Delaney
The next day rolled in quickly, given the fact that we had gotten to the estate after midnight. Nyra had slept in the opposite wing, where Elias and Maribel resided. By the time I woke up, cleaned up and went down to the kitchen, it was already 8 a.m.
"She finally graces us with her presence," Maribel teased as I walked in. Nyra was already up, seated on a raised stool, her elbows placed on the kitchen island in the middle of the kitchen. Her and Maribel seemed to be getting along just fine, even though it was Nyra's first day in the alpha kings' estate. On the countertop was a tray of cookies, unpeeled ripe bananas, buttered toasts and sausages.
"It's not my problem you couldn't get enough sleep," I teased back, pulling a stool beside Nyra. Her hair was unkempt, eyes bloodshot as if she hadn't slept or had been crying.
"What is it, Nyra?" I asked, turning to face her. She hung her face, heaving a small sigh. I waited for her to speak, but she instead ran her hand over her head, combing her fingers through her messy hair.
Maribel chuckled. "Come on, Nyra, tell her what you told me," she encouraged, raising my curiosity.
"The room that I slept in smelt like sandalwood. I couldn't catch any sleep, Delaney," Nyra breathed, swirling a cup of coffee.
"So let me get this straight. You didn't sleep because of a mere scent?" I fought off a smile, glancing at Maribel.
Nyra pouted. "This is why I didn't want to tell you. I knew you would make fun of me."
"It's just that I haven't smelt sandalwood since I came into this mansion. They don't grow the tree in here, do they?" The last part was directed at Maribel, whose lips were stretched into the widest smile. She picked up two cups, poured coffee and walked over to the kitchen island.
"To make matters worse, the room that I slept in was where the smell was the most concentrated. The beddings, the bathroom, every fucking thing in there was dizzying me." Nyra huffed, tapping her fingers on the countertop.
"Don't mind Delaney. Days ago she was complaining about the scent of lavender and cinnamon," Maribel reminded me, pulling the stool beside me.
"Oh god," I whispered, raising my hand to cover my mouth.
"Guess which room she slept in," Maribel stated, pushing a cup of coffee in front of me. The scent wafted in my nostrils, making my mouth water.
"Why does it matter? It won't change anything." Nyra took a sip of her coffee, her eyes fixed on the same spot.
I chuckled. "Oh yes, it will," I corrected, shrugging.
"You know what? I am going outside for fresh air because I feel like I am going crazy." Nyra got off the stool.
"Wait," Maribel called, making Nyra stop.
"The scent, is it making your wolf restless?" Maribel questioned, looking at Nyra over her shoulder. I knew where the conversation was heading, but I was still digesting the possibility of what I was thinking.
"Yes," my best friend answered, hanging her face.
"I know what this means, okay? I know that a mate's scent is supposed to make a werewolf restless. B-ut..." She trailed off, her voice breaking.
"You don't want a mate?" I asked. "You have been telling me that you would give anything to experience a mate's bond," I added, remembering how she has always yearned to have a mate.
"This is the alpha kings' mansion Delaney, they are the only men in this house, and they are your mates. How can you possibly be okay with this?" Her voice shook, tears welling up in her beautiful blue eyes.
Maribel and I looked at each other before bursting out laughing. "Babes, the alpha kings aren't the only men who live here," I corrected. "Didn't you hear me and the alpha kings mention the name Elias?" I asked, getting off my stool.
"You slept in Elias's room, instead of yours, that is why the scent was extremely overwhelming," Maribel explained, while I took Nyra's hands.
"My wolf," Nyra whispered, stepping away from me, her eyes directed at the kitchen door. I heard the footsteps first, before Elias walked into the kitchen.
"Oh god," Nyra cried while Elias stood frozen in the doorway, eyes widening as he stared at her.
Then Elias opened his mouth, letting a single word out. "Mate."
He closed the distance, his eyes lighting up. Nyra threw herself at him, legs on either side of his hips. Elias held her by her ass, twirling her around. I looked on, my chest swelling with pride as I smiled, genuinely. Then Elias leaned, kissing Nyra so passionately that the smell of her arousal filled the kitchen.
"That's our cue to go." Maribel stood holding my hand while wiggling her eyebrows.
Before we could walk out, however, something in me shifted. I felt it, a warmth, coiling in my chest, soft and golden like sunlight slipping through a canopy of trees. It started like a faint hum, making my wolf stir, not from alarm, but recognition. It wasn't just warmth, it was something else, one that made me close my eyes, lower my shoulders and breathe, knowing that nothing would harm me. It was the opposite of how I had felt in the briefing room. Where that had been suffocating, this felt like release.
"Delaney?" Someone was calling me, but I could only hear the voice from a distance. The weight in my chest, the pressure I didn't even know I was carrying, lifted as if someone had quietly taken it away from me.
"Delaney, are you okay?" This time round I heard the words clearly. It was Elias who called, prompting me to open my eyes. I remembered Maribel's words about my wolf being magical, and at that moment I knew.
"Pure magic," I breathed, staring at Elias, pulling my eyebrows together. "I don't understand. How can I feel your magic when you are a werewolf? Is your wolf magical like mine?"
