With that, he lunged forward, his grip closing around my arm, and I felt a sharp, stinging pain as his claws dug deep into my flesh. I let out a sharp gasp, my wolf screaming at me inside to fight back.
I tried to scream but one of them closed my mouth tightly.
"Shh, shh, sweetheart," he whispered, his smelly breath hot on my face. "You don't want to go and ruin all our fun, now do you?"
No matter how hard I struggled, they were too strong, and it was two against one. They started pulling me away with them against my will and I hoped that anyone at all could come to my rescue, I didn’t even mind it being Kieran.
Just as I felt my consciousness slipping, a sudden, savage roar was heard, loud enough to damage my ear drums, the force of it sending a shockwave through my very being.
I turned my head, squinting my eyes to see Ryker, his eyes blazing with so much anger that I had never seen before. He was on the men in an instant, his movements a blur as he tore them away from me, his hands closing around their throats tightly.
"How dare you touch her," he growled in anger, and I watched in stunned silence as he snapped the neck of one of the men with a swift, effortless motion.
The other man let out a terrified cry, his eyes wide with terror. He scrambled to his feet, his gaze darting wildly as he attempted to run away. But Ryker was not sparing him either. His strong grip found the man's throat, his grip tightening until his struggles grew weaker and weaker, finally falling still.
Ryker stood there, his chest heaving, his gaze fixed on the lifeless bodies at his feet. For a moment, he was silent, and I couldn't help but wonder what was going through his mind.
I watched as his expression grew distant, his gaze unfocused, and I realized that he must be mind-linking with someone.
He confirmed my thoughts as he told me he just called on his right hand man, his beta, Caleb to come over. Then he gently asked me if I was okay and his gaze flickered to my wound.
I nodded shakily, my throat too tight to speak. Moments later, a black SUV pulled up and Caleb emerged.
"Alpha. I came as soon as I could. What are your orders?"
Ryker gestured towards the two dead men. "Take care of this mess. Make sure it's done properly."
Caleb nodded as he approached the men, a pair of zip-ties in hand. "It will be done, Alpha."
As Caleb set to work, Ryker’s eyes found mine again.
"Let me see your wound," he said in a soft reassuring voice.
I nodded, allowing him to examine me, my heart pounding in my chest as his fingers brushed over the bruises on my skin. There was a tenderness in his touch so different from how violent he was earlier.
"Ryker, How... how did you know I was in trouble?" I had to ask him.
His hands covered mine. "Of course I was definitely going to know. You're my mate."
My eyes widened slightly. He knew already. I didn’t know how to feel suddenly now that I knew he was aware we were mates. I didn’t want to think about whether he was going to reject me or not.
I offered him a faint smile as he followed me to my doorstep.
I hesitated before asking him. "Ryker, would you…. would you like to come in? I could, um, make you a light meal, if you'd like. I mean, just a way to say thank you properly."
He smiled lightly and agreed to it. But he insisted that we took care of my wound first. I told him that my wolf was going to heal me soon but he was adamant, saying that I needed to get a first aid kit to make the process faster.
I gave in finally and ushered him into the house, grabbing the first aid kit.
I watched him tend to my injury in silence, stealing glances at his handsome face.
When he finally finished, I thanked him again and found my way to the kitchen. Growing up, I had always loved spending time in the kitchen, learning recipes from my mother and grandmother.
My gaze landed on a pack of fresh ground beef, and I knew exactly what I wanted to make - my mother’s amous meatballs.
I quickly gathered the necessary ingredients with Ryker watching silently from the kitchen table, his piercing blue eyes following my every move.
"Do you cook often?" Ryker's deep voice suddenly cut through the silence, causing me to jump slightly.
I told him it was something I had always enjoyed since I was young.
"I can't recall the last time I set foot in a kitchen. I've always had people do that sort of thing for me." He admitted.
"It must be nice to come from royalty. Maybe I can teach you a thing or two," I mused.
Ryker's lips curved into a half-smile. "I would love that."
As I moved on to mincing the garlic, I could feel his gaze boring into my back, and I wondered what was going through his mind.
"Why don't you have a pack?" Ryker's question caught me off guard, and I paused, the garlic clove frozen in my hand.
I let out a heavy sigh, my shoulders sagging slightly. "I, uh... I had to get away from Kieran somehow. He was becoming overbearing, controlling. I just needed to escape, you know?"
"But it's not right for you to be under no one's protection. As my mate, you should be part of my pack."
I turned to face him, my heart racing. "Your pack? But I thought-" I trailed off, not knowing what else to say.
"I know it may seem sudden, but I can't stand the thought of you being out here alone, vulnerable to any threats. You're my mate, Selena, and I want to keep you safe."
"I appreciate the offer, and I’d be honored to join your pack," I responded honestly.
