To make sure the sports day could go on without any further delays, as soon as Sheela's performance ended, Paisley had Nathaniel take her home.
"Why me?" Nathaniel complained.
Paisley just gave him a calm, side-eyed glance, and he immediately caved. Well, there was no helping it. Among all the adults here, he had the lowest seniority.
"Not just Nathaniel. The rest of you need to leave too," Paisley said firmly.
Tyson frowned, "Yeah, anyone who's not directly involved should go. Max and I will stay. We're family."
"You too," Paisley cut him off before he could finish.
"Paisy?" Tyson looked at her in confusion.
He had pushed aside so many things and rushed all the way from Montera just to be here for his granddaughter's sports day. And now she was telling him to leave.
For the first time in his life, Tyson felt utterly wronged. But Paisley wasn't backing down. She started ushering everyone away. "Go home. All of you."
Then, seeing the obvious hurt in Tyson's eyes, she softened her tone. "You all caused a huge scene just now. If you stay any longer, the event won't be able to continue properly."
She was right. This was supposed to be a fun little event for kids and their parents, but these people had turned it into some kind of grand spectacle.
If even one of them stayed, the school would have to treat them like VIPs, and the other parents wouldn't be able to relax. That would completely ruin the casual and fun atmosphere of the event.
Paisley knew better than anyone how much Serena had been looking forward to this. She had been practicing every single day for the activities they signed up for.
Tyson understood her concerns, of course. But he had really been looking forward to this. He had even planned to surprise his daughter and granddaughter.
Thinking about it, he didn't even know who to blame. In the end, all he could do was turn his disappointment and regret into frustration—directing it straight at Jasper's parents.
When it came down to it, this was all their fault. If they had just raised their kid properly and taught him not to bully Rena, none of this would have happened.
Under Tyson's glare, Jasper's entire family started trembling. It wasn't just Tyson staring them down. Aside from Paisley, every single one of Serena's relatives was glaring at them too. One after another, these were all people they couldn't afford to offend.
In the end, under Paisley's insistence, everyone had no choice but to leave the kindergarten. Lauren was especially reluctant. She hadn't even gotten a proper chance to hug her little granddaughter. In the end, Reginald and Kayla had to take her by both arms and lead her away.
Lauren had already upset Paisley with her earlier words. If she kept pushing, it would only backfire. At the end of the day, their only real goal was to mend their relationship with Paisley and Serena.
Meanwhile, Byron, Nathaniel, and Sheela had already left. Dominick was the last to go. He stood in the hallway, his eyes lingering on Max, who was still talking to Paisley.
"Dad and I are heading to the villa. Let's have dinner together tonight," said Max.
"Okay," Paisley responded.
Watching Max pat Paisley's upper arm, Dominick clenched his jaw. He didn't relax until Max finally stepped back and moved away from her.
"Dad." Grayson walked over and grabbed Dominick's hand. "Aunt asked me to check why you're still here."
As he spoke, he peeked inside the room. Honestly, he really wanted to stay and join his sister for the event.
Just then, Max walked over. He barely glanced at Dominick before turning his warm gaze to Grayson. "Sonny, you're still here?"
"Yeah." Grayson nodded. "I came to find Dad."
"Oh." Max glanced at Dominick out of the corner of his eye. Even with such a brief look, he could feel the sharp, unfriendly stare coming from the man.
Max smirked slightly, and then knelt to Grayson's level. "Your grandpa's here. Want to come have dinner with us tonight?"
Grayson's eyes lit up. He really wanted to go, but he hesitantly looked up at Dominick, waiting for his response. Dominick was just about to refuse. But then he saw the hopeful look in his son's eyes and swallowed the words back down.
"I'll drop you off later," he finally said. That was the biggest compromise he could make.
"No need," Max said casually. "You can just leave Sonny with me. I'll take him back to Paisy's villa, or maybe we can ask Paisy if he can stay at the kindergarten and join his mom and sister for the event."
The second Grayson heard he might be able to stay and join his mom and Rena, his excitement was written all over his face. Well, of course. He was just a kid. He couldn't hide his emotion.
Dominick saw everything—every bit of his son's reaction. Suddenly, alarm bells started ringing in his head, and a sense of crisis hit him hard.
He instinctively tightened his grip on Grayson's hand. "Sonny is my son. If he wants to see his mom, I'll take him. No need for anyone else to step in."
Max chuckled at his response, "But I'm not 'anyone else.' I'm his uncle. Right, Sonny?"
Grayson could sense the growing tension. But right now, his desire to stay with his mom and sister outweighed everything else. He nodded. "Yeah, Dad. He's my uncle."
He thought he hadn't lied—Max was his uncle. His and Rena's uncle, no doubt about it.
Max raised an eyebrow and looked straight at Dominick, deciding to lay it all out. "Dominick, you really don't need to be so guarded against me."
If he truly wanted to do something, Dominick wouldn't be able to stop him because he had an undeniable advantage—he was Paisley's brother. With the entire Godard family backing him, he could gain Paisley's trust without any reservations.
Dominick let out a sneer, "Drop the act. Don't think I don't know what you're up to."
"Oh? Then tell me, what am I up to?" Max asked.
"Sonny, go wait for me at the entrance," Dominick said, instead of answering Max right away.
"Oh." The light in Grayson's eyes dimmed slightly. It seemed his father didn't agree to let him stay.
Once Grayson had walked away, Dominick took a step forward, his cold gaze locking onto Max. "You like Paisley. You're using my two kids. You're getting close to them, winning their favor, just to drive a wedge between them and me—so you can get closer to Paisley."
"Is that so?" Max didn't look away, meeting Dominick's gaze head-on.
"Isn't it?" Dominick shot back coldly.
This time, Max chuckled, "So you knew all along. If you knew everything, then why couldn't you see through Marissa back then?"
Dominick was momentarily speechless. Max arched an eyebrow and blinked slightly. "Turns out, as long as the pain isn't your own, it's easy to turn a blind eye to things, huh?"
He took a couple of steps to the side, admiring the children's drawings on the wall. "You say you love Paisy, yet back then, you ignored her suffering. Now, you can see through my intentions, but you couldn't see through Ms. Prescott's back then?"
With that, he turned to look at Dominick. "After all, what I'm doing now is exactly what she did back then, isn't it?"
