Alpha Kai
Ronan and I stood in front of our lead elite warriors in the underground briefing room. Beta Jeriah and Sera Vex stood closer to the wall, putting a distance between them and the rest. Ever since we had learnt that Commander Vex had also touched the paper, we ordered distance. Until we knew the effects of the magic embedded in the note, we couldn't afford to take risks, not even with our top officers.
"Report," I commanded in a cold voice, chin up, gaze running across the semicircle of warriors, all of whom we had personally trained. They stood their feet apart, hands behind, shoulders squared and heads held high. In other kingdoms, eye contact with the alphas were seen as respect, but in our Kingdom, it was a sign of weakness and it was not tolerated.
Chance, one of the trackers, stepped forward, his chest rising slowly as he gathered enough courage to speak. "We haven't been able to get any lead or information. There wasn't a trail of scent we could track, not even Deborah's scent."
Ronan walked over to him and stood toe to toe with him, staring him down. "So you are simply a useless tracker, then?" Ronan growled, his upper lip twitching.
Chance flinched slightly as Roman's dominance rolled off him. It was enough to bring him down to his knees, but he held his ground pretty well. "I believe a spell was used to mask any smell. That is why even those who were on patrol didn't sense anything until they came across the body."
"Like the rogues in Alpha Thorne's pack," I chipped in, exchanging a glance with Ronana. So we could conclude that the same witches controlling the rogues were involved in Deborah's death.
"Our order on neither of you touching the paper still stands," Ronan said, stepping away from Chance as he stepped back into the semicircle.
"What about us?" Vex spoke up, biting her lower lip, looking at Ronan. "Are Jeriah and I going to be treated like outcasts, liabilities?"
Ronan turned slowly, eyes narrowing on her. "That depends, Commander Vex. If you start foaming at the mouth, or floating."
Chuckles filled the room, but I didn't smile because if they showed any signs of dark magic, then we would have no choice but to eliminate them.
"Until we know more, you are both off duties," I said, looking at Jeriah, then at Vex. "And you will stay indoors."
"Really?" Vex chuckled, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "You can't subject us to house arrest," she complained, forcing a sweet voice as she dropped her gloves on the floor.
I glared at her, my wolf moving forward. "I expect my orders to be executed without complaints," I asserted, crossing my arms.
"Can you do that, Commander Vex?" I asked, satisfied when she muttered a barely audible yes.
Ronan and I turned our attention to the rest of the team. "Every Alpha in this kingdom should be briefed. They are to increase the border patrols, ensure constant night watch and, most of all, report anything unusual to us," Ronan instructed, then dismissed them.
As the warriors left, Ronan and I lingered behind. I watched as Vex bent over to pick up her gloves, slowly, running her hands over her thighs, obviously fully aware that my brother was watching her. She was dressed in a short leather skirt and ankle boots, leaving her thighs exposed.
"Come on," Jeriah nudged her, shaking his head at her antics. Once they left, I leaned against the edge of the table, my attention fully directed at my brother.
"You need to stop it," I said quietly.
Ronan frowned. "Stop what? What are you talking about?"
"You know exactly what I am talking about. Vex and the way she looked at you just now and yesterday in Delaney's presence. Your fucking appointments can't go on."
His expression darkened. "I fucked her before Delaney turned out to be our mate."
"Delaney doesn't know that, and Vex doesn't seem to respect the fact that you have found a second-chance mate," I hissed. "Between Deborah and Vex, Delaney is fuming, you saw how she got yesterday. Just pray Chloe backs away and the dozens of girls you have fucked before."
Ronan chuckled, an edge palpable in the soft sound, shaking his head. "Do not go down that road, Kai. I didn't ask you not to enjoy sex when our mate died. You had the opportunity to fuck, to relieve yourself and forget about her, but you chose to bury yourself in work and stay away from she-wolves."
"Do not bring her into this," I roared, moving so fast without thought, slamming Ronan against the wall. The rage inside me wasn't just about our first mate; it was about the worry that we would repeat our first mistakes and the fear of losing Delaney.
"But you brought my fuck mates into the conversation," he responded, pushing me off him. It wasn't the first time we were getting physical, despite the fact that we were twins. Yes, we were identical but also different in so many ways, one being the kind of women we screwed.
"And why wouldn't I when they are a threat to our mate bond? Some of these women won't take rejection lightly, Vex included. She is a commander, highly trained, skilled and lethal... What happens if she decides to target Delaney?" I expressed my wolf prowling with unease at the mere thought of any of the women harming our mate.
"They won't touch her," Ronan assured, running his palm over his face.
"About yesterday," Ronan began, pulling a chair in the middle of the briefing room.
"Delaney's sudden meltdown?" Sitting opposite from him, leaning on the chair. I knew him to know that he wanted to know what pushed Delaney to a point of vomiting, just like I wanted to.
He nodded. "I don't know about you, but her entire demeanour changed when her friend asked about the guard who broke her phone. Remember that none of the guards reported to us about any phone, let alone breaking it."
"Is it possible that they tortured her?" I asked, my insides heating up at the thought.
"They wouldn't have; we ordered them not to," Ronan replied, scratching his head.
"But that is not what we told Delaney. We were so harsh on her, promising her torture in the dungeons." My wolf whimpered, ashamed of our actions that day.
Before Ronan could answer, his phone rang. He fished it out, turning the phone so that I could see the healer's name flashing.
"Hello," he answered, putting the healer on loudspeaker.
"There is a wound on Deborah's neck. Upon inspection, however, I discovered that it was a mate's mark, one that was infected, even before she was killed," the healer explained.
"But Deborah wasn't mated to anyone," Ronan argued, his brows knitted.
"She was, but only a forced mate mark ends up infected." I pressed my teeth together, watching as Ronan ended the call.
"Maribel talked about the witches using mate's blood for immortality," Ronan said, his voice fading as we swore at the realisation.
"Shit, if they took her, then they will strike again. All unmated she-wolves are in danger."
