Delaney
After hours and hours of brutal interrogating Rick without any answer, the alpha kings branded his forehead, with the name rapist visible on his flesh. It was a permanent reminder of his crime. Then they banished him to die outside the kingdom. It would be a matter of time since his wolf was not healing; it was like something had been done to prevent him from healing.
“Long day, huh?” Maribel asked later that day when I went to see her in her room. We were seated on her balcony, overlooking the garden. The sun was dipping low, casting its golden rays over the land and us.
“Yeah,” I sighed. “But that's not why I am here,” I revealed.
“Oka-y.” She shrugged. “What else is troubling you, my child?” She pushed her chair closer to mine, observing me. Knowing Maribel, she would have insisted on talking about Rick, but she was actually letting it go. I had this gut feeling that she was hiding something from me.
“I haven't talked to Elias since that day in the kitchen,” I began, making her turn her head from me, casting her gaze ahead.
“Look, I know you have questions, but it's only Elias who can answer them,” she stated, getting up from the chair.
“Well, with everything that has been going on, he hasn't exactly made himself available. So how will he answer if he's nowhere to be found in this mansion?” I stood, crossing my arms.
“I’m sorry, Delaney, but you will have to wait for him. I have dinner to prepare.” She dismissed me, clearly not ready to answer my questions.
“I felt the warmth when Elias walked in; why can't you just tell me why I felt that way?” I insisted, following her in her room.
“Dinner will be ready in one hour,” she said, outright ignoring my questions. Instead of accompanying her to the kitchen or going to my room, I decided to check up on Nyra and see whether she had any answers.
I knocked on her door, shifting on my feet. A minute or so later, her door swung open, revealing a dishevelled Nyra.
“How are you?” she asked, pulling me inside, reeking of Elias.
“I heard that the bastard was caught. Please tell me the alpha kings killed him.” She hugged me, tightening her hold on me.
“They banished him,” I answered, then went ahead to narrate how his dick was already cut off.
"Well, he deserved it." She paused.
“I haven't had the chance to say it... I'm so sorry about what he did. I shouldn't have left you in your room alone,” she regretted, as we pulled apart from the hug.
I lowered my eyes. “I kicked you and Maribel out. It wasn't your fault that Rick came."
“But still,” she said.
“I didn't come here to talk about Rick Nyra. How are you holding up, you know you and your mate?” I wiggled my eyebrows, earning a playful slap on my upper arm as we plopped on her bed.
Her face was turning a nice pink, with her eyes spotting a dreamy look. “Oh god, Nyra, have you…?” I placed my fingertipsover my open mouth, pulling my head back.
“After you left the kitchen after Elias and I discovered we were mates. We, um, he carried me straight to his room, and we just got lost in the moment,” she narrated, smiling.
“Wait. So when you were lecturing me to give in to the heat and call my mates, you had already mated with Elias?” I asked, shaking my head playfully.
“Guilty,” she giggled. “I couldn't understand how you were able to resist them while in heat when I had been unable to resist Elias.”
“I'm so happy for you, Nye. Question though, why are you still in your room?” I asked, raising my eyebrows.
“You mean, why haven't I moved to his room?” she answered with a question, the light on her face draining a bit. I nodded, observing as she took in a long, deep breath.
“Because I feel like he is hiding something from me,” she admitted, shifting on the edge of the bed.
“What is it?” I took her hands into mine.
“You said that you felt magic when he walked in the kitchen,” she stated, biting her lip, something she did so oftenwhen she was in deep thought.
“I swear I felt it, Nyra,” I responded.
“Well, I asked Elias about it in the morning when he came.” Like other unmated males, he had left the mansion. Even though Nyra was his mate, he hadn’t yet marked her.
“And?” I pressed, raising a brow.
“He said that you were confused because your heat was rolling in.”
“What? No, I know what I felt, Nyra, and it wasn't because of heat. That warm feeling was the same Maribel had described, safe and pure,” I defended.
“That’s exactly what I told him, but he insisted that you felt your own things. Then when I told him about Rick, he just took off without a word, and since then, he hasn't come back.” Nyra ran her hands over her face.
“I just… I don't know why he can't trust me to tell him the truth. I am his mate, for goodness sake, Delaney; do I not deserve to know exactly who I am mated to?” Nyra asked, swallowing hard. Her eyes were glistening, and I could hear her loud heartbeat.
“I am coming from Maribel's room to ask her about the same,” I confessed.
“What did she say? Any answers?” she spoke fast, rushing for an answer.
I shook my head, then replied, “she dismissed me, Nye. It's like she and Elias are hiding something.”
"Well, whatever it is, we have to find out as soon as possible before I allow him to mark me. There is no way I will bear his mark without knowing him fully." Just then a voice probed my head, sounding like a whisper in my ear, knocking, except I was hearing it in my mind. I leapt to my feet, covering my ears.
“Relax, baby, it's Kai.” I covered my ears, closing my eyes tightly.
“And Ronan,” came Roman’s voice, louder than Kai's.
“Get out of my head!” I yelled, pressing my hands over my ears.
“Let me guess, this is your first time mind-linking?” Nyra let out a loud laugh.
I nodded, blinking rapidly.
“Close your eyes, and say whatever you want to say to them in your mind, silently.” I did as Nyra guided, telling them to fuck off. I knew it worked when Ronan chuckled while Kai reprimanded me.
“We wouldn’t be mind-linking if you had a phone we could call,” Kai stated, his voice deep.
“And whose fault is that? I snapped. “ I had one before Rick broke it. Plus, why call me when we are in the same mansion? Can't you just shout my name? I told you I was coming to see Maribel and Nyra.”
“Well, if it was something that could wait, we wouldn't be mind linking with you, Del,” Ronan said, his previous playfulness in his time disappearing.
“We are going out, something came up. I know we had said that we would spend tonight together, but duty calls,” Ronan added, his cryptic statement making me hold my breath.
“Another woman’s body has been found, with an infected mate mark, same as…”
“Deborah’s mark,” I finished.
“Instead of a note, the numbers 2 over 9 are curved on her right breast,” Kai added, the revelation leaving me staggering back, my heart racing.
