I instinctively dodged to the side.
Liam missed and fell heavily to the ground, immediately bursting into tears with a loud "waa."
That cry was like a whip across my heart.
Maternal instinct still made my heart tighten, and I instinctively wanted to turn and help him up.
It was in that moment of distraction.
Lilith, like a venomous snake, lightning-fast snatched the velvet box from my hand.
"Let me see what precious treasure is worth protecting so much by a thief like you!"
She raised her eyebrows smugly, her tone full of mockery.
"Give it back!"
She actually used the child to distract me! I immediately realized what happened, furious, and reached out to grab it back.
But Felix blocked my way, those eyes that once made me infatuated now looking at me coldly, as if I were an unreasonable madwoman.
"Yara! Lilith is just taking a look. What do you want to do, hit someone?!"
"Felix, if you're sick, go get treatment. Don't block me!"
Lilith took the opportunity to open the box.
The next second, her breathing stopped abruptly, her eyes showing undisguised shock and jealousy.
In the box lay a ring quietly, with each gemstone on the band refracting brilliant light in the afternoon sun.
Any single one was worth millions.
Felix glanced at it and was equally stunned. He looked at me and stammered out a word: "You..."
Before he could finish, Liam had already jumped up from the ground screaming.
"It's stolen! This ring must be stolen! I knew it, you thief never change! You stole Auntie Lilith's life and you're still stealing things. Thank goodness daddy divorced you!"
He ran to Felix's side, hugged his leg, and looked up crying:
"Daddy! Call the police to arrest her! I don't want a thief as my mother! I hate her!"
The last trace of warmth in my heart completely sank into an ice cellar.
That moment of softness just now seemed like feeding a dog.
At such a young age, how could he be so unable to distinguish right from wrong, turning black into white?
Lilith immediately found a new angle to attack me. Her eyes rolled, and she pointed at the nearby Sinclair family jewelry store, her voice sharp and piercing:
"Felix! Look! She must have just stolen this from the Sinclair family's store! Our Smith family is preparing to negotiate cooperation with the Sinclair family. If they find out we're connected to a thief, the cooperation will definitely fall through!"
Felix's face instantly became extremely ugly. He turned to me abruptly, fury burning in his eyes:
"Yara! Are you crazy?! You could steal from anyone, but you dare steal from the Sinclair family?! Are you trying to destroy me, destroy the Smith family?!"
He grabbed me, almost dragging me forward.
"I order you to return the item immediately and go in there to kneel and apologize! If you dare delay the cooperation between the Smith and Sinclair families because of you, my ex-wife, I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life in prison!"
I stumbled from his pulling but laughed coldly.
"Felix, you're just my ex-husband. What right do you have to order me around?"
"This is a society ruled by law, this is New York. Do you really think you can cover the sky with one hand?"
"I think you're the one feeling guilty, that's why you're shouting so loud!"
Lilith shook the ring in her hand and walked to a sewer manhole cover by the roadside, looking at me with the most malicious expression.
"That's right, this is New York, we can't do much."
"But someone can."
"Tell me, if the CEO of Sinclair Family Group knew you stole their priceless ring and lost it so you can't return it, what would happen?"
With that, she flicked her wrist, dangling the ring over the sewer manhole cover.
