As I stepped out of my apartment the next morning, I noticed two tall dangerous looking men at my doorstep.
At first, I felt a surge of relief, assuming that Ryker had sent them to keep watch over me. After all, now that I was part of his pack, it was only natural that he would want to ensure my safety.
But why hadn't he mentioned anything about these bodyguards?
I approached the men, my gaze locked onto theirs. "Excuse me," I said, my voice as steady as I could manage. "Who sent you here?"
The taller of the two men stepped forward in a stiff posture. "Alpha Kieran, ma'am," he replied, his tone flat.
I felt a surge of anger rise within me hearing that name.
"Kieran? What the hell does he think he's doing?"
The bodyguard remained silent, and I felt my frustration rising by the second. Without wasting any time, I pulled out my phone, my fingers frantically dialing Kieran's number.
The line rang for what felt like an eternity, before he finally answered.
"Selena, I'm so glad you called."
"Cut the crap, Kieran," I half snapped. "What the hell do you think you're doing, sending your goons to my doorstep?"
Kieran let out a soft chuckle, the sound of it grating on my nerves. "Now, now, my dear, is that any way to greet your own mate?"
"Mate?" I scoffed in anger. "I already rejected you if you don’t remember. Now tell me, why are your men here?"
He sighed, his tone laced with a hint of exasperation. "Even though you're no longer part of my pack, Selena, I still can't help but worry about your well-being. After all, you're still a part of me, and I couldn't bear the thought of you being vulnerable to any potential threats."
I felt my blood boil, the urge to strangle him through the phone nearly overwhelming. "Potential threats?" I snarled, squeezing my phone even tighter. "I can take care of myself, Kieran. I don't need your protection, and I certainly don't need your bodyguards lurking around my home."
Kieran clicked his tongue, "Now, now, Selena, don't be so hasty. I'm only looking out for you, as any Alpha would. I’m doing this even after that crazy stunt you pulled at your workplace and humiliated me. I do care about you."
"Do yourself a favor and call off your lackeys before I have to do it myself."
I ended the call and turned my attention to the bodyguards. "Get off my property, and tell Kieran to mind his own damn business."
The men exchanged a glance, their expressions unreadable, before one of them finally spoke up. "Ma'am, we have our orders–"
"I don't care what your orders are," I snapped, cutting him off. "You're trespassing on my property, and I want you gone before I get back."
Kieran was up to something, I was sure of it. And the fact that he had sent his men to watch over me, even after I had severed ties with his pack, only served to increase my suspicions. What was he planning? And more importantly, how was I going to protect myself from his meddling?
I made my way to my desk on reaching the office and was greeted by the last person I wanted to see. The thorn in my flesh, Linda.
Her sharp gaze immediately zeroed in on me, and I wished the day could end already. She gave me a pile of work to do and hovered nearby, scrutinizing my every move.
Finally, as the day drew to a close, we were called to a meeting with a high-profile client – one of the company's most important accounts.
As we filed into the conference room, Linda shot me a pointed look, and I couldn't help but wonder what she was up to.
The meeting progressed smoothly until Linda decided to take full credit for the work I did, presenting it as her own. I couldn’t believe my eyes as the client representative praised her along with everyone else.
"That's not true, and you know it," I spoke up and everyone turned to me in surprise. "I spent hours working on that."
Linda's smile faltered, and I could see the wheels turning in her mind as she scrambled to find a way to discredit me.
"Look, Selena. I know you're feeling a little... left out, but there's no need to make a big fuss about this.
After all, we're a team, and we all have to do our part, even if it's not always recognized."
I felt my blood boil at her patronizing tone. "That's not enough, I won't stand by and let you take credit for my work.Sir, I have documentations to prove it is my work and not hers"
The puzzled client gestured on me to go on and in a matter of minutes I was able to prove myself and Linda looked infuriated.
"Well, Selena, if you're able to demonstrate this level of dedication and attention to detail on all of our projects, I'd be more than happy to assign you an even more prominent role moving forward."
I thanked the client and soon everyone else was applauding me. I felt relieved and happy until I reached the coffee room and Linda followed me in there.
"How dare you make me look like a fool in front of everyone?" She hissed angrily.
"I'm just doing my job, same as you."
"Your job?" she scoffed. "You think you're so special, don't you? That you can just walk in and steal the spotlight?"
I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could, Linda's hand shot out, the steaming cup of coffee in her grasp splashing against my shirt.
I gasped in shock,my hands clutching at the fabric of my shirt.
Linda's lips curled into a sinister smile, "Oops. Looks like you've had a little accident."
"And just so you know, Selena," she leaned in. "I'm Ryker's betrothed, his future Luna. And I'm not going to let some pathetic little upstart like you get in my way."
Ryker's betrothed? His future Luna? How could this be?
