The next day, I arrived at the island to find Marcus and Sophia already there.
They'd brought along reporters from every major media outlet in the city, plus all the big names in medical circles.
I almost laughed.
What kid's birthday needed this kind of audience?
They were all here to watch Marcus force the Winston family heiress to apologize to his mistress.
When Marcus saw me, he rushed over and looked behind me.
"Liv, where's Emma? Kids shouldn't be stuck in hospitals all the time—she needs fresh air..."
I swallowed the stabbing pain and looked at him.
"Emma will be here soon."
Marcus didn't push it. He stuck me at some random table and went back to helping Sophia with decorations.
The party started on schedule.
Sophia took Connor's hand and walked onto the stage.
When she grabbed the microphone, her eyes found mine—pure hostility.
"Before Connor's birthday celebration begins, there's something important to address. My mentor's wife insisted on apologizing for yesterday's incident. As my mentor's student, I couldn't refuse..."
As I walked past Marcus toward the stage, he grabbed my hand and whispered in my ear.
"Liv, be good and apologize today. I'll love you even more for it..."
I yanked my hand away and took the microphone from Sophia.
Facing thousands of media cameras, I spoke slowly.
"I'm here to apologize. I was wrong..."
The crowd erupted.
The Winston heiress publicly apologizing? Unthinkable.
Marcus was practically vibrating with excitement below the stage.
Sophia couldn't hide her smugness.
"It's okay, Mrs. Kane. Connor and I forgive you..."
"I was wrong to trust Marcus Kane, that beast! He claims to worship his wife, but he's been screwing his student!"
"He claims to be devoted to his daughter, but he killed our child to save his mistress's son!"
"I was wrong! I hate myself for being blind enough to trust a man who murdered my baby!"
Sophia froze on stage.
Marcus charged up from below, grabbed my collar, and screamed like a madman.
"You lying bitch! What the hell are you saying?! Emma's coming soon! When she gets here, she'll tell everyone how much she loves her daddy!"
Thousands of camera flashes exploded around us.
Marcus's face was livid as he shook me violently.
"I want to see Emma right now! Call her! Now! I want my precious daughter to clear my name!"
The moment he finished speaking, helicopter rotors thundered overhead.
Seconds later, Dad walked onto the stage and showed an urn in his hands.
"Emma's here."
