As I leaned over the sink, heaving up the contents of my stomach, I couldn't help but stare down at the little pink plus sign staring back at me. I was pregnant.
It had been three months since the accident in the supermarket parking lot, and so much had changed. Kieran had refused to back down, still chasing after me like a lovesick puppy, even after I made it clear that I rejected his claim on me.
And then there was Ryker - the man who had been nothing but kind and protective since the moment I met him. I stared down at the pregnancy test strip, my heart racing. This wasn’t supposed to happen, not like this.
I didn’t even known if Ryker actually loved me or if he was just being his usual kind and protective self. What if I was not as important as I thought I was? By now I had fallen head over heels for him and I couldn't bear the thought of being stuck on another man who didn't truly love me, especially not with a baby on the way.
Groaning, I rinsed my mouth out and wiped my face, finally pulling out my phone to call Macey. I needed her advice, her reassurance, anything to help me make sense of this mess. As soon as she answered the video chat, her eyes went wide. "Selena! Girl, what's wrong? You look terrible."
I bit my lip, staring down at the test strip in my hand and showing it to her on the screen. "Macey, I... I am pregnant."
Her jaw dropped open, and for a moment, I was convinced she was going to fall right off her chair. "Oh my god! Selena, that is amazing! You are going to be a mom, and I am going to be a godmother!"
I winced at her loud shrieks, shushing her quickly. "Shhh! Keep it down, would you? I haven’t told anyone yet, so please don’t let your entire neighborhood know. The banquet even starts in like an hour and I don’t know what to feel."
Macey's eyes widened even further. "The banquet? Selena, why weren't you ready yet? Your hair and makeup should have been done an hour ago!"
I groaned, running a hand through my tangled hair. "I know, I know. I just... I feel so awful, Mace. I do not know what to do."
Her brow creased in concern. "What do you mean? Aren’t you excited? This is a wonderful thing!"
I bit my lip, contemplating how to even begin explaining the mess I had found myself in. "I don’t know, Macey. I mean, what if Ryker doesn’t even want this? What if he had just been using me this whole time?"
"Selena, are you kidding me? Ryker is the sweetest, most loyal Alpha I know. There is no way he wouldn't be thrilled about this. You have to tell him tonight, at the banquet!"
I sighed heavily, my gaze dropping back down to the pregnancy test. "What if he rejects the baby? I cannot go through that."
Macey leaned in through the screen, her expression earnest.
"See, listen to me. Ryker is not Kieran. He's not going to reject you or your baby. You have to trust that he cares about you, that this is what he wants too."
I closed my eyes, trying to calm the crazy thoughts jumping about in my mind. Macey was right, Ryker wasn’t anything like Kieran. He had been nothing but kind and supportive since the beginning. But still, the fear of rejection, of being alone with a baby, was suffocating.
"I'm just so scared, Mace. What if he doesn't love me?"
Macey flashed me an encouraging smile. "Selena, that man adores you. You have to believe that. And this baby - it's a miracle. Ryker's going to be over the moon when you tell him."
I nodded slowly, suddenly feeling hopeful. "Okay. Okay, I'll tell him tonight. At the banquet."
Macey beamed, clapping her hands excitedly. "That's my girl! Now, get your butt in gear, woman. Get off this phone and get ready! You need to look like the most stunning Luna on the planet."
I couldn’t help but chuckle. "Alright, alright. I'm on it."
I shot her a grateful smile before ending the call.
I drew a bath and carefully applied my makeup, taking extra care to ensure it was flawless. And when I finally slipped into my black shimmery gown, I felt like I could take on the world. Ryker’s limo appeared at my doorstep with his driver waiting.
Just as I was sliding into the backseat, my phone buzzed with a text from him.
"I'm so sorry but I'm going to be a little late to the banquet. A few last-minute Alpha duties to attend to. But save me a drink, will you? Can't wait to see you."
I couldn’t help but smile, tapping out a quick reply. "No worries. I'll be waiting for you."
With a contented sigh, I settled back into the soft leather seats, the butterflies in my stomach fluttering with anticipation.
The driver opened the door for me as we pulled up to the venue, and as I stepped out, I could feel dozens of eyes turning in my direction looking at me in admiration. I flashed a small smile and unfortunately spotted Nina at that moment, which ruined my mood. She was scowling at me for no reason and I knew there was about to be drama.
"Selena. What the heck are you doing here?" She asked me turning up her button nose in disgust.
I met her gaze calmly, refusing to let her bother me. "I was invited, Nina just like you were. I'm an exceptional employee, after all."
Her lips curled into a sneer. "Invited? Please. Everyone knows you're just here to chase after Kieran. Why don't you do us all a favor and leave him alone? I am the only one who is going to become Mrs Hawthorne and not you."
Didn’t she understand after all these months I had no care for Kieran?
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. "Nina, I don't love Kieran anymore. We broke up more than half a year ago . And if you’re so sure of yourself, why are you still not Mrs.Hawthorne after all these time?."
