Two weeks had gone by, agonisingly slow. There was no word from my father and the rest of the alphas about anything unusual. The alpha kings had not uncovered anything surrounding the killings of Deborah and the other she-wolf. I had managed to avoid Elias, despite Nyra's and Maribel's endless attempts.
I was lying on a sisal mat outside in the backyard, basking under the warm sun. My mates were not around; they had left for a tour to one of the Kingdom packs for business. Despite them asking me to join them, I declined and chose to stay back at the estate. Nyra was seated on the bench beside me, busy reading an erotic novel.
"You know you won't avoid Elias forever," Nyra stated after a while of comfortable silence.
I didn't answer immediately, taking slow, deep breaths. "I am not avoiding him," I lied, like I did anytime she brought up the topic, rolling on my side to look at her.
She scoffed. "You are dodging him like he's the plague. You can even stay in a room where he is alone."
"Look, Nye, I am not angry at Elias for what he did to Lucy," I confessed, tilting my mouth to the side briefly. "I was just hurt he didn't trust me enough to tell me the truth sooner."
"So tell him that," she said, turning the next page of her novel.
"I will," I sighed. "And by the way, that novel is turning on; maybe you should put it down." I teased, biting off a smile when she glared at me.
"No, it's not," she denied, pressing her legs together.
"Is that why the scent of your arousal is heavy?" I jested, breaking into laughter when she threw the novel at me, hitting me square in the face.
I picked up the novel, ready to hurl it back at her when a guard cleared his throat a few steps away from us. Since Rick's vile actions, the alpha kings had changed all the guards into mated males and females.
"Ladies, sorry to interrupt you, but there is a gentleman at the main gate claiming to be your friend," he relayed.
Nyra and I exchanged a glance. Who could that be? I wondered. We didn't have any friends in the capital, so it was a little bit weird.
"Maybe it's Carter," Nyra whispered.
"Did he tell you he was going to pay us a visit?" I asked, sitting up from the mat.
"This gentleman, is he a redhead, tall, with freckles on his face?" Nyra asked, crossing her arms.
"Yes, ma'am," the guard answered, looking at his wristwatch. "But we can't let him in unless you confirm you know him. We will have to turn him away," he explained.
"Alright, we will be right behind you," I dismissed him, turning my attention to Nyra.
"What?" she asked, shrugging.
"With everything going on in the capital, dead bodies turning up, and rumours about my red wolf, do you think this could be a trap?" I whispered, looking around the backyard.
"There's only one way to find out; come on." She stood, then pulled me up.
When we got to the gate, we found Carter arguing with another guard, trying to force his way inside. His hair was held in a ponytail, his face was clean-shaven, and he was dressed in his favourite shorts. His old Chevy Camaro was still running behind him. One look at him, and the memory of falling from the balcony while trying to escape the alpha kings came rushing back. I still had questions about how the sheets suddenly tore.
"Nyra, Delaney," he called in a light, jovial voice, grinning, spreading his arms. Nyra was the first to run into his arms, giggling at something he said. I followed, completing the circle with a hesitant hug. After minutes of laughing and chatting, the guards finally let him in after we confirmed that he really was our friend.
"So Nyra said you were busy going around the packs," I began, carrying his duffel bag inside the mansion. We sat in the living room, waiting for Elias to show him to his room.
"Yeah. Imagine my surprise when I heard stories about a red wolf, only for me to go back to our pack and learn from your father that it was you," he narrated.
"Why didn't you tell me that you didn't have a wolf?" he asked, slapping my arm playfully.
"You think that she'd have at least told one of us," Nyra chimed in, rolling her eyes.
"Anyway, I am just glad that one of my best friends has a unique wolf," he winked at me, his eyes settling on my lips shortly. The gaze was quick, but it made me uncomfortable.
"Speaking of best friends, I can't believe you guys have already found your mates," he wiggled his eyebrows.
"I can't say that I am not hurt. You guys made really big steps in your life and didn't even think to tell me," he pouted, earning a chuckle from Nyra.
"In my defence, I don't have a phone." I raised my hands in the air.
"And what excuse do you have, Nyra?" He arched his brow, leaning on the couch.
"Why didn't you tell me that you will be visiting, and why today?" Nyra asked, ignoring Carter's question.
Carter frowned, looking at me and then at her. "Surely, do I need a reason to see my friends?"
"It's just that the last time I heard from you was weeks ago, when Del and I were coming back to the capital," Nyra explained, looking at him. "I figured you didn't want to talk."
Before Carter could respond, Elias walked in, his eyes darkening when he laid eyes on Carter. I kept quiet, still not ready to face him.
"Elias," Nyra walked up to him and kissed his cheek, then linked their arms. "This is Carter, our best friend," she introduced.
"Carter, this is my mate." She leaned on Elias, giggling like a teenager.
Carter stood, ready to shake Elias's hand, a gesture Elias didn't reciprocate. I narrowed my eyes, picking up on the tension that was rising with the testosterone in the room.
"Don't ever show up in the alpha kings' estate again without an invitation. Next time you might not be allowed inside," Elias spoke, his voice low, with an edge.
"This way, we have a room at the servants' quarters," he stated, leaving with Carter.
"Did you catch his scent?" I asked Nyra, shifting on the couch.
"Yeah, his usual. I understand that you didn't have a wolf, now that you do, his pine scent must have hit your nostrils. I have always hated it," she chuckled, sitting beside me.
The problem was, while Nyra insisted he smelt like pine, I had not caught any scent. He was absolutely scentless to me.
