All eyes were on me at that point but I couldn’t really care less. Kieran stood before me, his face twisted with a
combination of disbelief and fury. I could see the vein throbbing in his temple, the way his hands clenched and unclenched at his sides – a clear sign of his barely-contained rage.
"You're rejecting me as your mate?" he snarled.
I nodded as firmly as I could. "Yes, Kieran," I said, my voice strong and clear. "I reject you as my mate, and I don't ever want to see you in this office again."
For a moment, I feared he might lash out, that he might try to drag me away by force. But to my surprise, he simply turned on his heel and stormed out in silence.
I stood there, my heart pounding in my chest, the adrenaline coursing through my veins. Part of me expected the whispers to start up again, the accusing stares to return. But instead, the crowd parted, their attention shifting as Ryker strode into the room, his very presence commanding the attention of all present.
"What's going on here?" he demanded in his
deep voice. "Care to explain what that little display was all about?" he asked, emotionless .
Oh no, he must have already sensed that his enemy had been there.
I gulped hard, feeling some heat in between my palms. "It was... it was nothing, Alpha Ryker. Just a personal matter that got a bit out of hand."
Ryker raised a brow, his expression skeptical. "A personal matter, hmm?" he murmured, his gaze searching my face. "And this 'personal matter' didn't have anything to do with you publicly rejecting your former mate?"
I felt the color drain from my face, my heart sinking. Of course he knew. He had to have heard everything going on and even sensed Kieran’s presence.
"I... I had to, Alpha Ryker. Kieran, he... he showed up, and he was causing a scene, and I couldn't just–"
I trailed off as he called out my name again in a chill manner, "Listen, I don't care about the details. What I want to know is, are you going to be able to focus on your work, or is this... personal situation going to be a distraction?"
I swallowed hard, my gaze dropping to the floor. "I... I can focus, Alpha Ryker," I said, my voice steadier now. "I promise, it won't be a problem."
Ryker studied me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, to my surprise, a faint smile curved at the corners of his lips.
"Very well, Selena," he said, his tone surprisingly gentle. "I'm holding you to that promise. Now, get back to work, and for the love of all things holy, try to keep the drama to a minimum, will you?"
I nodded with a small smile and thanked him.
The rest of the day passed by very quickly, and I was able to salvage the account we had lost and also secure several new clients as well. Linda was not happy about it which made me even happier. It was everything to see that Ryker was proud of me.
I made my way to my car by the end of the day as it was getting late and my work was done. I sped through the streets, happy to go relax at home.
I had just gotten out of my car when I noticed a car that I had sensed earlier was following me closely. That same car was now parked across the street in a weird way and I couldn’t see the people inside. A prickle of unease crawled up my spine, and my wolf, ever-vigilant, stirred to life, her hackles raised in warning.
I stood there for a moment, my heart beating loudly in my chest, as I tried to convince myself that I was simply being paranoid. But as I watched, two figures alighted from the car, and they started moving towards me.
I held my breath as they approached me looking at me squarely. My wolf let out a low, warning growl. I hastily reached for the door handle, fumbling with the lock as I tried to get inside the safety of my house.
But the men were faster, closing the distance between us in a matter of seconds. "Where are you going in such a hurry, sweetheart?" one of them drawled.
I felt a surge of panic rise within me, my heart pounding in my ears. "This is my house," I said, my voice shaking. "I was just trying to get inside.I don’t know any of you—"
"Oh, we know exactly who you are," the first man interrupted, a cruel smile stretching across his face.
"And we know that you're no longer Alpha Kieran's mate. That means you have no pack, no protection and we can easily deal with you without any obstructions."
At that moment I wondered why I had foolishly rejected Kieran knowing fully I had no pack as a backup plan.
My blood ran cold at his words, and I was struggling to keep calm now. These men had to be rogues and I knew they were there to either hurt me or take me as a slave.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I stammered, my voice betraying my growing fear. "I think you have the wrong person."
The second man stepped forward, his face inches from mine. "Don't play dumb with us, Selena. We know all about you, and we know that you're fair game now."
With a sudden, swift movement, he grabbed my arm, his grip super strong. "Now, why don't you come with us quietly, and we'll make sure no one gets hurt?"
I desperately tried to pull away from his grasp. "Let me go!" I cried, my voice shrill with panic. "This is my house, and I'm not going anywhere with you!"
The man's grip only became stronger , and he pulled me closer, his breath hot on my face. "Now, now, no need to be like that. We just want to have a little chat, that's all. Maybe you can come with us, nice and quiet-like, and we can all avoid any... unpleasantness."
