Alpha Ronan
"A mate?" Delaney enquired, pressing her lips together with a small frown.
"Yes, she uuum—"
"It's not your place to tell her," Kai cut off Delaney's dad. Talking about our mate was a sore subject for both of us, but while I used sex to distract me, Kai stayed away from women.
"Were you even going to tell me?" Delaney turned to us, crossing her arms. Her eyes had significant swelling, a reminder of how inhuman we had been towards her.
"We would have...eventually," I replied, my eyes involuntarily roaming over her body. I could tell that she hated wearing the tiny clothes we had stocked in her closet. She was dressed in black sweatpants and a white shirt that outlined her nipples really well. The thought of touching them, of feeling her perky boobs, had my manhood stirring beneath my slacks.
"I can't keep my eyes off her boobs," Kai mind-linked, clearing his throat out loud.
"I know the struggle." I chuckled, pushing the urge to adjust my cock away. I knew the peversive thoughts were not good at a time like that, but I couldn't help myself.
"Are you even listening to a word I just said?" Delaney's outburst pulled us back into the issue at hand.
"Anyway, whether you had a mate or not doesn't concern me." I didn't miss the sneer as she talked about our former mate.
"You can have her all to yourselves now that I am going back home." She beckoned Elias, who stood beside Maribel, observing. I was glad they had stood by her when we turned against her, but that didn't stop a pang in my chest from forming as she gave them her attention.
"We can't have her when she is dead!" My brother yelled, a vein in his forehead popping. I took a deep breath, the images of our mate flashing behind my eyes.
"Oh," Delaney shrugged. "Did you kill her like you wanted to kill me?" She mocked, heading to her father's Ford.
"Delaney—" Kai started, taking a step forward.
"Don't," she bit out. "I don't want to hear any excuses; I am going home." Her voice was steady, but I could hear the slight crack in her voice.
"She is going home," Thorne backed her up, giving her a nod. The man we had called our friend now shielded her from us, and with good cause.
I opened my mouth to speak, to plead with her, to explain, but she cut me off before any word could leave my mouth. I swallowed hard, Kai placing his hand over my shoulder.
"I don't care about whatever this is." She gestured between the three of us, her head held high, but moisture shimmering on the surface of her eyes.
"Or whatever we are," she added, taking in a deep breath. "I reject it," she spat, blinking back the tears.
My wolf recoiled in protest while Kai let out a sound between a groan and a whimper, clutching his chest. I felt like every breath had been sucked out of my lungs, leaving me gasping for as little as I could get. Delaney turned, but she took only one step before letting out a scream, bending.
"It's the mate bond," her dad panicked, supporting her by holding her arm.
"It hurts," she cried out, and so did Kai and I. The rejection, even though it hadn't been said properly enough to sever the bond even before it was sealed, sent a gruelling ache in our bodies.
"You can't do this, Delaney." Maribel reprimanded in a sharp voice.
Delaney scoffed weakly, gaining enough balance to stand upright. "I just did."
"No, you didn't; that's not how rejections are done," Delaney snapped.
"You are encouraging her," Kai accused Maribel.
"Shut up. We wouldn't be here had you just given the innocent girl a fair trial," Maribel reprimanded, making Kai and I recoil back. My wolf whimpered, accusing me of denying him our mate and hurting her.
"Now Delaney. You literally can't reject them because the prophecy warned about it." Maribel's voice softened.
"They are twice as old as she is; they are my age. How can she not reject them?" Thorne scoffed, throwing his hands in the air.
"This again Maribel? First you asked me to tell them that I have no wolf if the prophecy were to come to pass," Delaney began, her nostrils flaring.
"When they found out, they sentenced me to death without even a second thought. Now that I want to reject them, you bring up the prophecy again?" She threw her hands in the air, her eyes staring at Maribel, who heaved a sigh.
"Come with me, all of you. The trees have ears." Maribel beckoned, going up the front door without a backward glance. I expected Delaney to refuse, but after some persuasion from her dad, she agreed. We trailed in silence behind Maribel, Elias, Delaney and her father. When we settled in, the meditation room filled with an array of bookshelves, she began.
"Like I told you earlier, Delaney, this prophecy has been passed down from generation to generation." Everyone was quiet, including Kai, who was tapping his foot on the floor.
"Long ago, before I was born, a group of witches from the main coven broke away and formed their own. They questioned the effectiveness of pure magic if they still died of old age." As she explained, everyone was quiet, listening.
"So they sought dark magic, which was forbidden, to create immortality. They started engaging in werewolf sacrifices because the blood was believed to be more powerful, enough to add years to their lives. They eventually discovered that the blood of mates, not just any mates, but women from the Lysethia bloodline, is more effective. So they began taking them until none were left and resulted in settling for any mate's blood." She was looking at Delaney, her gaze soft and warm.
"Just skip to the part where I am involved and can't reject my murderers," Delaney interrupted, rolling her eyes.
"When the moonlight is swallowed by blood, the Moon Goddess shall awaken the daughter of fire, the one born of silence, forged by betrayal. She shall walk with no howl until death calls her from within. Bound to the twin suns of storm and steel, together they shall rise to restore balance. Should she fall, then the realms shall be burnt by her flame, and should she rise, then the song of the mate bonds shall be sung again." As Maribel finished, Ayla nodded to herself, biting her lower lip.
"Please make me understand," she said, shaking her legs.
"The witches of dark magic created an imbalance when they sought immortality. You are supposed to bring the balance back with Alpha Kai and Ronan," Maribel explained.
"So let me get this straight," Delaney pressed. "If I reject them, everything collapses?" she asked.
"Yes, everything will burn," Maribel answered, voice barely above a whisper. Delaney took in a deep breath, then buried her face in her hands without saying a word.
