"Are you okay? Goddess baby," Kai inspected, his brother beside me, tilting my head, eyes roaming over my body in the dark, searching for any injuries. We had shifted back behind the trees after the alpha kings arrived with a change of clothes. The adrenaline I had felt when I shifted was now crashing, leaving me trembling on my feet. I hugged myself, glancing at Nyra, who was locked in a heated argument with Elias.
The moment my mates established that we were okay, they exploded. "What the hell were you thinking?" Ronan roared, the question directed at me, fists clenched at his sides.
"And you," he turned to Carter, his nostrils flaring, voice dropping low into something lethal. "You come to my estate, sneak my mate out, and almost get her killed?" He zoomed past me, knocking Carter against the bark of a gnarled tree. From the beating he had received from Elias, it was becoming hard for him to heal fast. Despite Nyra and I insisting that Carter didn't make us go for the run, Elias had still assaulted him, and now he was about to go through the same ordeal, maybe even worse, in the arms of the alpha kings.
"On your feet," Kai ordered Carter in an overly calm voice, one that shut Nyra and Elias up. He approached slowly, mouth set in a hard thin line and shoulders squared. Every crunch of the leaves beneath his feet was palpable in the quiet woods. Carter dragged himself up, one hand holding the back of his head, the other barely lifting up in defence. Whimpers fell from his mouth, his legs trembling.
"Was it your idea?" he asked, wrapping his hand around Carter's neck.
"Kai, please," I begged, rushing to him, only for Ronan to block me.
"Did you suggest coming out here?" Kai spat, tightening his hold around Carter as he lifted him up like he weighed nothing. It was the calmness he was exhibiting that sent chills down my spine.
"No, you don't understand," Nyra answered, looking at Carter, whose hands were flailing in the air. His eyes were watering fast, and he couldn't utter a word, except gasp for breath.
"Stay out of it," Elias pulled her back, sending daggers at Carter.
I tried getting out of Ronan's grasp, but he wasn't relenting. "It was my idea!" I hyperventilated, my heart pounding so hard under my ribcage. I wasn't going to be the reason Carter was going to die.
"And yet you drove here in his car!" Ronan shouted, tightening his grip around my wrist.
I breathed. "Because I needed air from you two! Don't you get it? You weren't exactly nice to me when you got back earlier." I screamed, my vision blurring, breath quickening at the scene in front of me. Carter was losing consciousness fast; a few more seconds and he would die in the hands of my mate.
"If you kill him, Kai, I swear to the goddess that I will reject you. Both of you," I blurted, my chest rising fast, up and down, mouth open.
He didn't say a word, he let go of Carter and then slowly turned to face me, his brows furrowed. One of the perks of being a werewolf was night vision, and I could see every emotion in his eyes as he narrowed them, then blinked once, twice, and finally rapidly. Ronan let me go as if I had burnt him, swearing under his breath.
"You would reject us," Ronan rasped, staring at me like I had slapped him. "For a male that put you and Nyra in danger?" He shook his head, stepping away from me, mouth open. Instead of answering immediately, I looked at my best friend as he dropped on the ground, wheezing and clutching his throat.
"He did not put us in danger, okay? Nyra and I agreed to go for the run, he didn't force us or drag us at gunpoint. Isn't that right, Nyra?" She nodded, her lips trembling at the sight of Carter. He was bloodied, coughing, and spitting blood on the forest floor beside the dead rogues in their wolf forms.
"Well, you must be stupid," Elias chimed in, dragging Nyra near us. "Look at those vile senseless beasts, at the size of them. You had no chance against them!" He pointed at the rogues, lying on the ground lifeless.
"What were you even doing out here yourself? Stalking us, Elias? So now you are no longer hiding things, but also—"
"Elias is right." Ronan interrupted. "We don't even have any leads on the murdered unmated females, and you willingly came into the woods?" Ronan asked, closing his eyes.
"We are not unmated," I stated, lifting my chin up.
Kai chuckled, a sound that was heavy, almost bitter. "You do not have our marks, Delaney. So as far as the witches are concerned, you are unmated."
"And that makes you an easy target," Elias finished, lowering his eyes at Nyra.
"This can never happen again," Kai said.
"And you," Ronan turned his attention to Carter, letting out a low, threatening growl that made my friend flinch.
"You will be locked in the quarters until we decide what to do with you. If you so much as attempt to sneeze without my permission, you will answer to me." Several guards arrived at that moment, bowing to the alpha kings. Two took Carter away despite mine and Nyra's pleading. I didn't, however, miss the brief glance he sent at the dead rogues as he was dragged away.
"I want the movement of these rogues tracked. I want answers on how they managed to get far into the kingdom without the patrol team spotting them. And do not bother coming to me without the answers," Ronan instructed, dismissing the guards.
"How will they track them when there is no scent whatsoever?" Elias asked, looking at the alpha kings.
I narrowed my eyes, looking at the beasts. Then I sniffed, just as a confirmation of whether my sense of smell was still working. "That's not right, they do have a smell," I stated, walking closer.
"What do you mean?" Kai asked as I squatted beside one, gagging as the pungent sour smell wafted through my nose and mouth. I got up, holding my nose between my index finger and thumb until I stepped away.
"Can't you smell that?" I looked at my mates, then at Elias and Nyra, lifting my brows up.
"Smell what?" Ronan asked.
I shook my head. "The smell the rogues are emitting. Rotten eggs, sulphur...like sewage."
"No, they don't," Elias argued, sniffing out loudly.
Nyra looked at me, then swallowed hard. "When we got out of the car, Delaney asked whether we could smell that. Then seconds later, the rogues jumped on us. Also the other day she said that Ca—"
"It's probably nothing. Maybe my wolf is imagining smells," I cut Nyra off, giving her a side glance. It was likely that I was imagining things.
"What did she say? This is not a joke, Nyra; if you know something, tell us," Elias coaxed.
"She said that Carter is scentless," she mumbled, mouthing "I'm sorry" at me. I couldn't understand why I was smelling things differently from the rest.
"He smells like pine, what do you mean?" Ronan asked.
"Maybe it's because she is a red wolf. I'm sure Maribel will have answers," Kai answered, running a hand through his hair.
At that moment, I could only hope that my wolf and I weren't smelling nonexistent smells, because that would mean that something was very wrong.
