Linda's face changed drastically. "Why? Dom, Dom, please." Linda tried to kneel again, hoping to soften Dominick's heart.
Dominick grabbed her shoulders, stopping her from kneeling. "Mrs. Prescott, go back. Don't come here again, and don't contact me anymore." With that, he took Grayson's hand and walked away.
Linda and Stella were escorted out of Vanderbilt Manor. It was called escorted, but the butler and servants' attitudes weren't exactly polite. At that moment, the old and young deeply felt what it was like to experience the cruelty of the world.
When Marissa was still living with the Vanderbilt family, no one would have dared to treat them this way. Linda could only stand at the door of Vanderbilt Manor and cry.
When Linda saw Julian, who had come to pick up Dominick for work, it was as if she saw a glimmer of hope again. But before she could even speak, Julian beat her to it.
"I'll arrange for you to meet Marissa and help her find a lawyer, but that's all I can do," she said.
Linda nodded weakly. She knew this was the last act of kindness Julian could offer.
When Linda finally saw Marissa at the detention center, she was barely recognizable after being subjected to the harsh conditions. After living a life of luxury for so long, it was impossible for her to endure such hardship.
Seeing Linda come alone, Marissa instantly became hysterical. "Why are you the only one here? Where is everyone else? Did you go and beg the Vanderbilt family?"
Linda broke down in tears. "I did! I begged everyone I could, but it's no use. This time, it's over."
"Mom, you have to help me! I'll die in this place! There are crazy people here, and they keep scaring me!"
Marissa's eyes darted around wildly, clearly reflecting the torment she had endured in the past few days. Someone must have been giving her a hard time inside.
"It's Paisley! It has to be Paisley sending people to scare me! Mom, go beg the Vanderbilt family. Ask them to help me!" Marissa stared at Linda like a ghost.
Linda was utterly terrified by her daughter's appearance. "Marissa, I told you before that you and Dom would never work out. Why did you insist on doing things your way? Your father hoped you'd bring glory to this family. Look at you now!
"When you and Jeremy got into trouble, Stella's mother ran away. The Prescott relatives refuse to even acknowledge me. Now it's just me raising Stella alone. What am I supposed to do moving forward?"
"Enough with the useless talk! Go and beg someone, think of something! I can't stay here. I need to get out!" In just a short time, Marissa was already losing her sanity.
"There's no way. There's really no way!" Linda's emotions flared up. "You need to behave and work on reforming yourself in here. Try to get out as soon as possible."
"Time's up." The guard signaled for Linda to leave.
Marissa's emotions finally exploded. She pounded on the glass like a madwoman. "I can't stay here! Let me out! Get me out of here!"
But it was all in vain. In the end, she was led back behind thick iron doors. What awaited her now was a painful and grueling life in prison.
Meanwhile, the Sullivan family wasn't faring much better.
Ever since they were kicked out of the hospital during their last visit to see Paul, they hadn't been able to contact Dominick or his assistant.
Brittany had repeatedly called Julian, who initially brushed her off with excuses about being busy. Eventually, he stopped answering her calls altogether.
The Sullivan family's contract with the Vanderbilt family was nearing its renewal deadline, and the next quarter's agreement had yet to be signed.
In previous years, the Vanderbilt Group's project manager would proactively reach out to finalize the contracts. But this time, there had been no word. When Gregory tried reaching out, he was met with vague replies, saying they were waiting for instructions from above.
And "instructions from above" could only mean Dominick. It wasn't just the Sullivan family facing setbacks. Brittany was dealing with her own problems.
First, the male and female lead actors, as well as other supporting cast members, abruptly quit her drama project, causing production to grind to a halt.
As the lead actress, Brittany became the target of ridicule online. To prove herself, she urgently needed the drama to resume production. But at this critical juncture, she couldn't reach Julian, let alone Dominick.
"What's going on? Weren't they so friendly before? Why aren't they answering the phone now?" Christina asked anxiously.
On one hand, the family business was at stake, and on the other, her daughter's budding celebrity career was on the line. Both of these relied heavily on Dominick!
"Did we do something to upset Mr. Vanderbilt?" Christina asked.
"I didn't do anything! I haven't even met Mr. Vanderbilt in person. All I've ever done is communicate through his assistant," Brittany said, feeling wronged.
Everyone kept saying Dominick had a thing for her, but she hadn't even seen him face-to-face. She only ever dealt with his assistant, and now even the assistant was giving her the cold shoulder.
When she finally became Dominick's woman, she'd make sure that assistant paid for his attitude.
Gregory couldn't make sense of it either. "The projects we handle for the Vanderbilt Group are all low-level ones. These don't even need Mr. Vanderbilt's approval, so how could we have offended him?"
In truth, Gregory, as a contractor, didn't even have the qualifications to meet Dominick, let alone offend him.
"Then what's going on? We can't just keep waiting like this. The projects aren't progressing, and Brittany's show isn't moving forward either," Christina said, clearly agitated.
Gregory frowned deeply. This kind of passive waiting was unbearable.
The Sullivan family had made a lot of money recently, thanks to Dominick's generosity. Not only had they turned their losses into profits, but they had also elevated their status significantly.
Having grown used to such smooth sailing, Gregory couldn't imagine going back to the struggles of their past.
"We can't give up on Mr. Vanderbilt, but we also can't put all our eggs in one basket," Gregory said thoughtfully.
"What do you mean?"
"We need an alliance!" Gregory's eyes lit up as he came to a decision.
"An alliance? Dad, who are you planning to marry me off to? I'm not getting married!" Brittany reacted dramatically.
"Exactly! Brittany can't just marry anyone. She's someone Mr. Vanderbilt has his eye on!" Christina chimed in. Being Dominick's woman, even as a mistress, was better than marrying just anyone.
Gregory smirked. "I'm not talking about Brittany. We still have another daughter!"
Christina's eyes sparkled. "You mean Paisley!"
Gregory nodded. "Yes, Paisley. She's not great at anything and is far behind Brittany in every way, but at least she's got decent looks. I'll find her a suitable marriage match in the next couple of days."
