"Who gave you the permission to let Carter inside this compound?" Ronan barged into my bedroom, his gaze directed at me in the middle of my bed. I sat up, leaning on the headboard, placing the novel I was reading aside.
"Permission?" I echoed, furrowing my eyebrows.
"Yes, Delaney. You let a stranger into this estate without consulting with us first," he repeated, standing at the foot of the bed. "So I will repeat my question: who gave you that authority?"
I let out a chuckle of disbelief, shaking my head. "You have been away for two days, and the first thing you do when you get back is talk to me like this?" I asked, tilting my head.
"You haven't answered my question. What is your Carter doing here? The same Carter who tried helping you escape to goddess knows where?" His voice was low and rough, his glare sharp.
"Carter is my friend, and he tried helping me escape because that's what friends do—they help each other." I crawled off the bed, stepping onto the floor.
Ronan's eyes darkened. "You cannot trust him, Del. I mean, do you even know where he came from?"
I stepped closer to him, craning my head to look at him. "And yet I trust you even after you signed my death sentence," I breathed.
He flinched, closing his eyes briefly. "Delaney, this is different," he stated.
"Get out." I pointed at the door. There was no reasoning with him when he was being hostile towards me.
"Are you serious right now?" he questioned, running a hand over his face.
I held his gaze, willing the boiling feeling to cool down. He had no right coming into my room, shouting at me, and belittling me, mate or not. "Alpha Ronan, I don't know what happened during your tour, but I will not allow you to ruin my moods. I'm not just some she-wolf, I am your mate, not your subordinate," I relayed in a low voice.
"Now please, get the hell out of my room." I dragged the words between my teeth, pronouncing each clearly. For a moment I thought he was going to yell, but instead he clenched his jaw, turned, and stalked out of my room.
I let out a shaky breath, starting to pace. Just then, Kai walked in, more composed, hands in his pockets. "Have you also come to yell at me?" I asked.
Kai's gaze roamed over me, softening ever so slightly. "I missed you, Del," he muttered, spreading his arms. Despite everything, I missed him, and I also missed Ronan, so I stepped into his embrace.
"You know, Ronan's worried, and so am I," he went ahead, rubbing his arms up and down my back. His touch was warm, a reminder of our shared moment before he and Ronan left. The way he had held me, claiming me on his bed, over and over again.
"Worried about what exactly? Carter is my childhood friend," I argued, stepping out of his embrace.
"Look, Ronan and I handle things differently. I am not going to shout at you, not when I spent the last two days looking forward to seeing your pretty face," he spoke, stretching his lips into a brief smile.
"But Carter showing up unannounced, while Ronan and I are away, when bodies are showing up? It doesn't seem or sound right," he explained, his voice calm.
I tilted my head. "So now you think my friend is a suspect? Carter is a werewolf, not a rogue or a witch."
"You can't tell me that deep down you don't have questions about him." His words reminded me of Carter being scentless, despite Nyra insisting that she could smell his pine scent.
I swallowed hard, chewing on my bottom lip gently. "When you and your brother come back to your senses and realise that I missed you, I will be around. Right now, I need air."
I walked out, throwing a glance at Ronan's half-open door. I mind-linked Nyra to confirm whether she was in her room. Then I went straight there, ignoring Elias, whom I passed in the hallway.
"Trouble in paradise?" Nyra asked, lying on her stomach on the rug, her phone in her hand.
"You can say so," I sighed.
"I know what will cheer you up," Carter chimed in, walking out of the bathroom, rolling down his sleeves.
"I didn't know you were here," I spoke, looking between him and Nyra.
"We were about to mind-link you and invite you for your first run in wolf form," Nyra stated excitedly, while Carter nodded.
"At 10 p.m. in the dark night?" I looked at her like she had lost her mind. "The alpha kings will never allow this, not with the danger that's lurking around. I bet Elias won't agree either.
"Don't be a bore, Del. A run at this time in your beast will help you cool down. Plus what do you have to be afraid of? I will be there, and are you forgetting that you are a red wolf, powerful and bigger than any alpha?" Carter chimed in, crossing his arms. My wolf stirred at the compliment. She wanted out, to feel the breeze of the cold night air on her fur.
I sighed. "You guys, I don't know about this," I stated, tapping my foot on the floor.
"Come on, Elias and the alpha kings don't have to know. All we have been doing is sitting around in this mansion," Nyra said, getting up, earning a nod from me.
Minutes later, we were driving out of the mansion, with Carter behind the wheel and Nyra and I lying low on the backseat. I knew if the guards spotted us, then they would alert the alpha kings.
"Are you sure about this?" I asked as we got out of the car, 30 minutes away from the mansion. Carter had insisted that it was the right spot, not too far away from the mansion, and not that close either.
The moment we approached the first line of the trees, however, the air around us chilled, the temperature dropping a degree. My wolf stirred inside me, restless. Then a whiff of a sewage-like smell hit me, strong enough to raise alarm.
"Do you smell that?" I asked, stopping at the edge of the forest. I looked around, swallowing hard as the hairs on the back of my neck stood.
"Smell what?" I never got to answer Nyra because a wolf emerged from the trees, lunging straight at Nyra.
"Nyraa!" I screamed, my wolf surging forward. Then I felt it, brief yet fast, the sound of my bones rearranging themselves as I shifted mid-air. My wolf collided hard with another wolf, rolling on the ground. Then just as fast, I sank our canines on its neck and ripped the flesh off, killing it instantly as the taste of its vile blood filled my mouth.
By the time I turned, Nyra was being dragged away in her wolf form, snarling, digging her claws on the forest floor. Carter had shifted, facing off with another wolf, so I chose to help Nyra. I leapt forward, my wolf and I as one, slamming onto Nyra's captor, clamping our jaw into the attacker's hind leg, saliva dripping from my canines, snarling.
Suddenly, I felt it, the same warmth as when Elias was around. Then he emerged, chanting a language I couldn't understand, hands spread in the air. The more he chanted, the more the warmth intensified, turning into heat.
Within minutes the rogues were shifting like Lucy did, growling in pain as bones pierced through their skin. In no time, three rogues lay there, dead, bleeding.
Then Elias spoke, his calm voice with an edge in it. "Do you girls have a fucking death wish?"
