Jasper's grandmother from above.
The sunlight hit his striking red hair just right, and combined with his towering height of over six foot three, it made him look even more imposing.
"I...you—" Jasper's grandmother was so startled by Nathaniel's presence that she took two steps back, instinctively letting go of Serena's clothes. "W-Who are you? What do you want?"
The principal, teachers, and parents at the scene all turned their attention toward them. More and more parents were arriving, and the number of onlookers grew.
"Prince Charming." Serena hadn't expected to see her dream boy at the kindergarten. She had been really scared by Jasper's grandmother just now, and the moment she saw Nathaniel, the tears she had been holding back spilled over.
That familiar, choked-up "Prince Charming" shattered Nathaniel's heart in an instant.
Along with that heartbreak came a deep, overwhelming sadness.
At first, he had planned on becoming Serena's stepfather. But somehow, he ended up as her cousin.
Nathaniel picked up the helpless little Serena and held her tightly in his arms. His cold gaze swept over Jasper's grandmother. "What were you trying to do to her just now?"
Jasper's grandmother was terrified by Nathaniel's presence and hurriedly backed away to stand beside her husband and son.
Seeing his wife so frightened, Jasper's grandfather immediately barked at Nathaniel, "What do you think you're doing? Scaring an old woman? With that ridiculous red hair, you look like nothing but a thug. No wonder that kid beats up his classmates. Seems like it runs in the family!"
"Oh?" At that moment, someone stepped out from behind Nathaniel, where he had been completely hidden by his six-foot-three frame. It was Byron, leaning on his cane. "And whose family are you saying is no good?"
Jasper's grandfather recognized Byron right away. In fact, there wasn't a single person in Harrowfell's upper circles who didn't know him.
"M-Mr. Beaumont?" The moment Jasper's grandfather saw Byron, his previously upright posture shrank just a little. "I was talking about that redhead and the kid he's holding. But by the way, what are you doing here?"
Even now, Jasper's grandfather still hadn't realized how serious the situation was.
After all, this was just an above-average kindergarten. He didn't think the Beaumont family's child would be attending here. Besides, as far as he knew, the Beaumont family didn't have any kids of kindergarten age.
What he didn't see was that his son beside him was already drenched in cold sweat.
Byron let out a cold chuckle and walked over to Nathaniel, tapping him with his cane. "This redhead is my grandson."
Jasper's grandfather went speechless. Jasper's father broke out in a cold sweat.
Then, Byron put down his cane and held Serena's little hand in his own. "And this little girl he's holding was born by my daughter."
Jasper's grandfather's eyes widened behind his brown-tinted glasses. Stammering, he asked with a forced smile, "B-But I never heard that you have a daughter."
Everyone thought Byron didn't have a daughter. They thought, 'Even if he has, his daughter'd be in her fifties by now. How could Byron possibly have a granddaughter this young?'
Byron sneered, "Oh? Seems like you know a lot about my family."
Jasper's grandfather felt a chill down his spine and quickly waved his hands in a nervous laugh. "Oh no, no. It's just common knowledge; that's all."
Byron's sharp gaze swept over him. "If you're so informed, then you should know that I recently found my long-lost niece. This little girl is my niece's daughter—my granddaughter."
Holding Serena in his arms, Nathaniel sighed as he listened to his grandfather's words. The sheer misery and frustration he felt was huge.
To this day, Nathaniel still couldn't fully accept that Paisley had become his cousin. And even more so, he couldn't accept that this little squirt in his arms was his cousin.
Finally, Jasper's father snapped out of his shock and forced a smile as he approached Nathaniel. "Mr. Beaumont, it's been a while. How are you?"
Jasper's father was just an ordinary member of Nathaniel's club. He had joined with the sole purpose of getting closer to Nathaniel.
After all, Nathaniel's position in the Beaumont family was at its peak right now. Byron valued him greatly and took him everywhere.
It was clear that Nathaniel was being groomed as the next heir to the Beaumont family.
Nathaniel was a whole head taller than Jasper's dad. He looked down at the man and said coldly, "How am I? I am not fine. My cousin got scared bad, my heart's bad, and I feel bad."
Byron glared at Nathaniel in frustration. He thought, 'This brat—if he had paid more attention to his studies back in school, he wouldn't be saying such weird sentences now. I'm so embarrassed.'
"Well—" Jasper's dad wiped the sweat off his forehead. "But it was your—" He glanced at Serena and said, "Your cousin hit my son first. We only have one child, and we treasure him dearly. But today, your cousin gave him a nosebleed. That's why my family got worked up."
Nathaniel scoffed, "A bunch of grown-ups ganging up on a kid, and you think you have a point? If something happened, why couldn't you wait for the kid's guardian to deal with it?" He shot back immediately.
"Besides, my sister is a well-behaved and sensible kid. She wouldn't just hit someone for no reason. Your son must've been asking for it."
At that moment, Ivan, who had been standing quietly on the side, finally spoke up, "Jasper and a few other boys were bullying Rena first.
"They said she didn't have a dad, that her mom was the nanny, and that she was worthless. They kept saying it over and over. That's why Rena lost her temper and threw the ball at Jasper."
"What—" Jasper's dad broke out in a cold sweat.
"See? Told you your son was asking for it." Nathaniel looked down at Jasper's dad with a judging stare.
Under Nathaniel's intense gaze, Jasper's dad felt uneasy. Finally, he gritted his teeth, marched over to Jasper, grabbed him, and smacked his bottom. "That's for talking nonsense! That's for bullying a girl! Is this what I've been teaching you?"
