He kept replaying the video, over and over.
The moment it sank in, he opened his mouth to question me.
But before he could speak, something else clicked.
He spun around and grabbed Connor's arm, demanding answers.
"Connor, didn't you tell me you texted Emma that night?! Were you lying?!"
Marcus's harsh tone made Connor burst into tears.
Sophia quickly stepped in and grabbed Marcus's hand.
"Marcus, why are you taking it out on a child? Kids don't lie! Who can prove that's actually Emma in that urn? Don't let them fool you!"
Sophia's words brought the doubt back to Marcus's eyes.
He rushed toward Dad and snatched the urn from his hands.
When he saw the ashes inside, he immediately turned to me.
"Olivia Winston, Sophia's right! How do you know these ashes are Emma's?! This could be any random pile of ash you found!"
Dad couldn't hide his rage anymore.
He gestured to the mercenaries he'd brought.
But I quickly stepped in front of him.
Even if he died today, I wanted Marcus to understand exactly why.
I took the urn from Marcus and handed it back to Dad.
Then I smiled bitterly at Marcus.
"Marcus, if you come back with me right now and kneel at Emma's memorial to apologize, I might let you live."
"But if you keep listening to that bitch and refuse to face reality, you know what my family is capable of. You'll die without a trace."
Marcus shuddered involuntarily.
Others might not know Dad's methods, but he did.
Three years ago, when Emma was diagnosed with kidney failure, a servant made one comment:
"That kid looks cursed to die young!"
That night, the servant's entire family was found dead in a mass grave.
Marcus hadn't slept a wink that night.
He'd always been a coward at heart.
Hearing my threat, the unease in his eyes intensified.
"Liv..."
"Marcus, don't listen to her! You've lived under the Winston family's threats for years. All these reporters are here—this is your chance to break free! Don't waste it!"
Sophia cut him off.
Right after she spoke, Connor chimed in.
"Yeah, Uncle Marcus, I support you!"
The mother and son seemed to give Marcus real courage.
He looked at the eager reporters below, cleared his throat, and faced me.
"Olivia Winston, show me your proof! I'll accept whatever consequences come!"
I used to think Marcus just craved the admiration in his students' eyes.
I understood it as vanity born from childhood insecurity.
But I never imagined his true nature was this disgusting.
I'd lost all patience with the man in front of me.
I looked at him and let out a cold laugh.
"Fine. Remember how righteous you sound right now."
I pulled out my phone and found the OR surveillance footage, holding it up to the cameras.
Soon, the footage appeared on the big screen.
As everyone turned to look, I hit play.
