"Please come with us, come back, Delaney," Ronan pleaded, turning his mouth down slightly.
"How about no?" I grunted, pain radiating inside my head as my wolf protested.
"We can't survive without you, our beasts are detaching from us," Kai said, frowning.
I raised my eyebrows, a forced laugh passing between my lips. "So you want me now because you are basically turning into rogues?"
"Delaney," Kai spoke slowly. "We made a terrible mistake. We judged you without thinking."
"Oh yes, you did, and a mere 'sorry' does not make it right," I retorted. Ronan winced, while Kai lowered his eyes.
"Honey, maybe you should sit down and talk," my dad finally joined in, his voice calming, yet with an edge in its tone.
"Dad," I closed my eyes.
"Remember what we just talked about, Del, for your sanity, please. I-I can't lose you," he reminded, squeezing my hand.
"Now that they are standing here, all I can see is the rope dangling in front of my face," I confessed, swallowing past my dry throat. My wolf was pushing incessantly, but I was blocking her. She wasn't there when they dragged me into their car. She wasn't there when I pleaded for them to listen but instead locked me up in the dungeon.
"Alpha Kai," I called, lifting my chin.
"Delaney," he whispered, his usual stern tone dissipating.
I breathed, fighting off a growing lump in my throat. "You told me that I was a disgrace to the werewolf community," I forced the words out, the memory of the coldness in his voice as he said that sending chills down my spine. His gaze darted around the compound, not able to even glance at me.
"And you, Alpha Ronan." I cleared my dry, swollen throat.
"You called me a freak," I whispered, blinking back tears.
"I'm so sorry," he said, coming up the driveway, his brother Kai joining him.
"Stay where you are." I stretched my hand, my pulse increasing as they stopped right before the stairs leading to the front door.
"What would you have done in our position? If you were the alpha king and a mysterious death happened right after you brought a guest over. Then find out that this guest doesn't have a wolf?" Ronan asked, eliciting a chuckle from me.
"You are kidding me, right?"
"Delaney," Dad called.
"No, Dad, don't tell me to stop. We both know you always give pack members a chance in this pack. You brought me up telling me that justice is a process that requires time and proof. I have never seen you punish anyone without evidence," I spoke, swiping my thumb and index finger over my eyelids, forehead furrowed.
"So, Ronan," I turned to him. "I would have asked questions, listened and taken time to deliver a judgement," I answered, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Allow us to make it up to you," Kai pleaded.
"You ordered the guard to torture me, to give me what all murderers deserve." I glared at him, holding my breath.
"He did what?" My dad roared, and for the first time since the alpha kings stepped foot on the compound, his wolf surfaced.
"You know what happens in the dungeons, Thorne," Ronan tried reasoning.
"I know that Delaney didn't deserve all that!" My dad snapped, going down the steps.
"Dad, please don't challenge them," I begged, running after him. I knew that despite being an alpha, he was no match for the alpha kings.
"Listen to Delaney," Kai groaned, his eyes glowing yellow.
"Our wolves are volatile right now. They see you as the person preventing us from being with Delaney. Thorne please step back," Ronan added, his voice deepening, sounding more rough.
I held my dad's hand, trying to pull him back. He wasn't moving an inch, pushing his chest forward and refusing to back down.
"If you hurt him, I will never forgive you!" I stood in front of him, between him and the alphas whose beasts were beginning to take over. They both recoiled, their wolves retreating. I knew they wanted my wolf; just as she was clawing for contact with them, threatening them would calm them down.
"Honey, I—"
Before my dad could finish his statement, blinding pain spread in my head, leaving my ears ringing. It was like I was staring right into reality as a ring of fire formed, circling werewolves. They were running inside the circle, looking for an escape, while screaming my name. I could hear loud laughs outside the fire, mocking me, calling me a failure. At the centre were Alpha Ronan and Kai, hugging me as I helplessly watched the chaos unfold, right before the fire engulfed us and burnt us.
"Delaney!" My dad's voice pulled me back into reality, and only then did I realise that I had been frozen. I drew in a sharp breath, panting as air filled my burning lungs.
"What is it? You were screaming, frozen on the ground for seconds," Kai pointed out, his face almost level with mine. I blinked, making sense of my surroundings. The sharp pain in my head had subsided; only a throb now was left.
"Talk to us," Ronan encouraged, his voice soothing, even though I did not want to admit.
"I..." I couldn't explain what I had seen without sounding like a complete fool, detached completely from reality.
"I want to be left alone," I finally managed to utter, ignoring their calls as I ran back inside and locked myself in my room. Whatever I had seen had felt so real, so much so that I had felt the flames burning us, the pain in my body as the fire consumed us. I had felt the pain in the screams of the werewolves as they looked at me for help.
"Am I running mad?" I asked out loud, my question being met with silence in my room.
"Oh god, I can't be a rogue," I panicked, my knees sinking on the carpet, my hands clutching my head.
