The phone screen lit up, showing the name "Liam."
Seeing this long-absent caller ID, my heart still felt like it was pierced by a needle, aching densely.
I instinctively wanted to hang up, but then thought better of it. It was time to make a clean break.
I swiped to answer but didn't speak.
There was silence on the other end, only his suppressed, rapid breathing could be heard.
After a long while, he finally squeezed out a question thick with tears.
"You... why do you have a fiancé?"
His voice was full of the grievance of being betrayed.
"Aren't you a thief? Aren't you a bad woman? Besides me and daddy, who else would love you?"
This question was childish and ridiculous.
I simply answered calmly:
"Liam, whether I'm a thief or not, your father and your grandparents from the Allens family know better than anyone."
"They lied to you because they needed a reason to feel justified in treating me badly, so you would join them in driving me out to make room for your Aunt Lilith."
"But none of this concerns you anymore. Didn't you personally say you didn't want me, this dirty woman, as your mother? Didn't you make your choice?"
On the other end of the phone, he burst into tears with a loud "waa."
"I regret it! Mommy, I regret it... After you left, no one reads me bedtime stories anymore. Daddy, auntie, grandpa and grandma, none of them know what I like to eat!"
"Come home with me... Mommy, I miss you. I want you to cook for me and take me to the amusement park..."
He cried breathlessly.
In the past, hearing him cry like this would have broken my heart.
But now, I calmly took a breath:
"Liam, you need to be responsible for what you said."
He sobbed uncontrollably, just kept calling me: "Mommy... Mommy..."
My heart still ached finely and densely.
I remembered when he first called me "mommy" with unclear pronunciation, I was so happy I cried all night.
But I also remembered him standing beside Lilith, looking at me like I was garbage.
I would never look back again.
I sighed softly, using my last bit of patience to advise him:
"You're already a big boy. Learn to distinguish right from wrong yourself in the future. Don't believe everything people tell you."
With that, I resolutely hung up and permanently blocked this number.
Just as I was about to put down my phone, another unknown number called.
I answered with a frown, and Felix's eager, ingratiating voice came through:
"Yara... is that you?"
"How have you been... lately?"
I was almost amused by his audacity.
"Felix, have you forgotten how you treated me this morning?"
"What gives you the nerve to ask how I'm doing?"
He was momentarily speechless, and the phone went silent for a few seconds.
Then he began explaining urgently, his voice full of regret.
"I was wrong, I was really wrong! I was a complete bastard today! I shouldn't have believed Lilith's lies, I shouldn't have laid hands on you..."
"Can you... not get married? Give me another chance, please?"
