"That you have no wolf, tell them before it's too late." I couldn't shake off Maribel's words, no matter how hard I tried to focus on her sweet pancakes. Every bite, every swallow reminded me that she knew my secret. The fork felt heavy, and the knife trembled in my shaking hand.
"Is something wrong, Delaney?" Elias asked, making me snap my eyes to him. His gaze was directed at my plate and hands.
"Um, no," I lied, forcing myself to bend over for a piece of pancake. Maribel watched silently, enjoying her breakfast as if she hadn't just dropped a bombshell on me.
"But you have barely eaten; your hands are trembling," he pointed out, his brows creasing.
"Cut the girl some slack. She just witnessed someone dying." Maribel finally broke her silence, her defence making me question my judgement.
"She is an alpha's daughter, set to take over her father's position when the time comes. How will she rule a pack if she can't handle the sight of death?" Elias asked, his voice calm.
"More like rule without a wolf," I mumbled under my breath, dropping the knife and the fork with a clang on the plate.
"What did you say?" Elias pressed, leaning over the table.
"You have no right to determine how I should handle whatever happened out there. And ruling my pack is not your fucking business," I breathed, pushing my chair back. I stood and headed for the door, my lips pressed firmly together. Yes, he was right, but it didn't cut deep any less, especially since I knew taking over from my father was off the table. What alpha ruled over other werewolves without a wolf?
"You'd be dead now if you had been addressing the alpha kings like that," Elias retorted back as I got to the kitchen door.
"It's a good thing you are not an alpha king then," I whispered, looking at him over my shoulder, then at Maribel.
The moment I stepped out of that kitchen, I ran up the flight of stairs to the second floor in my room. I picked up my phone from the bedside table and dialled my dad's phone number. I couldn't stop pacing as it rang, every second that ticked by without his response making my pulse skyrocket.
"You have reach—" I didn't wait for the damn voicemail; I hung up and hurled the phone across the room.
"I can't stay here," I mumbled, running my hands through my hair.
"Not when Maribel knows the truth," I added, trying so hard to convince myself. At that moment, all I wanted was to get back home where my dad understood me. The guards were few, so it would be easier to escape, I thought. If I could get past the gate with a lie that I needed to go for a walk, then I could find a way to get to the town capital.
Without even a second thought or a change of clothes, I walked out. It was easy to get out of the mansion, with Elias and Maribel still in the kitchen. The compound was quiet, and nobody was in sight.
"I didn't know you were heading out," Rick spoke when I got to the gate, eyeing me.
"Me neither." I cleared my throat. "I just thought that because I didn't manage to go for the run with the rest earlier, I could just do it now," I lied smoothly, looking back at the mansion just to confirm Elias wasn't following me.
"You can't," he simply stated, crossing his arms across his chest.
"What do you mean by 'I can't'?" I spread my arms in the air, tilting my head.
"Alpha kings' orders. You can't step outside of this gate unless you are accompanied by either one of them."
"What!" I took a step back, chuckling in disbelief.
"Look, they are possessive of their escorts, especially Ronan. They must have hit the jackpot with you because normally escorts stay for a day, but they don't even want you to leave..." He licked his lower lip, his hungry eyes roaming over my body once again.
"Don't worry though, normally we are free to have fun with them once the alpha kings are sexually satisfied," Rick went on to add without any shame whatsoever, smirking as if what he had just said was funny. How the hell could I allow men who fucked around to affect my feelings so much?
"Shut the fuck up!" I raised my voice while I spread my hand in the air.
"Do I look like a fucking escort to you?" I seethed, glaring at Rick, who seemed unbothered.
"Oh come on. I saw the way Elias defended you. Has he already called dibs on you?" I didn't let him add another word, because I closed the small distance between us and delivered a slap across his filthy face. He didn't move, just stood and stared at me, his eyes narrowing, gleaming with fiery anger.
"Feisty, I like it," he spoke after seconds in a raspy voice. I watched as he tilted his head and then stilled, obviously communicating through the mind link.
"The alpha kings are here," he simply stated, then walked over to the gate and opened it. I stood with my legs apart, head held high, as Ronan and Kai walked in, still dressed in their workout outfits.
"What are you doing out here?" Kai coldly asked, stopping a step away from me.
"So I am really a prisoner," I concluded, nodding to myself.
"I don't see any cuffs on you, little mouse," Ronan chimed in, his usual playful tone clipped.
"Turn around and walk back to the house or—"
"Or what, Alpha Kai?" I lifted my chin.
"Uh oh, this is not a good time to poke the bear, Delaney," Ronan stated.
"I do not like repeating myself," Kai stated in a low voice, one that sent chills down my spine.
"You kidnap me, forbid the guards from letting me out of the damn compound, and now you want to order me around?" I sassily spoke, holding his damn gaze.
One minute he was looking at me, the next he was charging towards me, and before I could react, he lifted me up and threw me up on his shoulders.
"Put me down, you big bad wolf!" My face was close to his tight ass, my fists bumping on his back to let me free.
"Maybe spanking will teach you manners," he stated, while his brother followed behind us, hollering like a fool.
