"I don't want this," I mumbled, pushing the alpha kings away. With my hands trembling, I pulled up my sweatpants and smoothed my T-shirt.
Kai wrinkled his forehead. "What do you mean?"
I took a few steps from the two men, fighting the pull towards them. The hunger in their eyes, their dilated pupils and noticeable bulges on their crotches didn't make it any easier for me. "I can't mate with you," I mumbled, closing my eyes when my wolf growled at my admission.
"What!" Ronan's brows furrowed, blinking slowly.
"B-ut," Kai stuttered, for the first time since I met him. He looked at his brother, blowing out air loudly.
"Not like this." I shook my head. "I can't just give my body, mind, soul and spirit to you just because my body will be on fire," I clarified, fighting off a sting in my eyes. Yes, I wanted them; hell I was dying for their touch, but bearing their mark wasn't something I would allow heat to decide for me.
Silence stretched in the office, apart from the sound of their laboured breaths. Kai had clenched his fists at his side, while Ronan clutched the back of his neck, pacing. Every fibre in my body wanted to give in, including my wolf, but my decisions didn't depend on something nature bestowed on she-wolves.
"No one has been able to survive heat without sexual relief. Are you sure this is what you want?" Ronan asked, his jaw hardened.
"Ye-s," I pushed my chest forward, my hard nipples rubbing on the inside of my T-shirt, drawing a small moan from me.
Kai nodded, his face hanging. "We'll have every unmated male in the estate leave their posts until your heat passes." His voice was grim, making my chest constrict. He looked at Ronan, no doubt mind linking.
"We'll see you tomorrow after this is over. If you need us at any point, just reach out; we will come," Ronan said, nudging his brother as they exited.
"For safety though, please stay in your room and lock it," Kai stated in the middle of the doorway. I watched as they left, my heart sinking, and my wolf going off on me.
Later in the night, the heat that had begun like a warm pulse in my lower abdomen during the day had turned into fire. One that coursed through my veins, setting every inch of me ablaze. My nipples were too stiff, brushing against the fabric of my silk like sparks against dry leaves.
"Make it stop," I cried, crawling on the tiled bathroom floor, seeking the cold.
"The moon is almost at its peak now, and you won't be able to hold on longer, my child. Why can't you accept the alpha kings to relieve you of this pain?" Maribel spoke, bending over beside me.
"No!" I snapped, arching my back as a wave of heat rushed to my core. My breath came out in pants, too hot that I could feel the heat as it fanned my hands.
"Del, please, you are not only punishing yourself but your mates," Nyra pointed out, crouching beside me as I writhed on the floor.
My wolf was pacing, snarling at me, wanting me to go find our mates, to surrender. But I refused.
"Honey, please," Maribel insisted. I couldn't stand it any more, their attempts to make me call the alpha kings.
"Get out," I breathed, pressing my thighs together.
"You are not thinking straight," Delaney stated.
"I said leave me alone, both of you!" I snapped, my voice sharp, though breathless.
My hand shook as I pointed at the door. "I can't fight this with you insisting that I should call my mate. You are not helping."
Maribel's voice softened. "You are making it worse by denying yourself."
"Please just go," I begged, heaving a breath as they quietly and reluctantly walked out of the bathroom.
The cold floor was doing nothing to help, as sweat trickled down, soaking the back of my neck. Heat pulsed between my legs, in time with my engorged clit. The throb was intense, more than the heartbeat, pulsating between my thighs until my legs tingled.
I stripped fast, too hot to wear anything. I even jumped into the tub and filled it with cold water, but the warmth melted away against my burning skin.
"I need ice," I murmured, staggering to my feet. My wolf was now whimpering, wild at the absence of our mates. In the room, I picked a light blanket and covered my nudity, deciding to fetch a bucket of ice from the freezer in the kitchen. My vision was blurry, my throat so dry, and my entire body ached. Every step down the stairs was a struggle as each movement led to friction.
"Fuck, oh shit!" I swore, clenching my pelvic muscles as I opened the freezer in the kitchen. I fumbled with the ice tray, minutes going by as I filled the bucket. Then I smelt it – a weird smell, masculine and out of place.
Before I could react, someone grabbed me from behind, one arm around my waist, the other pressed against my mouth.
"I knew you'd eventually come out." That voice, familiar, sent chills down my spine, momentarily warding off the heat. It was Rick, and I could feel his wolf surfacing. I kicked, but I was too sluggish and worn out, and so was my wolf.
"You smell so good, so fucking inviting, Delaney," he groaned, forcing me against the wall. I bit his palm as hard as I could, tasting his vile blood in my mouth. He let go of my mouth with a hiss but tightened his hold around my waist.
"You need this," he panted, pressing himself against me.
I choked out on the word. "Sto-p!" Shoving against him.
"I can help turn off the heat, you need my help," he insisted.
"You are not my mate!" I screamed, clawing at his arms, trying to break free, my blanket falling in the process. His eyes darkened as I was left bare for his sinister plan. At that moment I realised I had made a mistake sending my mates away. None of what was happening would have happened if I had just respected nature.
Just then, a click sounded at the door, making me snap my head towards it. There, Chloe stood, her phone in her hand, raised, smiling wickedly.
"Well, well, well," she chimed, her face smug. "If it isn't the alpha kings' mate, tangled with a guard," she mocked, her eyes gleaming, as I froze against the wall, my chest rising and falling rapidly.
